Volunteering at the local Wetlands and dinner with my Granddaughter and her family.

5. What/who inspires you ? Friends and family

6. How did you get your SparkName? I'm a mom and my last name means goose in polish. I also have a little craft business called Mother Goose Crafts.

7. What challenges you to want to lose weight? High cholesterol and high blood pressure.

8. What is your wt. loss goal ? I'd like to be around 120.

9.How do you plan to do to attain this goal ? Eat a vegan diet as closely as possible and to move more.

10. Why do you want to lose wt.? To be healthier, to feel more comfortable in my clothes and to be able to take care of myself for a long time to come.

11. What - if any limitations do you have ? It's hard getting up off the floor after playing with the grand kids.

12. What foods really tempt you ? sweets, breads,chocolate cheese

13. What is your favorite food/recipe ? Love it al!

14. What accomplishments are you most proud of, other than your children ? Graduated college, worked as a director of volunteer services, took care of ill husband at home for 22 years. He was completely bedridden for 14 of those years.

15. What hobbies do you have ? Weaver, knitter, spinner, crafter, gardener, church newsletter editor

16. What does a typical weekend look like for you ? Like every other day with the addition of church and the Sunday paper.

17. What kind of job do/did you do, if you are retired? Director of Volunteer Services, activity aide, gift wrapper

19. Is there anything special you would like to do together as a team ? Challenge

20. Have you set a realistic weight loss goal for yourself? 120 -125

21. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee (Whitefish Bay), went to college at the U of Wisconsin, Madison, married a year after graduation and moved to the south west side of Milwaukee to a suburb (West Allis). We lived in a twinplex which we co-owned with my inlaws until we outgrew the house with 5 kids. We built our own ranch style home a little farther west still in West Allis where we had another child, My maiden, elderly aunt lived with us for 17 years during that time. My husband was diagnosed with MS in 1985, became bedridden in 1993 and died in 2007. During that time my aunt passed away, and the kids all left home and have families of their own. All but one live in the immediate area. Of my 6 kids (2 boys, 4 girls( all but one are married., 2 were divorced, 2 remarried twice. I have 18 grandkids, 5 great-grandkids and all but 2 are in this area. My family keeps me busy and though I now have only 2 cats living with me I am seldom lonely as they all drop in quite often. Somehow I've managed to fill up the house with my hobbies. Don't know where all 9 of us fit before. On of my big problems has been learning to shop and cook food for only one.

Hi Ladies. If you don't mind, I'd like to join you all in the hopes of finally getting to my weight loss goal and a healthier life. I'm another Joan and have been with Spark for quite some time. I seem to be on a teeter-totter with the weight - keep on losing the same lbs. over and over again. I'm planning to join you on the challenge for labor day.

14. What accomplishments are you most proud of, other than your children ? That I started counting calories without anyone saying I had to lose weight! I feel proud of 'ME' for sticking this out..

Same as every other day.

17. What kind of job do/did you do, if you are retired? I was the E.O. of our local Real Estate Board.

19. Is there anything special you would like to do together as a team ? (like games or challenges) Not really.

20. Have you set a realistic weight loss goal for yourself? Even though we are 70's, we still need to be in the healthy weight ranges!!!! I would love to be 160 again .. will see how it goes.

21. Tell us a little bit about yourself: We have been married for 55 years (this November). We have 5 kids .. 1 girl (oldest .. 53) & 4 sons (51, 50, 48 & 43).. 15 Grandkids & 3 great-grandkids. I love watching my grandkids doing sports .. we are a very athletic family. DH & me spent most of our life volunteering in youth sports (hockey; baseball; soccer; dirtbike racing; boxing .. you name it we've been there!)

8. What is your wt. loss goal ? I went from 186 lbs to 166 then gained 5 lbs so I'm restarting at 171. I originally though I wanted to get down to 125 but after losing 20 lbs I'm thinking maybe 135 or 145

9.How do you plan to do to attain this goal ? Heat healthy. Unfortuately I hate exercise.

10. Why do you want to lose wt.? To be healthy…okay to look better and be able to buy clothes easily

13. What is your favorite food/recipe ? Not sure I have a favorite and when I do it changes.

16. What does a typical weekend look like for you ? No different than any day of the week except for church.. and every other Sunday we have a family dinner here.

21. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I met my husband in the 2nd grade. In those days the class was combined with the 3rd grade which he was in. We had 3 children boy, girl, boy. We live just outside the city limits on 7 acres. We built the house in 1989. My mother had a modular on the land until she passed and we lived in a modular so now we have 2 rentals. Our daughter lives in one.

6. How did you get your SparkName? Mary is my first name, which I never use, and there apparently were too many Joyce’s, so I combined my first and second and it required a 2 even for that…

7. What challenges you to want to lose weight? To keep my bloodwork numbers in a “safe” range and to be healthy

8. What is your wt. loss goal ? I went from 210 pounds to 159 pounds in 2007 and my sciatic started acting up in July of 2008. Since I was unable to exercise with my leg, I gradually gained 18 pounds and have been bouncing back and forth with gaining a pound and losing that pound and perhaps another, but maintaining for the past 2 years…

9.How do you plan to do to attain this goal ? Maintenance is my biggest goal

10. Why do you want to lose wt.? To be healthy…..not thin

11. What - if any limitations do you have ? My sciatic

12. What foods really tempt you ? Real Ice Cream (but I never purchase it…instead I buy slow churned and low fat versions

13. What is your favorite food/recipe ? Chicken and dumplings (homemade)

14. What accomplishments are you most proud of, other than your children ? I am a seamstress and in 1984 I learned to use an electronic knitting machine (that was a challenge).

15. What hobbies do you have ? sewing, knitting and learning the computer and the new electronic I-pods and book reader. Our 39 year old grandson is my encourager!

16. What does a typical weekend look like for you ? No different than any day of the week except for church..

17. What kind of job do/did you do, if you are retired? I was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home with our children

18. Which is harder for you, meal planning and nutrition - or - exercise? exercise

20. Have you set a realistic weight loss goal for yourself? Even though we are 70's, we still need to be in the healthy weight ranges!!!! I would be pleased to weigh in the 150.s, but my face pays the price with wrinkles

21. Tell us a little bit about yourself. My husband and I will celebrate out 60th wedding anniversary this December 15th, 2010.
We have 3 children….two daughters and one son….They are all married (non are divorced,….yet….and that is a landmark in itself….LOL)
We are blessed with 9 grandchildren.
We are blessed with 5 great grandchildren ( two of our grandchildren married spouses with children from previous relationships)…..we love them all.
Once granddaughter is expecting in March of next year, so we have a housefull at Christmas..
My husband is an avid gardener and was unable to enjoy that hobby this year, as he had 2 separate surgeries…one for his left knee in April and his right knee this July (both on the 12th of the month….that should be easy to remember.

I joined Spark People awhile back and then didn't keep up so now I'm trying to get restarted. I started at 186 got down to 166 and am now back up to 171 and desperate not to regain more. I like to get down to 146 see how I look and feel and them go from there.

Welcome back Fay! As I mentioned on the chat thread, I went to put on your wedding anniversary yesterday and couldn't find you! I do hope you and Bob had a lovely celebration and will enjoy many more happy anniversaries!

With your vision fraying and the balance problem, night time walking would not be wise ALTORECORDER. (is there another name you wish us to call you by?) I'm sure being with sparks will help you find other ways to exercise. I walk indoors in big stores or on my treadmill and I use a stationary bicycle which is set up in my living room.

Come in and talk to us on the chat thread, you may find some ideas there and the girls are always so friendly and helpful. You've come to a good team!

I'm off to bed, was away most of yesterday and again today! Regular gadabout this weekend, lol. Goodnight girls!

Hello, All. Seems I've had to join the team twice, because it mysteriously disappeared from my page. I'm back. To introduce myself: I'm retired, living in southern New Mexico with retired spouse. The season was triple-digit and early, which cut into my ability to do much walking outdoors. I used to happily walk in the cool of the night, but with fraying vision and declining balance, that is no longer wise. I miss that. I always loved walking outdoors at night. So, another hurdle to fitness and weight goals. I'm hoping that Spark will help me over this patch. Enjoy reading all your posts.


It's tough growing up at any age.

I have been lost again due to computer problems. Hope it is settled and stable now as I begin again. I did keep up with more of my exercises and watched my diet pretty well, but reporting it is much more effective.

hello sherry, i see you live in arizona. I moved to KY from Wickenburg AZ. Loved it there, but after my husband died wanted to be close to family. I forgot how cold the winters can get in KY and how humid the summers can get. Oh well. Its good to be with my son

hello all, my name is Jan. I am anxious about being involved with the spark people. I am a christian woman, love the Lord dearly. I have put onmy ambition board that I want to start exercising 15 minutes a day, I should remark that I want to work my way up to 15 minutes. I have COPD, so I have been sedentary for quite some time. But,talking to my doctor, he feel that taking small steps and I will be there before I know it. Course eating right has a lot to do with it too. lol

Mother to 3; GM to 3 (4?) 1 1/2 years ago was reconnected with a grandson who was given up for adoption. He, his wife and 2 children have become quite involved with our lives and we like to include them as family.
I am not only a quiet person but also very inactive. Having a hard time getting me moving.

This is from my Spark Page. I have always been chubby/obese. My goal at this time is just to get to a healthier weight doing it in a healthy way which I believe is the Spark way.

Hi everyone
I am Sherry and live in Surprise, Arizona. I am a widow with 4 wonderful children and 9 grandchildren None of which live near me. All of my grandchildren are in the Chicago area where I lived before moving to Arizona.

I like to travel, go to Las Vegas, sew, quilt, scrapbook and make some jewellery. It is my new thing.

I am back at Spark for the third time and I have to do this now. I think I have the right mind set as I am doing this for me and not for someone else.

Welcome to our team. I haven't been on this team very long, but find it very friendly and encouraging. I suggest you buy The Spark book and do the 28-day program. It has been so helpful. This is my second time on Sparkpeople. The first time I didn't get active. This time my weight (about same amount as you to lose) is really beginning to bother me physically, so I am really getting into it. I find you get as much out as you put in. Also the first time they didn't have The Spark.

Good luck to you. I am 70. Let's see who can get down first. I am not a competitive person, but can always use some motivation. emoticon Dee

Good Morning all !! I just joined your forum and really like what I have read sofar. I am 71(soon to be 72) and recovering from 2nd heart attack..Go to Cardiac rehab. 3x's a week and today my right leg is killing me..I need to lose 70lbs BUT I have no appetite so I hardly eat which we know prevents good healthy weight loss, So starting today I am planning out a healthy menu, saw some interesting Spark menus, so best go get started or I'll be here all day...
I don't know how to add my weight ticker to page..

grammap I was just reading your answers to questions on Aug. 27 2009. You have some of the same physical problems as I have. can you exercise at all?

Hello Gloria, I sent a message to grammap telling her I haven't been around because I had a setback. I had a lot of pain from walking on cement and with my physical problems that wasn't a good idea. emoticon

Hello Nan and a warm welcome to our team! Starting on Sparks can feel a bit overwhelming at first, so much to read, see, look at ~ but just do a bit every day and you'll soon have the hang of it.

I am short too, 5 feet tall, around 30 lbs overweight and I'd describe my build as "square", lol. Yes, it's VERY hard to get clothes that fit properly in all the right places! I've tried 'diets' too and lost weight but quickly put it back on and more when I went off them. Sparks is more of a healthy lifestyle, which means it's a way to live for the rest of our lives and speaking of which ~ I, too, wish for you to outlive your knee replacements! That is wonderful encouragement to get the weight off.

Hello...My name is Nan and this is my third week of trying to figure out this whole program! I am short and 38 pounds overweight, so buying clothing is a nightmare. I have tried nearly every diet and program known to man...sometimes successful, most times not. I am a fairly active 76 year old person who has had both knees replaced and I really want to live long enough to wear them out.

So good to hear from another widow and one who has seen good results from this program. I will plan on getting on the chat line...have to find it first ((~.~)) but will try to spend some time tomorrow. I taught an ongoing Bible study for a group of widows this afternoon. We're using Martha Peace's excellent book "Attitudes of a Transformed Heart." Are you familiar with it? I would add an emoticon but every time I've tried it I get text instead!

Hi, I am a widow with 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. I live with one of my daughters and feel very blessed to be welcome there. I have had a number of health problems including a bizarre neurological disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Doctors thought I would never walk again and experimented with a powerful cocktail of medications that did result in my walking again but also a weight gain of 80 lbs. Then a thyroid disorder resulted in its being removed and I gained even more weight. So I'm trying hard to get back to healthy eating and exercise. I used to run 3 miles a day 5 times a week until the RSD struck me in 1991 and I haven't been able to exercise again until now. I'm very impressed with this website and hope to benefit and be benefited. I am a Christian and I teach Bible studies and speak for women's groups.

Hi, my name is Anne. I've been part of SparkPeople off and on for quite a few years - never reaching my goal. About once a year, I start getting serious about getting in better shape and it's that time of the year again. My husband was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about a year ago and was doing well with exercise and weight loss but not really eating like he should. He came across a diabetic book that looked like it would be helpful - it includes diet menus and recipes and he decided he'd like to do it and I thought it sounded like a good idea for both of us. We are sharing the cooking and are being very careful with portion control and experimenting with eating healthy things that we'd never tried before - it's been fun and makes the cold winter days go by faster being excited about something different. And I've lost 5 lbs in 3 weeks just by eating properly. Being able to do this together is great!

Tell us a little bit about yourself ~I was born in Arkansas, got married in Arkansas my DH was in the Air Force so we went wherever he was stationed for the next 20 years, retired in Sherwood, AR where he was Mayor for 14 years before he died with cancer in 1992, we had two daughters, one died two years ago 2008. Five years after he died in 1996 I married my now DH and we live in Sherwood, Arkansas. together we have 8 DC,16DGC,and 7 GGC. I was always thin until around 40, then started slowing gaining weight and have not lost it yet once I lost down to goal but not for long. My father was a large man but my mother was small.

Hi, my name is Elma. I am 72 years old and am adament that I am going to lose this weight this year. I live in Tennessee and moved her 14 years ago from South Africa. I love sewing and I also bake and decorate wedding cakes and cakes for all other occassions. Would love to hear from other team members.
