Dear Rosetattoo823: I can help you out quite a bit as I have spinal fusion from C2 to C7 due to a horrible car accident. I am now in a recovery phase and feeling not too bad but the journey to get where I am was not easy or short! If you want any specific info just contact me and I will try to help you out. I know all about the gaining weight, neck & back pain, headaches etc. etc. etc........... the main thing I want to say to you is NEVER EVER GIVE UP OR GIVE IN! I've been through it all! I am glad to help you out in any way I can. I usually check my Spark site and mail every night but sometimes I miss a day due to work. Good luck with your issues - I will keep you in my thoughts and my prayers because I actually have walked in the same shoes!

Enjoy the people God has given you in your life. Enjoy their presence and remember - One day He will want them back!

Don't take anyone or anything for granted.

Well, unfortunately I was not able to continue to see him. My employer changed my position and took away my health insurance right when I got the okay to go back to work fulltime and start physical therapy. I think that's a lot of my issues a whole year later! Seems like if I do anything extra or much more than just go to work, I end up paying for it. Hoping to find some supprt here, since all of you will relate.

I have also had both cervical fusion and lumbar fusion. I strongly recommend that you follow your doctor's recommendations for exercise, in order not to hurt yourself more. Good luck!

Hello. I am new to the team, but not new to SP. Last summer, I had two neck surgeries. I fusion (donor bone and titanium plate) for two disks. A month after first surgery, the disc below the fusion went out. Second surgery a month later. The horrible, excruciating pain in right shoulder is gone - sometimes get a twinge or a bad day with it. Still have pain and burning, weakness, loss of intricate motor skills in left arm. But, after 2nd surgery, can now sleep laying down, put make up on, wash face, etc. Seems like if I do anything "extra", then I have a bout of pain. Some nights neck pain moves up into the back of my head, with a horrible headache. I am tired, gaining weight, and feeling lazy. Also had lower back surgery, many years ago. Now, that is acting up again. How do you get yourself to exercise when you are in pain??? I need some help because gaining more weight is not going to help my spine.

One meal at a time, one work out at a time, one day at a time.

I had C4-7 with donor bone and all the hardware done on 11 Feb 10. I just got back to work a week ago. Ive had low back problems for years and the neck presented about 5 years ago. My Dr told me there was nothing wrong and deal with the pain. So I did until I cried on the way home every night from work. I also have degenerative disc disease, lumbar stenosis and a left hip labral tear. So Im in lovely condition. I have to work I have no other choice if I want to live, eat, pay bills. Though thats about all I do these days. I went for surgery on the neck to get my life back and now they want to do hip surgery. I still have pain in my neck, arms and upper back, so although they removed the pressure I have risidual pain from having my nerves crushed for so long. Drs want me to lose weight and so do I. But they dont have an answer of how Im to do this if I cant walk, stand or sit for any amount of time. Im actually not depressed about all this, Ive gotten through that phase. Now Im just in limbo.

Had cervical fusion with donor bone several years ago. Now have another herniated cervical disc below the previous surgery. Trying weight loss and exercise to keep it under control. So far it is helping. Also helping the lumbar fusion and additional herniated disc there!

I had a fusion c-3 to c-4 beginning of 99 when I was 20. I am now 32. Though lucky to not be paralyzed from neck down, still in pain. I also for the past 5 yrs get clicking whenever I walk (stride, treadmill, etc.) I also have Psoriatic Arthritis that likes to attack injury areas. I was told after my surgery that being fused higher up that most put me at risk for complete break if in accident, trauma etc. It was over 10 yrs ago so medicine is constantly evolving, so who knows now.

I had a bone fusion from my F5 to S1, having muscle and nerve problems in legs ever since, making losing weight and exercising almost impossible.

Hey Guys,

I was so happy to find this group. I have had 2 fusions and am here to offer support to anyone who needs it. I have 2 vertebrae at the top of my neck and three at the bottom, the rest of my spine is fused. Before surgery I was 109 lbs and after 4 months of bedrest, I was at 150. A few years later I developed Fibromyalgia and have been disabled with it for 3 years now. That sedentary lifestyle has led to tremendous weight gain. I am just starting to ease into exercising again and make it a daily part of my life. Abs have always been a big issue for me. I was advised to do ab exercises while lying flat, no situps. Does anyone follow a routine this way? I can't recall how to do the exercises anymore. I will search online and add a link here if I find an informative site. Don't give up and don't be fooled. This ab work does work and I actually find it even more challenging than the traditional way. I hope this finds you all doing well and I look forward to getting to know everyone.

I was told not to lift anything over 20 lbs, no laundry, changing sheets or vacuuming for 6 weeks after surgery. The only exercise that I can do now is walk. Hope this info helps and that you continue to do well!

I had a C6-C7 decompression and donor bone fusion (with titanium plate and 4 screws) 2 weeks ago. Fortunately I had minimal pain, just left arm numbness. Surgery never fixed numbness but prevents worsening.

I wasn't given much in the way of instructions, just "Take it easy", wear the collar 2 weeks, see you in 8 weeks.

Surgeon did tell me I would have no restrictions at all after healing (i.e. after a couple of months)...any suggestions or comments?

Hi, I just had a C5-6 fusion 1 weeks ago and looked for a team like this one. I am frustrated with the limitations but am trying hard to follow the post-op instructions for good results. Would like to hear how long you were off work and any suggestions for returning. I have a desk job, mostly on the computer.

Hi Lisa! Yes C6-C7 and I am glad to hear that for now you are going to skip the surgery. One day at a time is my motto :) I had a recent injury that had me scared I might have to return back to the operating table. My biggest struggle is keeping the pain at bay, while staying active enough to keep the weight off, and not getting frustrated. Keep up the therapy, good luck with the recovery and I hope to hear more from you!

Hi, Lisa!
I have just returned to Sparks after a long break. Primarily due to pain and inability to exercise. I finally broke down last summer and had the fusion surgery done on C 5-6-7 just like you. I am just starting to be able to be more active, but am limited as far as upper body exercise which irritates my neck and seems to make the pain return temporarily. I have wondered what might happen to me if I am ever involved in an accident again that injured the disks above and below my fusion, Sounds like physical therapy is helping you some? I weigh a lot more than you and am finding it hard to get the weight off. I would love to hear from you on how you are doing since you posted this message.

Hi, My name is Lisa. I live in PA. I had fusion to C5, 6 & 7 in July of 2007 and I was doing great but I was just in an auto accident Sept. 5th of this year and have been told I have two more herniated discs just above and below the fusion. My neurosurgeon does not want to rush into surgery again so I have gone through physical therapy and one steroid shot in the spine so far. All the posts I have read on here have been folks with lower back fusions. Anyone else with fusion in their neck or just below their neck?
