Crazy - I have a very high fiber diet. Since I stopped the Deep Sleep I've noticed a big difference. Also, since starting Paleo I've increased the amount of salads I eat.

Peace Out,

Terri

Constipation surely can be part and parcel of being hypothyroid. How is your fiber intake? Since I have hiked up my fiber intake, that "situation" is almost non-existant.

Julie - Thanks for the welcome and abundant information. I will look into the anemia. I tried the 5htp and melatonin. They didn't seem to help. I had been on the melatonin for a while because the doctor felt that would help my mood. I was taking Deep Sleep (a herbal sleep aid) that worked, however it made me constipated.

I found a Homeopath in this town that I'm going to call Monday. I would like to hear their take on all of this.

Peace Out,

Terri

Hi Terri! emoticon

Have you done blood work to make sure you're not anemic (hemoglobin count) or iron deficient (ferritin count)? Iron deficiencies can contribute to swollen tongue and other tongue issues. Unfortunately, those of us with thyroid problems usually have malabsorption problems in our gut and those malabsorption problems cause the anemias which, in turn, worsen malabsorption.

I've been paleo for a number of years now. My antibody count has gone from astronomical in 2006 to nil the last few years. I check every year just to see. And no, my thyroid is not completely gone. (I've been accused of not having a thyroid and therefore, that is the reason for no antibodies - that is not the case)

Because Levothyroxine is a mirror image of natural thyroxine (drug companies cannot patent a naturally occurring substance), the body has to work harder to convert it into thyroxine. This strains the adrenals in particular and if one isn't getting adequate amounts of many vitamins and minerals (esp magnesium & vitamin C [the adrenals use up more vitamin c than any other organ in the body]) through supplementation AND diet (because of the malabsorption, extra is necessary sometimes), many systems in the body are thrown off kilter and insomnia is a symptom.

Rather than dumping your thyroid meds, consider 5htp + vitamin b6 OR melatonin OR valerian to help you sleep.

Several years ago, when I was still on levothyroxine, my only sleep relief came from 50mg of 5htp and 100mg of vitamin b6 about an hour before bed.

I now use a small 3mg dose of melatonin to keep my melatonin and serotonin levels and am fairly regular about it. I don't have trouble getting to sleep at all with or without that.

Some people swear by valerian, but when I tried it, I could smell it on my body after using it only a couple of days and to me, valerian stinks. There is probably something in it my body just doesn't like. I haven't tried it for years, but when I walk into a place that sells the powder, that is the only thing I can smell, so seriously think my body just has hit the reject button on valerian. LOL

Hi everyone. I'm so glad to be here. I just read a testimonial and am so encouraged. She said that the Paleo Diet helped her. I was talking to a hiking buddy and they suggested looking into the Paleo Diet. I mentioned on another thread here and the leader said to check out that team here. Next I decided to see what other threads are here. Some how I got onto an article here some where talking about Homeopathy. I have joined the 30 day challange on the Paleo team and am going to make contact with someone in this area that practices Homeopathy.

At the same time I'm having a terrible problem with blocked glands under my tongue. The doctor wants me to see an ENT specialist. It is making healthy food taste terrible (just want to eat salty/sugary stuff).

Also I'm having problems with insomnia. I read that Levothyroine can cause that. I asked the doctor to check my THS levels. Last Thursday I went to see her and she said that the levels are normal. Also, she doesn't know what is wrong with tongue. I actually did stop taking the Levo a few days ago. (Perhaps I should not. I didn't tell doctor.) I have been able to sleep.

Peace Out,

Terri
