Hello and welcome. I love yoga and it is definitely a lifestyle not a sport. I was having that discussion with my uncle and kept telling him that there is no such thing as competetive yoga. He was stunned! I tried ashtanga yoga yesterday for the first time and I was challenged. It is a deeply mubling experience to touch our physical limit. I just let myself go into the breath. It was great!

agreed! I've had instructors question whether or not I was moving through poses as far as I physically could... I've never been able to touch my toes!

I'm not flexible either. I can't sit in padmasana (lotus) and I have been practicing regularly for well over 2 years, and off and on for several years before that. Hoping yoga does not become "competitive" - yoga is so much more than flexibility ... it is a lifestyle, it can be very spiritual (as you make it). I used to be addicted to meditation, however. No gumby is going to succeed in making me feel bad about myself due to a perceived lack of flexibility, because we are all one in spirit - and thus they would be just slapping themselves in the face ... !

I just joined. I've taken yoga in the past, but have never been flexible. I'm on a mission! I'm doing a 30 day stretch (haha) of yoga! Today will be day 4. We will see how I feel towards the end! I'm sure the poses will become easier. I'm sore right between my shoulder blades!
