Hi i'm shawn. i joined this group a while ago but i'm decided to get active with it now that i've been active again for myself on sparkpeople. i have four children 16, 12, 10, 8. my two of my children are very overweight. one is a little meaty. and my boy has no fat. i try to feed them healthy but i don't know where the pounds are coming from. well, my 10 year old is just plain lazy so is my 16 year old. so that is probably the case with them. they go outside and play and ride bikes and play sports. so i don't know what else to do. i don't buy junk food. only fruit for snack. however it's hard to buy a lot of the healthy stuff when you're feeding six people on less than 500 a month. gotta buy the cheap meat. lol. so this is my story.

Hi, I'm Lisa. I have two little girls; ages 3 and 5. My girls are both extremely healthy, but I would like to continue that as the get older. I want to teach them good habits while they are young so they don't have to worry about weight when they get older. emoticon

Hi. I'm Susie. I joined this group to exchange experiences and tips, maybe some recipes and goals and to find encouragement. We are not alone--it takes a Village to raise a child. emoticon

Hello, I'm Stephanie from South Carolina. I'm a married mother of two. I've decided very recently to live a healthier life style. I realize that it is a life style change and not a diet. My goal is to go from 245 pounds to 180 pounds or from a size 18 to a size 14. I have lost 8 pounds in my first 2 weeks. I'm very excited. My doctor is also delighted. I've told him about spark people, and he is going to share it with other patients who are trying to loose weight.

Hi I'm Tammy and I have two daughters ages 17 and 20. All three of us have hypothyroid condition and the girls have other health problems and it all combines to make us each have major weight issues. This has been very hard on all of us. We each have mobility issues so it is hard for us to get exercise. My 20 yr old has twisted thigh bones from a birth defect but I'm happy to say she has started swimming at her college pool, My 17 yr old has psoriatic arthritis and it is mainly her that I'm trying to motivate. As for myself I have plantar fasciitis foot problems that makes walking painful but that is directly caused by my weight problems so I am extremely interested in losing weight. I look forward to meeting all of you and hope I get some great ideas from the group. Thanks!

My 7 y.o. stepdaughter just weighed in at 111.5 lbs at about 54" tall. We have started a new eating plan now, 3 weeks. We are starting to incorporate healthier choices for the whole family, fat free, light, sugar free. My husband and I are also overweight, as well as my 17 y.o. son. The other 3 kids are great, two of them could actually gain some. We don't want her to feel bad about her weight, but we know it is unhealthy for her. I also worry about her being picked on by other kids as she gets older. Kids can be mean. So we are focusing on the healthy aspect. Also, 106 lbs at 5' is a great weight. When I was 117 at 5'1" I was in a size 3. Now I would love to be in a size 8. Good luck and focus on healthy, not skinny.

Hello, my name is Maria single mother to a 9 year old son who does have a weight issue. I am struggling with how to get through to him to watch what he eats and how much so that he can loose the excess weight. My mom (who I live with right now, and who is thin) is helpful in some ways and detrimental in other ways, she will wake him up early for what I like to term "Bootcamp" but then afterward she will allow him to drink 32 - 44 oz of soda/slurpee.

I am working on loosing this weight and also creating an environment where my son can be healthy, make wise choices and loose weight too. My son does not like to walk but and he did perk up a bit with i-pod, he loves to swim but is not much of a sports type of guy, and he will occasionally bounce around when I am working out at the house...

So needless to say I need encouragement, ideas, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!!!

Hi all! My name is Corinna. I have a 2.5 year old daughter. She has no weight issues yet (of course) but with my genes if she's not careful when she's a little older she might run into issues. Either way, I want her to be healthy and have a good self image, and I'd like to start now figuring out the best ways to keep her this way. She loves swimming, running around, playing sports, etc, as much as a toddler can do. I'm hoping to get some ideas of how to keep her on the right track.

sorry, i thought i had already introduced myself. i am a retired mom/grandmom to a wonderful, challenging 10 year old. (not my only one just the only one left in the nest). i am homeschooling our gal after trying the last 2 1/5 years of disaster in public school which were preceded by homeschooling. i have lost 110 lbs but when i lost it i was not very strong and very sickly so i came to sparkpeople looking for a way to get healthy. it is working and i am very grateful. the fitness tracking and exercise demos have offered me what the trainer could not and the nutrition tracker allows me the ability to make sure that i am not only eating enough but the right enough. ya'll are awesome and the support i have receive from fellow sparkpeople has truly been heartfelt. emoticon emoticon

Hi! My name is Angie. I have two girls....Kimberlie is almost 10 and Katelyn is 5(and a half!) Katelyn takes after her daddy and is thin. Kimberlie is just like her mommy and is a chunk. She is really starting to become conscience of her weight. I have had people tell my how over-weight I have been all my life and I don't want her to grow up the same way. I really want to help her in a healthy way. So any advice would be appreciated.

Hello! I'm Jennifer, and I stumbled on this group by accident... Here's why I joined...

I don't have any kids of my own, but my boyfriend has two awesome kids, Seth (turning 8 next month) and Sophie (turned 6 last month). We have them at our house half of each week, and they're at their mother's the other half of the week. Their mother and her boyfriend are lifetime McDonald's employees, and they don't feed the kids very well. For example, they come over on Saturday mornings with YooHoo, baggies of sugar cereal, and sticky cereal bars, (which Justin and I usually take from them before cooking more wholesome stuff for all of us), and one day we were told that their dinner the night before (at their mom's house) was "two string cheese and a cookie, but we're not supposed to tell you" and another night Seth told me that "Mommy said that the cereal and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches we had were dinner... Oh, and my sandwich had marshmallows too."

Justin is a runner and studying to be a nutritionist, and my mom raised my sibs and me to have good sense about the things we were eating... He and I are doing the best we can to feed the kids well when we have them, but there have been many tears and questions (mainly from Seth) when we won't put the super-colored, HFCS-laden junk food in the grocery cart just because their mom does... But he's gotten to where we can usually placate him by letting him pick whatever fruits he wants. Sophie is easygoing about all of it, and she loves trying new foods, which I love about her. She also knows I'm losing weight and exercising, so she pokes at my belly and says, "Jen's losing her floppy!" and then goes to the fridge and brings me back a baby carrot to help. So the healthy habits are starting to make an impression on them, which really makes me feel like we're doing something good.

I'm happy to have found this group, and I hope to find some good ideas for snacks to add to my current "arsenal", and see if I can get some kid-friendly conversation points about good nutrition that we can use when we talk to Seth and Sophie.

Sorry this was so long! I just wanted to let you guys know where I'm coming from. :)

Hi I am a 66 year old grandmother who is looking for ideas of ways to help keep the grandkids healthy and from getting overweight. So far the only one you could consider chunky is the baby who is 22 months. I am not worried about her because the others were like that when they were toddlers. I do not want them to have the problems I have had.

Hi all I have a 9 yr old girl I've been a single mom most that time so my daughter and I do everything together. She is a petite thing. She just got her first 7 speed bike, we try to ride together a couple times a week. Saddly she leaves next weekend to spend the rest of her summer in SD with her step dad and his family. I guess I should tell you something about me huh? Well I'm 28, quit smoking in Feb. gained 7 lbs doing so, I'm here to lose that, and my very unhealthy and unbalanced eating habits (chocolate isn't a group on the new plate is it?) I like to be active, being outdoors, animals, and reading. Plan on getting a jump rope soon one more thing I can do with my girl!

Hello, my name is Trista. I've been wanting to lose weight for a long time. But wanting to do it and actually doing it are two different things. So I'm making the change today towards a healthier lifestyle. I saw this group and thought it would be great because I have a 2-year old son that I want to teach to live a healthy life. I can tell you now, he eats far healthier than I do. I've had to stop myself and think why is it not ok for him to have that extra cookie, when I can sit eat at least five of them easily. So I want to do this for myself. It would help me to feel better about myself, and I want to set a good example.

Hi, Glad to find this team.
My name is lisa I am married and the mother of two childred. Son (12) he is the one who struggles with his weight and a daughter (7) who can eat, eat, and eat and never weighs over 50 YES I SAID 50. but I want the whole family to get healthy. Both me and the hubby work full time and we have introduced some bad eating habits to both kids from fast food to junk food always within reach. Both me and the hubby have high blood pressure and I am ready to turn things around now. My son is 5'4 and weighs 190 and he is in middle school and I see him becoming more and more withdrawn due to not feeling comfortable in his own skin. He has come to me several times and wants to make changes but looks to me for guidance. I have us signed up for a free program at my job but that does not start until July I don't want to waste anymore time.

New to this team, but not to SP. I'm Shannon, and I have a 7-year-old daughter who is already overweight. I know that her weight issues are partly my genes (poor kid) and partly my allowing her to eat poorly for so long. I'm back on SP to relose the 50 (now 40) pounds I gained back after a fantastic 85-pound loss, and it's time to get my little one on track, too. We already have a "no sweets during the day" rule - she gets one small sweet treat at night with some fruit. The hard part will be getting her active. She's very much her mama's kid and would rather lay around and read or play on the computer. I'm hoping that as she sees me getting stronger and leaner, and because I'm the mama and I say so, I can get her moving more and slimming down.

~Shannon~

Hi, my name is Carey and I live near South Bend Indiana. I have a 12 year old son and a 19 year old daughter. My DH and I both work long hours my family has fallen into the habit of going out to eat or eating fast food several times a week. Exercise when done has been sporadic. The weight and health of everyone in our house has suffered as a result of this. I have made several attempts to get us back on the right track, but my attempts were met with such resistance that I always get discouraged and give in. My son has has some serious stomach problems this past year and I am determined to make some serious changes in the way that we eat and the way that we spend our time. I know that this is going to be an uphill battle, but DH seems to be on-board. With his help and the support of this team, I know that I can succeed.

Hello! My name is Terri. I am a single mother of one (Lillianna [Lilli] who is 4 years old) and a student at Northern Arizona University. My daughter, like Tigger's kids, enjoys olives for snacks... along with other things. I live with my sister and nephew (Kyler, 5) and have to consider Kyler for a lot of things as it's like I have two kids. Kyler's favorite healthy snack is cucumber. He'll eat a whole pound of it in one sitting if we let him. Wish I could get that kind of love tward veggies! LoL!!! Workin' on it!

Congratulations on your weight loss and your decision to be a good role model for your son! My children are a big motivator for me also. I don't know if it's an option for you but I ended up being able to help out at practices for my kids which keeps me moving around. I also know some moms who walk around the fields while the kids practice.

Obviously, mom of Jack, who is 9. He is active in 2 baseball leagues, a fall football team and in the winter he is on swim team. When he was 2y/o I had gastric bypass because I was 272 lbs and was starting to see a life for Jack that included him having "the fat mom."
I lost 110lbs and have maintained in the 160s since then. Now that he is so avtice, I am often left sittting at various practices. So now I have decided to "tone the flab" and hopefully lose some lbs too and help Jack make better food choices along the way!!!!
I tend to eat lower carb foods because of the GB surgery. Any healthy snack or meal recipes would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Wow, I would never have imagined a kids fave snack being black olives. Then again my five year old loves sushi and vegetarian stuffed grape leaves (also my faves). I think we forget how much they want to be like us and if we are eatting it they want a bite too.

Hi! I am new to the team, but been off and on with SparkPeople for a few years now. I'm really needing to get back into shape, and my kids are still active (thank God), so hopefully I can do it! My kids have snacks, bad ones like everyone else's snacks, but their favs are black olives, tomatoes, carrots, cheese, yogurt, grapes, apples, bananas. Pretty much in that order! I have three daughters, 10, 7, and 5.

I am back. I was here before & with the inactivity of the team, I left. I see what is going on here & I am interested in getting my kids more involved in leading healthy lives. I am a stay-at-home mom of two dd's - 9 & 6.

I hope to learn new things & also hope to help my fellow Sparkers!

Hi! I'm a school bus driving mama of 3. I joined this team because I love the idea of including my kids in my quest toward a health lifestyle. I have struggled with my weight since the birth of my 1st child 11 years ago. I'm tired of being heavy and ready for a real and permanent change.

Hi! I'm a mother of 3 and a childcare provider out of my home. I joined this team because I find it difficult to find healthy foods and snacks that the kids will want to eat. It always comes back to the same stuff, and they're getting sick and tired of it (and I am too!) and we end up falling back on junkfood at night or on week-ends. I can't seem to lose the 30 pounds I need to lose and when I do make changes in our eating habits, the kids find it hard and the boyfriend who has no weight problems whatsoever, just keeps eating junkfood and I finally give up... So I'm hoping a little support or advice from people who have families like mine might help...

Looking forward to chatting!

Hi :-) I'm Mandy. I'm 33 years old, married with three adopted children and two grown step-kids. I'm a teacher, but right now I stay home with my kids - which is exactly perfect for me right now. I've actually been a member of SparkPeople for about a year, but haven't ever joined any teams or gotten involved with the community aspect of it. I've been battling my last 30 pounds for that year. In January I had surgery, my gall bladder removed and a partial nephrectomy (kidney cancer) and during the recovery I was able to lose 10 pounds, which I've kept off for 10 weeks. I figured maybe the best way to get these last 20 lbs off is to do something different, so I decided to join a team and get involved. emoticon

Hi! I'm Angela. I joined spark years ago and have been on and off. 2011 is the year for me to take the steps to live healthier. My kids are pretty much healthy, but summer is coming up and I'm looking for ideas from others on keeping us going and eating healthy!

Hi I'm just starting out with SparkPeople and am really excited. My kids are pretty healthy but I've noticed as they are entering teen years their food choices are getting worse and I have less control over it. School's dietary requirements aren't really very good and nutritionally, they are only required to look at weekly goals. IMHO anyone who considered tater tots as the healthy vegetable choice is insane!
I'm looking at ways to encourage my kids to make good food choices, teaching them to read labels and try new foods. Snacking is heavy at my house. We are grazers plus with busy lives and lots of activities we are always on the go. I would like to find convenient foods that aren't processed and can be just as filling and much healthier.

hi sephanie welcome to the team looks like our kids are much the same age, mine have just turned 8,5 and 2 in the last few months.it is great that your husband and son is supporting you.my husband is more of a hinderance as help, lol.like you i am also doing it alone(not so alone now i found spark)gyms are too expensive especially when you need the babysitting surface and the best time for me to exercise is when the kids are in bed either in the morning or in the night though there is some exercise i can do with the kids .just jump in and join the fun.look forward to getting to know you better on the threads and good luck with your goals. emoticon

Welcome to the team, Stephanie! You have taken the first step by realizing there is a long road ahead and it will take work. On SP and this team you will find the support and motivation to help you. I live in an apartment and find myself working out alone as well so i understand how discouraging it can be.

Hello all, my name is Stephanie. I have three children who will be 7, 5, and 2 in a couple months. I have been overweight since childhood and it has only gotten worse since my first pregnancy. I hovered around 170 before my oldest and when I got pregnant with my youngest I was 210. It has ballooned out of control and I nearly hit 240 on my 30th birthday last month. This time around I am sticking to it and I have great support now. My boyfriend an my oldest both encourage me. We live in a small apartment so most of my exercising will be by myself but I look forward to warmer weather when we can take more walks to the park as a family. I started my journey on March 1st and I plan to be 140 by March 1st of next year.

Welcome to the team! It's great to see that so many parents are trying to get their kids active by being active with them. We are working to rejuvenate the Kids' Health team so you joined in the nick of time. We are starting a new series of weekly challenges tomorrow if you're interested in participating... it may be just what you need to stay motivated. Good luck on your weightloss journey!

Hello Everyone!

I joined SparkPeople awhile back but am now really ready to commit to a lifestyle change. I have three children ages 6, 4, and 2. My daughter is going to be my workout partner and we are doing this challange as a part of Lent. I would like to lose 30 pounds by the end of this year. My main weaknesses are portion control and planning time for my workouts. I have been working hard on meal planning and feel like I finally have a good system in place. I am hoping that through this program I will be spending more time with my daughter and showing her how to love and take care of her body.

Hello all! I've been Sparking since 2008. I have a 6 year old daughter and we LOVE our walks! We decided to walk to school every day. It has been a blast to talk and tell stories. It's such a special part of our day. As a family we have taken to walking all together, hubby's Sparking too!, on the weekends and as much during the week. We walk to the local mall, we walk to Sunday breakfasts @ Denny's, post office, etc! It's helped immensely with my weight loss goals. We are all becoming healthy and it rocks to do it as a family!

Keep Sparking All!

Welcome! It's awesome to see other moms who are trying to help their kids out while dealing with so many health issues to overcome! You guys are inspiring! I would love to give you guys advice to help your children but I have no experience with the health issues that you mentioned. I would be more than happy to listen whenever you need it though. Have a wonderful day!

hi my name is karen and i have three sons,8,5 and 2.they all have special needs my older son is very overweight though he hardly eats any sweets etc as he is allergic to many things.he eats i would say 95%healthy but his problem is portion control because of the medication he is always on he always has an apetite and feels hungry,e.g. he is often on prednison and daily is on sinular tablets and viannie forte and salbutamol in spray form.he has to really do something about it as he has two heart failures as well as cronic astzhma and problems with his kindneys.among other things.he likes to exercise but can not do it for long periods at a time for health reasons.
my 5 year old is under weight for his age and height which we thing is due to his whole in the heart, unlike my older son he doesnt eat that healthy and eats lots of biscuits and stuff which my husband always buys.unlike my older son he has to be persuaded to exercise.
my youngest son looks is like my first son and is on the big size though not overweight that is also due to the prednison, pulmacort, budi air salbutamol etc whenever he is on then.he is like every two year old very active and has a moere realistic eating patterns about 80% healthy.as i said my older son can not eat chocolate or brought biscuits, cakes etc and as i dont always have the time to make them he doesnt often have things like that .when his brother has biscuits etc he tends to have a banana milkshake(homemade no added sugar etc)or almonds and sultanas.i have to make everything from scratch, bread etc.as he is allergic to e additive, egg(goes into anerlethic shock even if there is a trace in it)peanuts etc.being very overweight myself(by the way my tracker is wrong that is the number of lbs i weigh not kg as stated but i dont know how to change it i am 210.5 lbs)i need to set a better exsample my self which is not always easy especially when one of the kids are ill as i am an emotional eater .sorry for writting a book lol.
