People NEED a certain amount of fat in their diet, in part to help with bowel issues, and in part to help with certain vitamins to be properly absorbed/utilized. I always ate a very low fat diet, ate a lot of fruit/veges (NOT covered in dressings etc.) and ate a little lean meat every day. Guess what??? It didn't stop me having a very high cholesterol and it didn't stop me being overweight. I also didn't eat very much junk .... never have. Fats from nuts, avocado, oily fish (salmon, sardines and herrings are examples) Olive Oil and Rice Bran Oil are great ones to go for.

You smoke and drink .... I don't and didn't. My eliminating those two things you will do your body far more of a favour.

When it was discovered I had cholesterol issues, I was in my mid 40's and about 30-40lb overweight, and I continued to gain very slowly. Altho' most of the lipids were quite high, my HDL (good one) was very low. I could never understand why the weight-gain because my average calorie consumption was 1650-1850 cal's daily. It wasn't until I was referred to a Registered Dietitian, that she twigged straight away what my problem was. What sped things up was I had been weighing all my food for increased accuracy and entering it all into the Nutrition Tracker. I took some printouts for her to peruse. Once she identified the problem, she was able to set me on a course and I haven't looked back. It included increasing my fats, in part by adding Omega 3 Fish Oil (prescribed) and in part by eating more nuts/avocado and adding a little bit of oil to some foods.

It wasn't until I had lost a fair bit of weight that my cholesterol normalized.

My triglycerides are almost 300. Total Cholesterol at 194. I'm 40lbs over weight. 43 years old. Smoke. Drink. Don't exercise. And have been doing whatever I want for many years.

So, here I am. I have to change or I'm not going to live a long time. My health overall, feels really crappy.

I don't think I have genetic cholesterol. I had my DNA done and had Promethease look at it, and there's really no markers for cholesterol problems.

I tried to convince my doc that if I went all no fat / vegetarian - and did all the things, we could see what it looks like in a month. She said no.. I need to do all that AND take meds. I need to go pick those up tomorrow.

I'm trying to change everything. My kids hate dinner LOL (that's not new).

One of my oldest daughters today, told me something when we were chatting about being healthier. She said, it's like a painting mom, little strokes and it'll all come together. Then she told me I was beautiful! :D Great kid! I'm a lucky mom.
