Hi,

I am new to the group. I am a non-fiction writer. I am working on my 2nd book. I would like to have my first draft and 20 lbs off by the end of June. Encouragement is needed for both!!

I've been using the Spark for almost a year now. Just discovered this site. I'm wondering if there is any sizable amount of people who are into nonfiction writing. I didn't see any threads for that. Thanks, Glenn

I received a very kind and motivating welcome on my personal page so I thought I would drop in and say hello.

Over the last few years I have lost a LOT of motivation in basically every aspect of my life, but I feel like I am finally ready for a change. I want to get healthy and I want to get writing! I look forward to being a part of this team because I have tried to do this alone and it just didn't work for me. Hooray for the internet!

I am very new to this forum, but I wanted to pop in and say Hello. I look forward to looking around and getting to know more about you all. I am excited to interact with other writers! I don't have anything worth publishing yet, but I have been writing stories since I was old enough to hold a pen. I do a lot of writing in role play situations right now, but I'm also working on some stories on the side that I hope to eventually "publish" on Wattpad. (check it out if you haven't seen it before!! Very awesome site. :D ) I'm excited to get more involved here on Spark, and I hope to make new friends and get some good tips on both dieting and writing as well. :D

I have been a Spark member since 2008 and have been inactive for quite awhile. I need to get back to a healthy lifestyle for 2013. So when I was searching teams to join I saw this one. I just published my first novel for Amazon.com for Kindle. It is on my profile. Please check it out. If there is anyone who wants to try to publish on Amazon for Kindle, I might be able to help with some of your questions. The procedures and process can be a bit overwhelming. In any event, here is a synopsis of my novel.

Alexa Kincaid is living the American dream. She is married to David
Cooper, a handsome pediatrician, has a successful criminal law practice,
and a beautiful home on the Chesapeake Bay. But her dreams are soon
shattered when she finds out that the woman she's representing in the
biggest trial of her career, Rachel Mills, reveals a secret that
threatens her marriage to David. It will take all of Alexa's strength to
set aside her personal feelings for a woman she so desperately wants to
hate, in order to successfully defend her in court. Along the way, Alexa
learns some powerful lessons about love, guilt, and jealousy. Upon
searching the depths of her own soul to find the true meaning of
forgiveness, she receives a gift from Rachel that changes her life
forever.

Hello everyone! My name is Jessica and my husband and I just moved back home to Alabama. We live on the outskirts of Athens, home of the Annual Grease Festival..I really wish that was a joke. I grew up in Alabama and finally convinced him to bring me home lol. I'm not really new here, I've been lurking the message boards and website for quite some time but life was just too busy to take much of an active part before.

A bit about me - I'm 36 (almost!) and at my heaviest I weighed 300+ and have since lost an entire person, although I'd love to get down to about 125lbs. I'm premenopausal (which is SOOO helpful for weight loss right?), a self-proclaimed couch potato (I miss that lol) and I HATE cardio exercise. Seriously. With the passion of a thousand burning suns. Hate it. I have since lost my boobs so every one kindly send them my way, because after so much weight loss, childbirth (4 in 5 yrs) and what I am contributing to a sudden dramatic unexplained increase of the earth's gravitational pull (scientists should concentrate on that) all I have are pancakes hell bent on making friends with my feet.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat are really good friends. ~Author Unknown~

Thanks for the visuals! That's a clever way to look at four (or however many) pounds lost without thinking, "Oh, it's just four pounds." It's also a quarter of a bowling ball, slightly less than a 5-pound bag of sugar or 16 sticks of butter.

I like what you said about writing, too, and I look forward to the new topic listing!

Catie, I have learned that it is a waste of time to compare ourselves and our accomplishments to those of others. Just as we all start on the weight loss trip at different times on different roads, we can't compare our progress to that of others who started earlier or are on a different road. Using the one pound at a time has helped me lose 42.4 pounds so far. It has been a couple of weeks but the next pound is almost ready to go away. We can more easily visualize one pound than 20 or 50 or 100. But here's another trick I'm using -- picturing something you can relate to for your weight loss -- I use 16-pound bowling balls because when I lose four pounds I can see in my mind 1/4 of a ball cut away; eight pounds and I can see 1/2 of a bowling ball gone, and so one.

One SP member uses 20 pound boxes of kitty litter, another five pound bags of sugar, still another a 50-pound sack of potatoes. They each can relate to those individual things, as I do with the four emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I will lose.

As for your writing, many people think writing a novel is the only thing to write. Soon, I'll start a new topic listings about two dozen writing areas and ask members to add to it. When I present these to classes, students are surprised to learn that writing books is not the only thing writers may write. So, short stories, books, newsletters, whatever, remember: A writer writes. Period!

I look forward to updates on your successful weight loss and the progress of your writing. Never give up! emoticon -- Lou

I've been a member of this team for quite some time but haven't done any participating, so I guess technically, I'm new.

I've been struggling and frustrated for quite some time now. I once lost 94 pounds on WW, but then I got pregnant and the weight came back super fast because I just haven't been able to curb my appetite. I feel overwhelmed by how much weight I have to lose, so I appreciate what Lou said about thinking one pound at a time. Maybe I can get myself in that frame of mind, too.

I've been a wannabe writer for as long as I can remember. I'd work on short stories spurts but I've never submitted anything for publication. And for the past two or three years, I've been more focused on freelance work. Over the last year, I've had a lot of changes: I'm a first-time mom and one of my major freelance projects went away. I don't really have more time on my hands, but I've found myself blogging over the past few months about being a mom and my beading hobby. I feel inadequate as a writer looking at so many people who've written or are working on novels! Maybe seeing what others have accomplished will inspire me to work harder on my writing, too.

emoticon , Katie.

Right now do you believe you can lose just one pound? I've found that for me thinking in terms of losing 68 pounds was too overwhelming so I focus on losing one pound, no matter how long it takes. When that happens, I pat myself on the back and get to work on the next one pound because these small, repeated successes reinforce my motivation and keep me going.

One other trick I use is to remember that we did not need to be perfect in school to get an "A" so why would we expect to be perfect losing weight? There will be detours, frustrations and roadblocks mixed with our joy when we succeed. So aim for making it a habit to have five to six positive "A" days a week where you stay within calorie range and exercise for at least 10 minutes. Don't go crazy the other day(s) but realize that going over your calorie limit a little because you had dessert or that you didn't exercise because you were ill or something does not make your week a failure.

These have worked for me to lose 42.4 pounds so far and they can work for you, too. Never stop trying and always believe in yourself you CAN do this, one pound at a time. emoticon -- Lou

Hello!

My name is Katie. I'm overweight, have horrible habits, and would like to work on my self discipline. I used to write quite a bit when I was a kid, especially in high school. I've always struggled with my weight, but when I became a freshman in high school, I lost about 75 lbs and nearly completed a book. Then I graduated, went to college, gained that all back and then some, and stopped writing. I think maybe the two are connected for me? So, I'm starting down a new road, with a new story (hopefully a YA fantasy that won't be complete dreck), and I'm hoping to start some new healthy habits to go with me new story. Very pleased to meet everyone!

Hello everyone,

My name is Cheryl, and I am in the process of wrapping up the first draft of my fantasy novel. This is about my 8th attempt at writing a book, but the first one that "stuck." I keep thinking, what if I get an agent...or a deal...then they ask for a picture for the book jacket. I would much rather give them one where I'm 30 lbs. lighter!

Who would imagine it would take more discipline for me to lose weight than to finish a manuscript?

Looking forward meeting some people with goals similar to mine!

Hi! I just joined this group today. I had just started back trying to track my calories. Then, I was searching for a writing group to help me keep accountable for doing my daily writing. I was surprised and excited to see that there was a writer's group on spark people. Can't wait to get to know everyone. :)

Hi all. I joined the team yesterday. I have been writing for years. I thought maybe joining a writing team or two would help me stay more on track- ie, actually make writing a priority instead of putting it off. I have added some of the team goals to my tracker and I think this will help me.

I've been on Spark for nearly 2 years now, and you can see from my Spark page that I work in a library, am married, and have a daughter.

emoticon ! Welcome to the "Writers’ Support Group" team. We appreciate you spending time with us.

I'm Lou, a team co-leader. Please let us know if we may help you in any way. I hope you will feel comfortable huddling when you log in and posting on topics of interest to you.

For your Christian romance, I suggest checking your area for a chapter of Word Weavers. You can find them on Facebook, if you use that site, or let me know and I'll put you in touch with one of the leaders who can tell you the closest chapter. They are Christian groups with terrific critiques and camaraderie. -- Lou

I do some freelancing at home - very part time - 5-10 hrs a week (on top of being a part-time office worker & mostly full-time SAHM) and am in the middle of trying to finish a contemporary Christian romance novel/book/story.

I also have ideas for a historical romance and a time travel/ parallel universe romance - hopefully they will see the light of day at some point! I'm hoping joining this support group will help spur me to a) make writing (as well as making healthy lifestyle choices) a habit and b) finish my first story so I can start on the rest.

happy to be here!

Thanks so much for the quick response. I'll look into it tomorrow. I was just at the library but they're closed on Sundays through September. I'll have to go tomorrow. But, I can reserve it and have it ready for me come tomorrow. Thank you.

emoticon , Missy, Regina, and Superachiever. Always happy to meet new people and help with weight loss and writing along the way.

The best resource in my experience is Writer's Market, available at bookstores and most libraries. It lists thousands of outlets for our writing from poetry, fiction, non-fiction, romance, mystery, short stories, and more. It provides the writer's guidelines for publications listed and has articles about writing, agents, first-time novelist profiles and other writing related topics.

Wishing all of you great success. Please let us know of questions you may have and keep us updated on your progress. emoticon -- Lou

Hello everyone. I just came across this team as I was commenting on one of my bud's pages. I thought I'd take a peek in to see if this might help me in my desire to become a published writer.

I have had a calling from God for many years and have been an on again, off again writer of what it was He was asking me to write about. I have many manuscripts per se and have condensed a good portion of it into a book format. But my project here is an on-going book where I hope to see it as an inspirational and motivational book others can pick up, read and learn something from my own, personal experiences over the years.

I had enough to submit for publication and have done so a number of times but this is where I need the help at the moment. I don't have any problem writing things down nor do I have a problem meeting content minimums. I do have a problem in finding the sources I need to submit a sampling to for their review and have it accepted.

I have story lines up the ying yang and has started to write about all of them. Everything from real estate to computers are areas I can and have written about.

I'm glad I found this site and am optimistic in seeing answers and results coming from my affiliation here.

Looking forward to meeting more of you as I continue on my path to being a successful writer.

Hi everyone. I am Regina. I am happy to have found this group. I love to write, however, I have not wrote anything creative in a while. I work in a law office and I am writing all day, boring, dry legalese type stuff.... *yawn* .

I have sat at my desk these past years, giving everything, all I have inside of me to my boss, my waist has expanded, my brain has went numb, my imagination is asleep, and I have gained a lot of weight. I feel like a walking zombie, half dead most of the time.

I found Spark a few weeks ago and have decided to change me, I don't like who I have become. I am working out now, joining challenges and I have found this group. I am excited about being here.

Hi, everyone! I'm Missy. I like to write poetry and devotionals. Currently, I'm challenging myself to write a poem or a devotional each day. I've been published in church & non-profit organization's newsletters. I don't get paid for my writing, but I enjoy doing it anyway.

I came here for support and encouragement on working toward my weight loss & writing goals. I will offer the same in return.

I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)

Saw this great reminder today: "Don't put your trust in the elephant or the donkey but in the Lamb!"

Who-hoo! I write trashy novels! I'm ahead of the game!

I love the story about your friend and her book. Not the outcome, of course, but the life lessons.

Hi all. I'm Barb and I write most magazine articles and web content. Most of it has to do with parenting. I'm working on preparing a new manuscript to submit to a publisher and have one book that I published in 2001. I was so happy to find this group.

Keeping it real!
Barb

You are to be commended for your caring and thoughtful project for your friend, something her family and friends can enjoy and remember her by. I look forward to your trashy cable series and then hearing from you from your new home on an island in the South Pacific or your cozy mountain cabin. emoticon

Many writers get easily distracted when trying to write at home for the reasons you face. That's why it's good to get out to a library, diner (during slow times), coffee shop or bookstore. Two chapters of the book I'm writing were conceived and finished at different fire stations where my brother and nephew work when they had to go out on calls. Being away from home lets us focus on our projects rather than cleaning house or mowing the yard. Wishing you much success. -- Lou

wow..so many teams to choose from: I think it's time I join a writer's team just to help me stay motivated to write. I love to write but have a hard time getting at it... tend to clean the desk drawers, straighten the book shelves, vacuum the floor, get off track way too easily!
But I really do love to write and rewrite and to say I have written. I have written stories and poems, horrible poems, moralistic little stories since I was a child.. a wanna be Aesop?, and mother saved all of them. embarrassing.
then I went on to write 'fun' things..curriculums, lesson plans, and dept newsletters, then moved into a new career and wrote sermons.
In retirement several years ago, the first thing I found myself writing was a little book for a woman friend/former hospice client who was dying and wanted some of her stories shared; got the little book done and published before she died;much to everyone's surprise that event rallied her at first and she was able to attend many book signings, local radio and tv interviews, and even spoke at a class I was teaching as adjunct on death and dying and greatly impressed the students; ..it was all wonderful to see; her little book sold over 500 copies. We were all stunned and excited for her. She died a year after publication, and the family put the book in her hands in the casket.
So.. I've learned that not only listening to stories, but hearing others' stories and then having them written down either by themselves or someone else can be very life affirming.
My goal is to finish writing a compilation of stories, poems, families/individual shared with me as I sat with them during times of crisis, times of dying, of letting go of loved ones.
as they were so inspiring and maybe will inspire others.
****And then maybe will get around to writing a trashy novel that will get turned into a Cable TV movie and make me rich! LOL***..
