I just write down what I do. On the days that I run, I keep track of the mileage because that is how I think about it. But I don't run every day. On days that I do a dance class or an exercise video or strength training, I keep track of minutes. Also, I track minutes, not miles on a treadmill or elliptical because I don't think the miles really compare to running miles. So, I don't have one overall number at the end of the week, but I find that I can look back over the week just fine and see if I have a reasonable amount of exercise and reasonable mix. I do keep track of whether my running is improving over time by occasionally trying to increase my longest run of the week, or occasionally timing one of my usual runs. But I like to just relax and run most of the time, I don't like to keep track of time and pace every day.

I know this conversation is two weeks old but thought I'd chime in case somebody finds a different point of view useful or another somebody has a suggestion for me.

I've been tracking calories, nutrition, and to a lesser extent, exercise for about three years now. I've never had my food diary and main exercise log in the same app. I've tried to combine them but have never really been satisfied with the result.

Anyhow, I keep track of both time and distance. An increase in either one is counted as progress. I understand the difficulty with keeping track of calories burned exercising but it doesn't trouble me much because I've never trusted that number anyway. In fact, I don't even keep track of exercise calories burned.

If this post troubles you, let it roll off your shoulders like water off ducks back.

Thank you again! It is great to hear how others find shortcuts. It keeps me motivated. This past week I wrote out what I was going to do everyday - but I didn't think to put it into SP and then adjust. Off for my 3 mile hike around the lake before it gets too hot.

It's frustrating that the app doesn't easily allow you to add your own. What I have done is save it as a favorite. Then, you can add from your phone and adjust.

Another option, which is what I do most regularly is add my planned fitness for the week from the desktop site. Typically, I enter on Sunday. I usually plan outdoor walks or runs 3 days a week. Once I complete and know my exact distance, time and calories, I can easily adjust on my phone or the desktop site.

Thanks, that would work. I would still have to use the website, not the phone app. But no biggy. I am writing it down in my date book anyway and then I can update SP.

What I do is enter my outdoor walks and runs by clicking on the blue "enter your own fitness" link right under the blue "search" button. I enter the type (walk, run, or race name) and distance in the custom name and add the time and calories from my Garmin. You could use the data from your tracking app.

I use Map my Walk so the information is most accurate because it takes into account the changes in elevation. I just can't figure out the best way to enter it into SP. I choose the minutes/mile with minutes walked to get closest to calories burned according to Map My Walk. SP is usually under the calories because of the terrain I walk. I will have to look at entering miles again.

How accurate is your app?
Also, how are you entering in your fitness? When I search walk and hit the search button, the search results come up with quite a few results between 13 and 30 minute miles. There are also a variety of paces per km in that same range. Would using a different entry get you closer? When I search running I get from 6 to 13 minute miles.

Finally, which is more important to you? If you are more focused on your calories here, make that accurate and sync to something like MapMyRun for distance information over the long term.

-google first. ask questions later.

When I try to do both in SP it tracks the exercise twice in the exercise tracker. The miles, I can't track through the app just on the computer. I will have to look at it again.

I do both time and distance in the Charity Miles app - it is very motivating because I want to try and log the miles while I am walking to benefit fed America

Tracking the combination of both will be a better idea. You can make a goal of walking 3 miles in a certain amount of time and track it.

I walk and run. When I do one of those outside, I use a GPS tracker that has a heart rate monitor and calorie tracker. I track these workouts by time and calories in the SP fitness tracker.

I note the total miles in the activity name. That is done only to help me keep track of distances for a virtual miles event I participate in.

Hmmm.... I do both for brisk walking (I no longer run, as that caused me to overeat during the evening and eventually put weight back on).

Sometimes, depending on my pace, I may do 5 miles in 100 minutes and other times I do 6 miles in 100 minutes or 5 miles in 86 minutes.

Be caring, patient, gentle, compassionate and loving whenever possible, and never forget to extend those qualities to yourself.

Only you know which is more important to you.

I select the proper mph and enter the minutes.

Which is better? If I track minutes - the calories are lower than what my app says. But if I track miles - it doesn't give me the right amount of time. So is it more important to track how long - or how far?
