Hi Folks,

I am Connie and this is the group I have been looking for!! I am a runner and have been doing it for about 6 years when I lost 80 pounds. I have never become a fast runner and am usually at the back of the pack. And I have never been able to lose the rest of the weight I'd like to (50 more pounds).

However, I keep going and know I am much healthier than I used to be. I also have a better outlook and more energy than I ever used to have.

I look forward to sharing my stuggles and hearing about your adventures!!

welcome carrie. Couch to 5K is a great place to start running. You can do it.

Hi ~ I'm Carrie ~ completely new to this team, and to running, (since the last time I really ran well or far was about 15 years ago!) Anyway, I'm here with SparkPeople to take off about 50 lbs and here on this board because some insane (I think) part of me wants to run a 5K this summer. I walked and jogged 1.1 miles this morning and although it felt like it might kill me, I'm excited to get more fit and to be able to do more. The biggest step for me was really that first step on the pavement, because I had to let go of any embarrassment about the jiggly body parts that I really wish didn't jiggle....I'm going to use the couch to 5K running program and see where it takes me!

BEANBREEN My first 5K was 47 minutes. You are ready as others are back there too. You will start dropping pounds and get faster.

Oh yeah, a year later I finished the 10K for the same race in about 65 minutes.

Enjoy the process of learning to get better.

In the end, the choice you make makes you.

I was a subscriber to Runner's World for years, and they had a group of "Penguins" the motto was "waddle on". It was similar to this group. It is not about how fast you go but that you bother at all.

Juggler101 - that's too funny, but you're right. Just being in the race means something.

BeanBreen - 48 minutes??? My daughter who is 5'5" and 140 did her first 5k in 44 minutes. So... you go girl!

Hello, I hope this is the right team for me. I joined the road runners team but I really didn't feel like I fit in. I just started to walk/jog 2wks ago. I love it. My 1st race is May 18 2008, It's a Mother's day race.(a week late)All I hope to do is finish the race. This race time is just a time. Right now I'm walk/running 3.1miles in about 48min.. Slow I know, but I'm also 5'3" and 193lbs. so I'll take it. I hope to meet some new people, and like what said, I hope this team is for me.
Have a great day everyone.

Walking is allowed for these 5K races. Many people do it for at least part of the week.

I find every other day about all I can run. Generally walk on the other days.

Hello! This team definitely describes me! I started last summer doing the C25K program...finished in the fall and signed up for my first 5k race in Nov. I never finished :( I totally felt like such a failure and used every excuse I could - from the cold, to my knee hurting, whatever. I'm determined to start up again and actually finish one. I was thinking that maybe I should lose some weight first, but I'm just jumping in. I'm committing to running Mon/Wed/Fri starting this coming Monday! Thanks so much for this team...it's just what I needed!

Beth,

I know I've visited some great sites but the first thing that came into my head was "go as far as you can, as fast as you can, for as long as you can" Repeat...

My name is Gina and I'm a slow, fat, walker. I too had an "aha" moment when viewing vacation photos. My butt was almost as big as the horses! Not a pretty site. I found a workout buddy at SP and we started emailing last March and then working out on Mondays. We clicked so well that 60 minutes would fly by. Too bad the gyms are filling up again, we can't walk so long. We found it better for us to meet MWF so we would actually go!.

The Sheriff's did a 5k nearby last Saturday and I asked if she wanted to do it together. She was so excited when we were finished, we've signed up for another one this weekend! I'm proud of myself for finishing in under 60 minutes when I was truly expecting 75-90!

My short term goals are going to the gym 5 to 6 days a week, and 2 5ks each month.

Long term goals... I've always wanted to do a Marathon

Mid-range goals: faster 5k, 10k, faster 10k, half & faster half.

I've read about so many of you having trouble during the winter that I had to laugh. My problem is summer! I'd much rather be in the air conditioning with a book or by the pool :)

Hi Dixie Mom,

Just to let you know, last August I decided to walk a half in November. And I succeeded. So you have plenty of time to train. Such fun to finish something I had never dreamed of doing until 4 months earlier!

I am trying to beat the 10 minute mile mark, but even at the end of last year, I didn't think that was possible.

You can do it!

In the end, the choice you make makes you.

Love it TLC! My one and only goal is to finish vertically! I would love to be running a 9 min mile but don't really know if that is possible. Right now my best is a 12 min mile and that is for the short haul. Just ran 3 miles in 35 min which is more or less unheard of for me. Anyone out there planning to do the Kiawah Island (SC) marathon in December '08!

Dixiemom - You are not to fat to run a HM. You can always do the galloway walk run methond. That's what I do. I have run both a full and 6 halfs that way. I run anywhere from 3 to 4 mins and walk a min. I am actually a group leader for training program where we take couch potatoes and get the to run a 10 mile race by end of the program. I hadx a 260 lb man finish the program and race. He did awesome. It goes from may to aug so you have plently of time to get readxy for your half. Remember it is not about time it's about finishing and getting the bling. The kenyans will win so no point at worrying about time. Just keep building your induranse and your will do awesome.

Thanks for the welcome! I'd sure love to hear about your experience with the HM's, TLC. I keep wondering if I am still too fat to be running at all much less 13 miles. My knees are giving me some problems.

OMG! I can't believe that I found this team! It is the perfect description of me. I feel like I've found my "home"!! I am most assuredly slow(run a 12 minute mile), fat (have lost 61 lbs but still have 30 or so to go) and a "runner" (term used a little bit loosely)!! I am signing up to run a HM in Dec in Kiawah, SC. I am currently running 2-3 miles but won't start my official training program until the first week in July. Looking forward to meeting some other "slow fat runners"! Teresa

Hi all!

Is there anyone in the group from the NY tri-state area? I'm looking for a fellow Sparkperson to do races with me in the area...I'm probably going to walk about 4.0-4.5 mph through the races (not a big runner) and would love to have someone to spur me on and vice versa!

I lost 70+lbs...and now the hard part, maintaining!

I signed up to walk a half marathon last November, and decided that some time running was rest from the walking.
40 story stair climb, that sounds intense. Welcome to the team.

Hi, Melissa, and welcome to our team!

I can't imagine what it took to climb 40 stories of stairs! There are times when I find it hard to walk up the 14 steps in my house. You certainly have plenty of time to prepare to walk a 1/2 in September. I do recommend joining a training group, if you haven't already.

We're also here to help you stay motivated. Have fun!

Hi my name is Melissa. I grew up thinking that exercise was only for athletes, so early in my life I did not exercise at all. Well as a kid I played some softball and some volleyball and basketball in jr high, but I was never very coordinated, so I gave it up and did not exercise any more. Not until my mid 20s when I discovered the benefits of exercise again. But I still did not take it very seriously. Now I'm in my mid 30s, had 3 babies, and I'm realizing that controlling my weight gets harder and harder as I get older, so now my exercise goals have to adjust also.

I have done a few charity walks (the farthest 6 miles) and a 40 story stair climb. Now I am wanting to do a half marathon in Sept. I plan on walking, because I am sure that I will not be able to run yet. I have always hated running, even as a kid. I have found that I am more motivated to keep moving and working out harder if I have I high goal to achieve. It kind of forces me to work harder daily, knowing that I have to be in shape for a difficult challenge.

I look forward to checking back at this forum!

Is this a guided program you're following? Just curious.

I hear you about the treadmill - I can't stand being on one, myself, lol! Elliptical, however, is another matter, more fun, and I love my TotalGym for strength training.

The program I am doing discourages cardio on the same days as lifting. All energy is devoted to lifting on lifting days!!!

I have always preferred the gazelle/elliptical to the treadmill. Not sure why but the treadmill drives me batty! LOL

I've never worked out on a Gazelle, but it looks like a good way to get your heart rate up! It doesn't quite give you the same workout as a treadmill, but it's probably easier on your knees, at this point.

A few of my running buddies do their runs in the a.m., then strength training in the evening of the same day, really resting on rest days, instead of doing x-training. It has helped them remarkably, and I'm starting to do the same thing.

You might give it a go and see if this helps.

Thanks,

Right now I do intervals indoors on a gazelle (it somewhat simulates running) twice a week and then running outdoors once a week. I think I will go up to twice a week outdoors soon. As of now I only "run" 3 times a week. After my weight lifting program I need my rest days!! LOL

Hi, AM, and welcome our team!

It's great that you've adjusted the C25K program to meet your own ability and preparedness level. You might also want to alternate walks into your runs, to help save your legs. The leading proponent and expert on this is Jeff Galloway, former Olympian, whose training program is incorporated by many other programs, including the one I'm with.

We're here to help. Hope you have fun here!

Hello everyone, I just joined. I started running about 5 weeks ago. I have never run in my life before this so it is a new experience. I started with Couch to 5K but it started out a bit to fast for me so I concocted my own program that tasks 12 weeks instead of 8 or 9. I am in week 2 right now.

I live in Kansas, and this winter has been the worst in years. I am a gym member and I have been working out on a treadmill. It is still hit and miss. I just got to keep trying. First 5K of the year will be in April.

Winter months are difficult, even in the mild winter area I live in. One thing I did was arrange to get to work later so I would have time for a morning run. I continue to sign up for races as that helps me stay motivated to get out on my daily walks & runs.

I am sure you will get back to your routine soon! Little by little does it.

In the end, the choice you make makes you.

Hi, MOP - welcome to our team!

That's great your doc recommended running for your health. Is he also a runner?

During the cooler/cold months, perhaps you can go to the gym and at least get on the treadmill and elliptical to help stay in condition and strengthen your legs. If it's decent out, you'll just have to develop the discipline to get out for 20 minutes, until that becomes 30, and eventually maybe even 45. We all fall off the wagon; but, just a 20-minute run can do wonders for rekindling the waning diligence in keeping up with your workouts.

You can do this, and we're here to help!

Hello to this team. I am a 40 year old male. I began running seriously about three years ago on doctors orders. I have run three 5K's and one 10K. My problem is that I go great during the spring/summer and fall. Then go November to April trying to stay in a routine without much success. Hopefully this will help.

Hi, Lydia - you certainly can make it along this road!

One of my running buddies for our upcoming marathon started out nearly 100 lbs overweight last season, when she trained for the half marathon. She has done 3 half marathons with me and at least 1 or 2 on her own, lost around 50 lbs and has become really strong by working with a personal trainer. She has also become pretty fast! I'm so very proud of her. This will be our first marathon together (the first year I haven't fractured a foot or ankle and had to opt for doing only the half instead).

We train to finish. To us, we fly!

Look for a local running club. If there's a USAFit group near you, check them out. The organization started in Houston and the founder comes up every year to kick off our season; he's so cool!

Good luck!

Hello everyone! I'm new to the team. I am looking for any advice on starting a running program. I am 42 years old and I'm ready to improve my body and health. I know it will be a long road (especially running slow..lol) but, I can and will make it!

Hi, Shirley:

Welcome to SLF and thank you for sharing your story! One of these days, I'll go for the Disney/Goofy Challenge as that one sounds like so much fun - and what a challenge. A couple of my running buddies have done it.

Who cares if you finish last, that you finished is all that matters. My daughter was beating herself up for being the last one to come in at our last 6-mile training run last weekend. I told her that the most important thing to remember is that she was out there and she just has to finish. She has been dealing with a late season IT Band issue that has forced her to walk more than run. She has already done one HM since the injury, so she knows she can do it!

I hope you can to the HM in May with your family. That would be awesome! It's such a cool feeling to have people you love out on that asphalt with you.

Glad you found us, have fun here!

Hi, I am Shirley and I am a slow, fat runner. I have been running since 1986, then I was a slimmer, faster runner. Two babies later I found that I just could not shed the weight (but I am working on it). I ran my first marathon in 1991 (Columbus marathon) and my second in Jan 2007 (Disney World marathon), however, I only made it to 16 miles. I did this at 247 lbs (I have a picture on my spark page).

The past two Octobers I ran in a local HM (Stomp the Grapes, sponsered by a local winery). I finished in last place in 2006 and actually beat two people in 2007. I competed in the Subway Challenge Series in 2007 and have signed up again for 2008.

I am thinking about running the Cleveland HM in May. My oldest daughter and her fiance are running the marathon, my sister is running the 10K, and fiance's dad is running his first HM.

Looking forward to getting to know all you slow fat, runners. I love it, finally a group that suits me just right.

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

Hi, Runcat, and welcome!

Just remember that we slow, fat runners focus on what's important: finishing upright, smiling and not throwing up, lol!

I've been outpaced by women in their 60's. In my first HM, when we had a rare 22F day, I threw my back out at mile 10 and a little "old" lady who had to be 80 paced me to the finish. She was so cute - but, it sure made me feel ridiculous.

Just keep up your good work and let us know how you're doing in preparing for your races.

Welcome back, Barb!

Question for you: I was trying to figure out what you're doing in your profile photo. It looks like you're playing the piano or conducting. So, what *are* you doing? It's an interesting photo!

Hi everyone!! I was so happy to find your team as I am pretty sure that I am the original slow, fat runner! I have two very tall, very thin, very fast running friends that I do races with and they are always off like a shot at the start of the race. And then I run by myself the rest of the way and watch as everyone else, even the 60 year old women, beat me. And good for them!! I mean them no disrespect, just makes me feel like I have to do better next time. Anyway, 5k's are my current race and my goal this year is to do at least 2 10k's in the mix as well as being apart of a relay team for the Detroit Marathon. Has anyone done that one?

Hi, Mys-Tri-Machine, and welcome to our team!

I have a lot of respect for triathletes. My baby sis is one and I've watched some of her competitions. I know you folks train very hard; we have a few on our half marathon training team, and a coach going for her first Ironman in Florida!

Congrats on finishing your first marathon. I know it's hard to carry the extra weight around, been doing it myself - and am finally shedding some of my own baggage! There's hope for anyone, if I can do it, hahaha!

Jump in any time and have a very happy new year!

Hi y'all! Just to introduce myself I do triathlons, charity bike rides, and jsut finished my first marathon, 30 lbs overweight, The knees told me to lose weight before I try it again. Running for 6 hours is ridiculous. I always gain wieght during running training, so now that my season is over, with only one half marathon left on the schedule, Im trying to drop the running weight so I can look better come tri season. Looking forward to chatting with y'all and sharing our challenges and successes!
