Hi everyone! I'm Camy and I write Christian romantic suspense and this year, I'll be releasing my first Regency romance under a pseudonym, Camille Elliot. I also joined another writing group so I'm sure I'll see a lot of the same people here!

I am REALLY new to all of this. Therefore, bear with me please. Why have I joined this forum? I love to write. Writing keeps me centered when I'm being pulled in multiple directions. It stops me from eating when I'm stressed. It's my moment of privacy against the world and all of the troubles within it. I write fiction novels. Currently, I am completing the second novel of a trilogy. I also write personal poems and short stories.

I am a native of Rochester, New York and currently residing in Punta Gorda, Florida. I love animals and people. Retired from the medical field since 2007, I now have more time to write and mingle and unfortunately EAT.

I hope this brief excerpt gives you some feedback about me. If you wish to know more, don't hesitate to ask. Happy Holiday, be safe and eat healthy.

I'm on my way.

I can tell already that this group is going to be awesome!

Yes, I'm a writer, unpublished, and about 30K into a what I'm calling a gumbo of a novel. It's part romance part historical part paranormal, which I know sounds crazy, but it's working. I won Nano this year, which I'm quite proud of!

I'm motivated to lose weight and increase my word count! Next year, I'll be attending the Romantic Times Convention in NOLA, and I need to wear costumes for their parties. I've also signed up for their novel writing boot camp, so I want to be able to have a finished novel to work on while I'm there. If I'm really brave, I'll pitch it to someone!

Sounds like this is the perfect team for me!

Hi emoticon Kate! Contrary to some people, I enjoy researching, fact checking, reading biographies if I'm referring to someone in a writing project. One thing I believe is vital for our writing success, no matter the genre, is to read AND STUDY books, articles, newsletters, brochures, etc., to learn how published materials similar to what we're working on are structured, where weak spots are, and so on. I often find myself doing a better (in my opinion) editing job of what I'm reading since that's what I do -- editing -- in addition to writing. So, read, study, research, learn, and above all -- WRITE! May you have great success. emoticon -- Lou

Hi, when I was searching for teams to join, I discovered the Writing team and was delighted as I have had several ideas in mind and needed some motivation and accountability to get started.

I have written poetry off and on for a number of years. I have also played a lot of Dungeon and Dragons and I was keen to try my hand at writing a fantasy novel. Since I have joined the team, I have made a start and identified the topics I need to research, and have started researching.

Being a member of the team is keeping me focused and productive.

Cheers!

Kate

Hi All,

Like probably all of you, I primarily joined Spark People to lose weight and get healthy but after checking out the various teams it occurred to me that perhaps there is a writing-focused team so I ran a search and here you all are!

I have been working on my first novel for about 2 years now and like my struggle with being overweight, my commitment to write has fluctuated. I only have about 15,000 words of what you might call a manuscript so far and many more thousands of words in outlines and notes as well as quite a bit of time logged researching.

My chosen genre is high fantasy with some science fiction mixed in. I am particular fascinated with exoplanets, neutron stars, hyperspace travel and astrobiology and am attempting to marry these topics with judeo-christian beliefs in a fantasy setting.

I've had no formal writing training and am kind of a "figure it out as I go" type of person though I have listened to nearly every podcast on Brandon Sanderson's Writing Excuses and have read a few "how to" books on the topic. The one thing I have learned is that anyone can write but not everyone can write well. It's not easy!

Looking forward to getting to know the team and finding some motivation and encouragement to rededicate to write while also improving my fitness!

I work on just the graphics and the development (functionality) of the website. However, I work for a major publisher, and partake in a few of their books here and there. I love a good story and have a few ideas of my own. I just need to get started ;)

Hello All!

I'm not a writer per-se, yet. I would really like to be one. At least as a hobby.

For now I'm a graphic designer/web developer looking for a change in pace. I'm really glad this team exists on this site, as I can now keep all of my goals packaged in one neat and cozy place.

Cheers!

Hi,

This is my first time using Spark People. I committed to 2 hours a day of working on my graphic novel/book (we'll see what it becomes)...and was just looking for some accountability since that is often where after the 3 or 4 month point people tend to falter....Do all the members see your progress on your tracking sheet? Just wondering if there was some way to get a weekly reminder or check-in that you did your hours for the week.

Hi, Kat,
What is it that makes you feel out of your league? If you'd like to discuss this, open the thread on the General Discussion board. I've done a lot of freelancing over the years, and I've hired freelancers as an editor for many years. Perhaps I can help.

Hello everyone!

I've been on sparkpeople for several years now, and I'm hoping this time I can make my efforts stick. I love to write, but haven't been making time for it lately. Due to recent unemployment I've been toying with the idea of freelance work, but I feel so very out of my league in doing so. We shall see what the future holds, and I look forward to getting to know you all!

Cheers,
Kat

Hi, all. I'm thrilled to find a writers' support group on a weight loss site! For me, the two are interconnected, along with depression. When the depression is bad, I eat junk food (lots of it!), and my energy level drops. When my energy level drops, I don't write, and I allow the depression to tell me that I'm a loser, that I'll never be successful, and that I should just give up. This leads to more overeating, which leads to... well, you get the picture.

I'm trying something new this time: rather than focusing on huge goals (like losing 100 pounds, or finishing the epic fantasy novel I'm working on), I'm going to hold myself accountable for taking a couple of small (sometimes minuscule!) steps each day. Specifically, I'm going to focus on writing at least 30 minutes each day; on riding my bike and/or walking a little bit each day; and on making the healthiest eating choices I am capable of on any given day.

Doesn't sound like much, I know. But it allows me to fight small battles, one at a time, and to enjoy small victories. It also means that, if I screw up on a particular day, I simply pick up the battle again the next day. So I'm going to check in here every day or two, note my successes and failures, and try to both give and get support from the group.

Glad to be here!

Hello! I too have been wanting to do a book. I also have not yet taken a step towards that dream, however I am sure that I will sooner or later. All of my writing has seemed to be centered around my early love life; more or less in my teenage years. Now that I am married and a mother, I feel that I really have nothing to write about. Nothing that I can just dive into and lose myself in. I once had a writing assignment in high school that was somewhat of a short story; after I turned it in, I re-read it and found that it was so unorganized! There were random events scattered throughout the pages. I couldn't believe how sloppy it was. My teacher had dually noted. I want to have enough time and the right place to just block everything out, and just spill emotion and thought onto a piece of lined paper in front of me. *Sigh* Well, maybe someday.

I have been writing poetry for as long as I can remember. I have over a hundred poems I have managed to save over the years, despite the many times of writer's block. But I also have many unfinished poems, too, that really bother me....I finally started sharing my poetry, & am getting a lot of positive feedback, which helps immensely.

Hi everyone, I have been writing fairly consistently for about 10 years. I tend to memoir and essays and have had several pieces published in newspapers and essay collections. I want to organize my pieces and future projects around a book project of some kind. So far I've just been thinking about it and not really tackling it. Looking forward to checking in here and learning from everyone.

Hi I love writing creatively. I have had three books published and two won awards best of the year in their category. For a short time I belonged to a writers group of christian woman but life got complicated and haven't actually done any writing in a couple years. Wanting to get back to it.

I am a work in progress.

I graduated with an English degree in 2010 but haven't really made any progress career wise due to illness. I'm finally at a place where I am well enough to jump back into the job search and also want to enter more writing contests. My strength is in poetry.

Will have a look around this support group and maybe do some of the challenges. Didn't think sparkpeople would have a writer's support group, pretty awesome if you ask me. emoticon

Hi - I'm Sharon from NJ, which you might guess from the headline.

I was a Proposal Manager/Writer for over 10 years, but I am staying home to care for my two girls - ages 5 and 2. I have done a variety of freelance work, including: grant writing, journalism for a newspaper, contract work for a proposal, and blogging. In addition, I write professional resumes, and get work through referrals from friends.

My blog is a local site for families in my area about family-friendly activities, as well as deals (groupon, etc.) in our area. In addition, I sporadically work for an online publishing company and write for other companies' blogs.

I would love to find some consistent, paid writing work.

For fun, I would like to cull my personal vignettes into either a cohesive story, or a collection of short stories.

Hi, I'm Brianne. I joined Spark about a year ago and I am trying hard to stick to getting healthy.
I saw this group and hoped that it may help me get back into writing. I used to write all the time. Page after page. Mostly, for my own enjoyment. It has been a long time since I have written something I have liked. I really want to get back to my stories.

Hi, I am new to this team. I am also new to writing. I've wanted to write for years, and am at a point in my life that I am ready to devote myself to writing. I would like to write a memoir and am reading Writing Life Stories, by Bill Roorbach. I'm not really interested in getting published, just getting the stories out of my head. I love the idea that this community is part of SparkPeople. I'm glad to be a part of it.

Hi, everyone. I'm getting back to writing after taking a year long break. So far I've completed 3 novels, and a handful of short stories and plays. I tend to write young adult or urban fantasy. Not sure what I'm going to work on next. I plan on journalling until I get something I can use as a jumping off point.

Happy writing!

Don't do telephone queries unless you know the editor really well and have received permission to do so. Read about effective query letters and practice writing some with made-up articles. Always write or email a publication for its writer's guidelines; many major and regional ones are available in Writer's Market.

First paragraph: Usually your article's lead, to get editor's attention.

Second paragraph" Why this article will be a good fit for the publication (educate readers, make them laugh, etc.).

Third paragraph: Why you are qualified to write the article (personal experience, passion, etc.). Include here names of any other pubs you've written for, including newsletters, fliers, brochures.

Fourth paragraph: Length of proposed piece (use pub's guidelines for reference), when you can have article to editor. Thank you for their consideration.

Thanks, Lou. You have a great point. I have had a narrow view about publication. I looked into freelancing (through an online class and a couple of books) but I have always been terrified at the idea of cold calling someone and saying, "Hey, I'm doing a story on X and was wondering if I could get a quote from you?" And then the savvy response will be, "Really? What publication do you work for?" My response: *Gulp.* But as you suggest I'll check out Writer's Market. Thanks!

emoticon back! There are many ways to get published -- neighborhood newsletters, "Letters to the Editor" and "My Word" opinion pieces in local and out of area newspapers (hometown, college town, etc.), magazine articles, etc. Look at every piece of printed material you come across as a potential outlet. Many businesses and companies have their own newspapers/newsletters. Be open to possibilities and realize that being published is not limited to short stories or books. Those may come in time but until then there is a lot of money available for freelanced submissions. Check "Writer's Market" as a starting point. May you have much success. emoticon -- Lou

Hello there, everyone! I am a returning member. I did lose about 20 pounds on here two years ago, then got in a relationship, and both he and I gained back about 40 pounds apiece. Sigh. So starting fresh.

I have a bachelor's degree in English but I never used it. I love to write, but like Jess said, it's scary. I write and my characters are stick figures, and I don't immediately have a great story idea, so I just give up and leave the stories unfinished. I bought a book I've read before though, and highly recommend it, if you need help getting started or on just about any aspect of writing: "Immediate Fiction" by Jerry Cleaver.

I am in love with short stories and that's really what I'm drawn to. You'd think they'd be easier, but according to the author, and to a former online writing teacher I had, that's just not the case.

I am happiest when I am being creative. I would love to get better at writing, and get published, if I can learn patience and discipline.

Glad to be part of the group.

Hi all! My name is Jess and I am so happy I found this group! I actually joined SP in 2007 and lost close to 70 pounds. Over the last five years I have gained it all back. But I am motivated to lose again and maintain it this time!

I currently am working on two different types of writing projects. The first one is for academic purposes. I would like to apply to a doctorate program for admission next Fall. The area of study I am pursuing is in rhetoric, so I am working on research and writing for a strong writing sample.

The other writing project is more of a creative endeavor. It is my dream to publish a book of short stories in the magical realism genre. My favorite authors are all magical realists and I aspire to write my own collection.

Like others here, I have trouble sitting down to write, but I also have trouble taking the first steps in writing because the first couple of sentences I write always sound horrific in my mind, so I just give up.

In any case, I am hoping this group will help me find some great inspiration and motivation to work on these projects.

Nice to meet everyone and thank you for having me come aboard.

emoticon , Karl. I also sometimes tell myself there are too many other things taking up my time leaving none for writing. But I realized one day that people with other passions find time for run, bowling, golfing, painting, woodworking, gardening, working on a car, etc., so why do we as writers consistently claim we have no time for our passion when it can be done at home, at work on a break, in a diner for lunch, at a park, and so many other places at any time? That realization is what keeps me on track because I love to write. emoticon -- Lou

Hi. I'm Karl and have been on SP since Sept 2011. I've lost around 50 pounds since then and want to lose a whole lot more.

I am currently attempting to write a book kinda in line with Dan Brown's stuff minus the religion. My story centers around a couple of guys who sign up for an adventure and have to find clues to locations around the world at each stop.

My biggest problem is actually sitting down and writing. I've started and stopped several different times on various "great american novels", but I really want to give this one a shot.

Glad to have found this group!
