I'm like Christy. I can't cheat a little. I'm better off to leave certain things alone. Once I get started on the wrong path the cravings start and I'm doomed for the day.

emoticon I'm glad you found us. This team is full of informative and supporting folks.

I'm sorry to hear that your mom is not doing well managing her blood sugar. I am a type II diabetic myself and 5 years later I am still manage it with diet and exercise alone by eating a low carb diet. I need to fess up and say that I did fall off the wagon a time or two and have ignored my diabetes at times. It is very difficult to live on a restrictive diet but for diabetes, a low carb diet is a life saver. The ADA will preach moderation in all foods and for some this may be possible but for me, once I start eating chips and crackers and sweets, I can't control my portions and it often crave even more of the same types of foods. It becomes an all out binge so I am much better off without those foods in my diet even in small amounts.

Your mom is lucky to have you looking out for her. Even though you are right to be concerned about her heath, please be sure to do it with compassion and do not preach or try to guilt her into compliance. She will do much better when she becomes self motivated. I would encourage her to test her blood sugar frequently before and after meals. Seeing the difference on the meter will help her to take control of her eating. It may be time for a refresher course on diabetes, get a book such as diabetes for dummies, or watch the show TV show dlife or visit dlife.com. Help empower your mom to take control of this disease.

emoticon to the team. I'm only 3 months into the smart carbing lifestyle and know that it works - in the way I feel and in what I weigh. Hate to say that I still get tempted and this stalls me out but the more I practice the more consistent I get. Keep us posted on your progress. You never know who you'll inspire. Wish you much luck on this journey!

Many of us had the same problem with the low fat diets. I eat lots of veggies as well.

I hope your mom sees the light soon and gets on the low carb wagon.

I had no idea this team existed. I love it!

I have been a low fat, low calorie, low sugar, all whle wheat dieter for YEARS! With NO success. I must admit I have also been anti-Atkins and anti-carbfree also.

My sister inlaw finally convinced me to try it the week before Fathers Day. I have lost 11 pounds since then. It does work! I don't count carbs. In my opinion veggies are good for me and I will eat as many as I can. I simply don't eat bread, rice, noodles, potatoes, crackers, or chips - except on rare occasions, and even then....they are limited.

I also found out the week of Fathers Day that my mom has not been honest with her blood sugar. Her BS the week before Fathers Day was 336. For those who don't know about BS...it should be under 120. I also have to add she is on insulin and is only 64 years young.

As I walked around the kitchen while visiting for Fathers Day, it was filled to the brim with Full Fat Potato Chips, Tortilla Chips, every cracker imaginable, more chips and more sweet treats! Not exactly what you expect to find in a Diabetic Kitchen. Her excuse was "Oh, that's for your father." or "That's for the grandkids." I had to explain my kids don't need that stuff, and will eat apples just fine without the gooey caramel dip.

Well, we had a family meeting and everyone agreed the white stuff in the kitchen has to go. She gained 2 shelves in the pantry and about 3 feet of counter top space. Her blood sugar is still not where it should be (she cheats) but it is atleast below 200. It's funny how she has gone to the Nutrition Class twice and is still a little clueless about carbs.

Anyway, glad to have found a Smart low-carb team.
