To all of those out there who say they are "slow" runners. Me, too! I was slow when I started and I'm slow now! But, I do run faster than I did a year ago, and a year from now I'll be running faster than I am now. Better to run slow now and fast later, than not to run at all, right???
So keep it up, and be proud! It doesn't matter how fast you run. Just keep going, improve your time slowly, and eventually you'll get to a faster pace! That is what distance running is all about...it isn't a sprint!

Hi, all, my name is Eddy. I mostly try to run trail races, since I enjoy those runs more than road races. I run primarily 10K's and am running my first trail HM in 3 weeks. I'm nowhere near being ready, but what can I do? I'll be running hard for the next few weeks, I guess. I've been nursing a sore knee for the last month and have been pretty sick for the past week. But I'm feeling better now and ready to get back out there!
I look forward to chatting about our runs!

Hi! I just signed up for my first half marathon... The Disney Princess Half Marathon in February 2011. Ever since I first read about it back in the summer of 2009 I knew I wanted to run and promised myself I would in 2011. So I am signed up and looking for any advice from seasoned halfers :D

I'm new to Spark and the Half Marathon team. I'm actually just about to run my first half this Saturday in Baltimore. I'm SUPER nervous! I started running just over a year ago when my best friend asked me to run a 5K in honor of her father who had just passed. I couldn't say no, so I tried Couch to 5K and just kept going... I'm not fast, but I do keep going :)

Races:
Baltimore Half 10/16 (first HM)
MS Run (either 5K or 10K or both) 11/25

Iím new to the team but not so new to Spark! This is my 3rd time joiningÖand you know what they say about 3rd timeís a charm!!? Iíve been doing really well this time around, but Iíve decided it was time for a big fitness-related goal. Iíve always wanted to be a runnerÖeven in high schoolÖbut I was always SO slow that I never pursued it. Now, Iím still slow, and I canít run very far at a time yet, but I donít care how slow I amÖI WILL complete a Ĺ marathon! A fellow Spark friend and I are planning on doing the Cleveland Ĺ Marathon in May. According to their website, thatís 221 days away! I need some work, so Iím starting my training now! I know with time and LOTS of training, Iíll be able to run it!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this half-maraton team. I started running a few years ago, just jog/walk/jog/walk running. I could never push myself further because of this 'fear' I had. Well in March of 2010 I signed up for a rookie runners class and have ran r 5K's since. I run anywhere between 1-5 times a week. I've slowed down lately because I need a new goal. I want to run a half marathon more than anything now. :)

Hi everyone,

My name is Bev and I am 61 years young. I decided recently I wanted a "big" challenge to complete before my next birthday. I am a realative newcomer to SP and while reading some blogs I learned about the HM. Although I was THINKING about doing it, I was petrified of ACTUALLY doing it. Then I met Pedal Pusher and the rest is history. I am only a walker, and not that fast, but we determined we would do this HM together. So this Sat, Linda and I will do our first HM in Lancaster PA. I feel sure this will not be her last, but we'll have to wait to see how it goes before I decide. LOL. Good luck to all of you who have races scheduled. Run/walk safely. God Bless.

Hello there team...I haven't ran or signed up for the 1/2 YET. I am thinking of one that is Nov. 28. I ran my first official 10k last sunday and am ready for bigger better things(: The 10k was also a 1/2 you just obviously ran further. I wanted to keep treking with the others. Although the course was NOT easy there were some big hill involved it was great for sure! (: SO That is the reason I am here. (: I want that 1/2 in my 2010 memories and want more 1/2's in my years to come. I have found a new love for running and It has really helped with my weight loss for sure. (;

I usually wear running or biking tights when it is too cold for shorts. But really anything works, just be sure it is comfortable/non-chafing. Cotton is generally not good, yucky and cold when it gets wet. emoticon

Hi! I'm new. I haven't run a half marathon in over 4 years and that was the only one. In fact, I hadn't run much of anything since then until this summer. I'm currently running about 20 miles a week and I do have one problem. It's getting colder and I'm not sure what to wear on my legs when I go out for my long runs. What's smartest when it's just too cold for shorts? I'm gearing up to begin more formal training in February so I can run the Green Bay Half Marathon in May!! Woo-hoo!

Hello~
I just signed up for a half marathon on Nov 6th. I am nervous!!! The course is hilly, but should be beautiful.
I started running regularly in June for the first time since high school cross country...just had my 20 year reunion. I ran a 10K trail race on 9/18/10 and was looking for another 10 or 12K race this season. After juggling my husband, family and work schedule I came up with the Zeitgeist Marathon on 11/6. The course was not boring...but am I really ready for 13.2 miles??? According to my running log and a few beginner half marathon training guides, I am.
Now, I just have to psyche myself up emoticon

Hi team!
My name is Sophia. I am working my way up to running a half marathon in 2011. Not sure when yet, there are a few that I have my eye on.

I am taking my training slow & steady, just trying to enjoy it rather than letting it take over.

I look forward to getting to know you all & reading about your journeys.

Hello everyone my name is Sonia. I joined sparkpeople on March 29th and started to run in April. I have done 3 5 k's now with my PB being 10:08/30:32 min. I started half marathon training on August 23rd. When I originally started training I had no intentions on running a half this year although my goal is to run a half by next summer. I now have officialy signed up for my first HM in December. My problem is I am terrified. I will be on week 6 of 15 weeks of training and I still am unable to do my long runs. The longest I have ran without stopping is 4.6 miles. Tomorrow we will be doing a 6 mile run and I am so terrified. We did the 6 mile run two weeks ago and I had to stop after 3 miles for a quick break then again around 5 miles. I don't seem to have the endurance or mental capability to continue. I keep letting fear overcome me. I am hoping that by joining this team I can gather the knowledge and support needed to conquer my fears. So hear I am emoticon ready to start this challenge. Thunder road here I come.

Hello, my brother signed me up for a half marathon in November of this year.

I haven't done anything like this before & am a bit afraid that I won't train properly or won't be ready come November.

I've participated in some other events but nothing official like the Philadelphia Marathon.

By combining both walking, jogging & running, I can get up to distances of 5 miles but I can't "run" a straight mile, let alone go 13.1!

I've also gained back about 10lbs since I started SP in May so my training runs are now slower by 15-30 min.

Hi! I'm currently contemplating doing a half with my sister-in-law on Nov 21st. I only started running in June and ran my first 5K Sept 11th. I'm 40 and have never been a runner, or any kind of athelete, before.

I having been running 'long runs' of 3 to 3.5 miles once or twice a week for the past 6 weeks. Today I ran 4.5 miles. I know I could have gone a lot farther.

So, my sil is running the half I mentioned. I'd have 8 weeks to get from 4.5 miles to 13.1. I am planning on seeing how I do the next two weekends and then deciding if I'm doing the half with her or a 5K and just cheering her on. I know I could go and walk it, but it'd be great to run it! I'm also a very SLOW runner and would come in way near the back... unless I pick up some speed in the next 8 weeks.

So, I'm nervous! But, I also know that if I don't run this time, there will be other chances!

Dana, Half Fanatic #1693

Feb 9 - Pedaling the Prairie, 45 miles
Feb 16 - Lions Club Bike Ride, 46.5 miles

Sept 2 - Dam Ride, 32 miles

Hi my name is Pam and I am going to complete my first half in 3 1/2 weeks. I'm definitely a beginner with my only goal to finish. :) 6 months ago I would have never thought I would sign up for this but I'm training hard - have lost over 60 pounds - and can't wait to say that I've completed a half-marathon.

Hi, I'm Nanette & I just ran my 2nd half and I ran a full in May. I love the half distance...it's challenging yet manageable. I ran my 1st in 1:59:?? and just finished my second in 2:14:43 as I was a suffering from some muscle fatigue in my legs I think due to overtraining.

I ran my full in May in 4:16:?? and would love to get that down to the 4:00 mark..and plan on working my way there by increasing my speed in the half to where the predictor models have me hitting a 4 hr full...I'm hoping that by training to run a faster half...I'll eventually get there...gives me something to shoot for right??

Anyway...seriously love the half distance!!

Hi, I'm Natalie. I can't believe I just did it, but I just signed up for my first half marathon and I'm freaking out a little already!

I've run a few races, including 3 10K's already, and I distinctly remember thinking during the last one that I was never going to do it again, so I'm not quite sure what I was thinking! emoticon

It looks like this is a great, active team with lots of experience and great advice!

Hello all! Joined this group as I plan on running my first half marathon in November. Hoping I can get great advice and tips from fellow runners!

At some point you have to own up to how great you are, how beautiful you are, to how much inner dignity and potential you have. Hi. My name is Rhonda. I currently live in Virginia. I have done several 5K's, 3 Sprint Triathalons (in Baghdad) and a 10K this year. So, I am thinking I want to try a half marathon next....just seems like the right thing to do. Just not sure when or which one I will commit to as of yet. I love the way running makes me feel when I am done and I love how it helped me reach my weight loss goals.

Hello all! My name is Jennie, and I'm fairly new to this whole running thing. I've been going at it for several months now, and am up to running about 4-5 miles at a time at a 10 min/mile pace.

I recently joined a group of runners who meet up on Saturday mornings, and I'll be doing a marathon relay with them this Sunday....my first race ever. (I'll be doing the short leg....3.6 miles!) My first solo race will be a 5k on the 19th.

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone, learning tips on increasing mileage, avoiding injuries and sharing in all those wonderful accomplishments!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the team. I have set a goal for myself to run my first ever half marathon September of 2011. Sometimes I think I am crazy to have made this goal as I have only run 5kms before, but I really love the feeling I get from running, and even though its been challenging to increase the Km, slow as its going, I know I Will get there, step by step, run by run, km by km emoticon

Hi all - I am new to the team and looking forward to my first HalfMarathon in November. I have done a handful of sprint distance triathlons and would like to do the next longer distance of olympic triathlon, so this running training will hopefully prepare me for that.

Running is my biggest challenge, so I am happy to see all the runner/walkers on this group.

Hi all! I'm ashpags (Ashley) and I'm new to SP and half marathons. I am a walker who's done a few 5Ks, and now I'm challenging myself to a half in December. I look forward to reading the threads here for tips. =)

A little about me...I've been running for over a year and recently joined the Best Bank Track Team. I'm currently training for my first half marathon which is in Oct.

Hello everyone~

I am new and wanted to say Hi! I am currently training for my 2nd 1/2 marathon. I completed my first one in April and fell in love with the way running makes me feel! I'm starting to get a little burned out on the training right now (still have 4 1/2 weeks until race day) so I am hoping to find some motivation by joining the team. Seeing others accomplish their goals really inspires me!

Hello...I just signed up for the 500 Mini Marathon in Indianapolis on May 7 with my Dad and sister. I have been walk/jogging for a little while now but want to take it to the next level. My sister had knee surgery 10 weeks ago so she wanted to motivate herself to get back into shape. I am really excited about it and look forward to all the things I will be doing along the way to get ready.

Good for you... it's not always about how fast you can cross the line but that you can cross the line! I am going to do my first 1/2 marathon in October and I can't wait!!! My best friend, little brother and I are going to enter together... it will be fun and exciting! While training to do this race I have found a part of me I lost a long time ago. I want to do more and in Sept. I hope to be in Portland doing the Race for the Cure with my Aunts and cousins. That 5k means a lot to me since my mother in law has breast cancer. I think it is a noble cause indeed to walk in honor of your sister!!! The best of luck to you!

I'm new on this team too. I am following John Bingham's Running For Mortals 10K training. I had to take a few weeks off due to injury but started up again and so far so good. First goal is a 10K which I have not chosen yet. At age 54 sometimes things get a little slower progress-wise and I do not want to push too hard too fast. I check on all the local races and when I am ready I will enter. After that the half marathon is my goal. I have 3 siblings that do ultra running but that is not one of my goals.

I'm new to this team -

In May of 2009 and 2010, I walked the Flying Pig 1/2 in Cincinnati.

Tonight, I committed to walk the 1/2 in the Las Vegas Rock n Roll!! Their charity of choice this year is CCFA (Crohn's and Colitis Foundation), and I'm walking in honor of my dear sister who suffers from Crohn's.

I'm a s--l--o--w walker!

Joined a gym a few weeks ago to help train, and the CCFA has regular training meetings.

I'm SO excited!

Hi! I am going to run my second 1/2 marathon in October. I'm an Air Force wife and we are stationed in the United Kingdom. We also have 3 year old twns. The first 1/2 marathon that I ran was the Virginia Beach Shamrock,I finished in just over 2:38:36. Not as fast as I hoped, but finishing felt amazing. I had a pretty major surgery (not running injury related) rigt after completing the race so my running has been put on the back burner. My goal is to lose a little bit of weight, and finish in under 2:30:00.

Hi, I'm Stephanie. I started running with C25K in April, then I started to love running and I just finished OHR. I needed a new program to follow and my friend runs HMs, so here I am starting HM training.
