Getting fit at any age is important! I am 82 and exercise 5 x per week and try to walk 2 miles per day. I have a Fitbit which helps.

I’m a massage therapist, so my job has a certain level of activity.
I like to blast music and dance, and I walk and hike.
I’m pushing myself into the gym, and I do have resistance bands and a hula hoop for my lazy days.

I do take one complete day off, 18 hours, with no requirements.
Aaaand.....I see I’ve already answered.
I’m not really so long winded, honest.

I really like SparkPeople and appreciate its positive messages and the concept of setting and achieving small goals and just getting moving, baby steps.

I use another app to track my steps and calories and am bothered by something someone said there. Didn't even realize the app had a community with message boards until I found it today to ask whether the tracker/calorie counter takes BMR into account. (It's a question I have for most of these step counters; let's say your BMR is 1,600. If the app tells you you burned 500 calories exercising, is that on top of your BMR?)

Apparently that app is meant to track only "deliberate" exercise that you enter manually, and someone there told me to ignore the step counter and that walking for daily activities, i.e., that doesn't significantly raise your heart rate, doesn't really count! They made a deflating comment about the effects of walking for daily activities, which made me appreciate this community and program all the more.

Sure, a hard workout will burn more calories faster and get you more aerobically fit, but it's not the only way to burn calories. Moving more, however you do it, will burn more calories than sitting all day.

I'm just starting my journey here and am happy to go kind of slow for now, rather than risking injury by overdoing it. I'm so inspired by the stories I've seen here, like the one about the woman whose first goal was simply walking to the mailbox and who later wound up running in races.

That's why SparkPeople is so engaging, supportive and motivating. People here really are getting fitter and healthier, physically and in their broader lives.

What I do for mental fitness:
Read a book weekly that is non fiction and in a field I struggle to grasp
Play Timeline, a history based card game
Argue with my friends, convivially.

What I do for physical fitness:
My job is considered moderate exercise
Dance around the house
House work
Walking and hiking on a regular basis
Training for a major hike. Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon
Dance to live music

What I do for emotional fitness:
Meditation
Qi gong (sure Qi gong counts as exercise or flexibility, but I do it to settle and center myself)
Keep in touch with family and friends
Do all my venting in solace
Avoid ageism on both ends

I think if you read the original post you'll discover the poster wanted to know "what" people over fifty were doing to stay active both mentally and physically, but the wording could use a little work. (Plus it looks like he's done nothing with SparkPeople since he posted that last year?)

I have an active job, plus I like to hula hoop dance, hike and generally wander around.
My sweetie is In his late 60s and wants to hike Rim to Rim again. Did it two years ago, and wants this year as it’s the Grand Canyon’s 100th.

I'm 63 and I did 2.5 miles this morning and 3 sets of strength training with my 10-pound medicine ball. I do step, walk my dog a mile every morning and night and ride my bike a couple of times of week for 16-19 miles.

Be proud that your health is strong enough to be fit and active. There millions of disabled - young and old - that dream of being fit and active. And as a person ages, that chance diminishes.... Count your blessings, and never be complacent about, or take for granted, your ability to be fit and active.

Speaking of condescending? Did you even read the OP? He just wants to know what it is we do to keep active, both mentally and physically. BTW, the reason it's fifty (and not just some arbitrary number) is the stats. If you're over fifty, you've most likely already lived longer than you're going to live. Sorry, you don't like being lumped in with all us old farts, but the site is all about getting 'everybody' into better shape, no matter the age... and I was always taught there aren't any dumb questions, but there are dumb answers. Guess that's a little old fashioned though?

I clicked on this topic because of the very condescending question. Still active over 50? Are you kidding?

I haven't read all the responses here, but even so, I'm tired of everyone lumping age 50 into the same category with age 80 or 90. The demographics are always "age 50-plus" which means that once you're 50, you are considered in the same age category as your parents in their 80s.

Seriously? At age 56 I am just as close in age to a 26-year-old as to an 86-year-old. So yes, to answer the question, of course I'm still "active."

I run 15-20 miles per week (at a 9-10 minute/mile pace.) I strength train 2-3 days a week and I have muscles. I'm not an frail old woman yet, not even close.

Sorry, but what a dumb question.

Gosh. When I was in my 50's, I was more active and in better shape than any other time in my life! I am 65 now and I still do wheelies on my Schwinn Stingray! LOL LOL

Hi All,

Maisie123, I'm 58 and doing something very similar to you. I rise at 8.00am, have breakfast, take my thryroid meds and the dog has his insulin. I have two dogs so we all then go for a long walk (40 mins) to the park and then back home. Once in, the dogs happily fall asleep but no sleep for me. I then either do some gentle weight training or I do some floor work for about 30 mins. To finish, I do 20 mins of yoga before bed and I am sleeping like a baby. I do this every day and I feel marvellous. emoticon

@RIBBIE223, Resistance bands are a good place to start, you can use them anywhere, they're cheap, and you can get a good workout. If you wanna graduate to old Superman, you can always go on to pumping iron later. I wouldn't recommend it as I just had two hernias fixed in February and it hurt like hell. They came from a lifetime of lifting too much, including free weights. I attribute the messed up shoulders to bench press and pulldowns and the hernias from everything in general. With bands, you can start slow and easy and work up to serious resistance if that's your goal or just do what I do and go with regular resistance training for improved fitness and quality of life.

Just like anything else, you can spend a little or spend a lot. I don't even know the names of ours, but we have several sets picked up online. Here is a pretty complete set on Amazon picked randomly that has a bunch of high ratings and very few low ratings. Good luck and let us know what you do.

I’m 61 and still active. I do the Leslie Sansone walking program and have an exercise bike and a rowing machine. I do light weights and walk my two dogs everyday. I’m learning Spanish and am back to reading a book a week Loving the age.

I'm 71 and have been walking since I decided to become healthy. Now trying to figure out strength trading. I'm away from home for about four more months. Anyone have how to start strength training? Videos that are really for a beginniner at 71.

I am 74 and I am more active than I was when I was working
I deal with both spinal stenosis and bone on bone on my knees I still do water workout,, water aerobics, water walking and ST. I use my recumbent stationary bike I also am still very active gardening and going out and taking photographs of birds flowers and other interesting things
I'm not able to move as much as I would like so I do a lot of stretching to stay mobile. I do need to sit down and rest more frequently when I'm out doing my gardening

I am 72 years of age and I work out 6 days a week. I do strength training 3 days a week with my six days of cardio. I also crochet, take a foreign language class 3 days a week, and I help teach English 4 days a week.

Tip to reduce weight: First turn your head to the right and then turn it to the left. Repeat this exercise every time you are offered something to eat.

Since I'm early-retired, I have more time, so I'm more active. I've found Meetup.com useful for social activities. Thanks to my back problems :P I regularly go to the gym for water exercise classes. I will be 59 next month. I started doing yoga on a regular basis in 2015. I lost almost 100 pounds and have kept all but five pounds of it off, which I am currently working on taking off. I can honestly say I am probably more fit and flexible than I have been in a very long time.
I strongly recommend yoga for anyone who doesn't like exercise or is just beginning. I still work full time in a very physical job.
It is doable and might I say I am loving 81 year olds that still exercise regularly. That's where I want to be when I grow up! emoticon

70 here and I do exercise very much since nearly died this past year and got over sepsis.....almost normal.

I am over 50 and still very active. Like an earlier post, I have more soreness than in previous decades but that doesn't slow me down or stop me. Just have to be more body aware.

I turned 55 in April. At this point, I am as active as I was in my late 30s, which is the age at which I was fittest. I'm certainly thinner, fitter, and more active now than I was even two years ago, and I am determined to tone up MORE than I ever was previously. Now if I could just iron the wrinkles out of my face...!

I do about an hour of exercise daily, do housework for my still working DW, all the yard work and shoveling and whatever needs to be done. Those things tend to hurt a little more than they used to, but I'm still at it and probably more active now than I was prior to fifty. Now, I also do some of those things you mentioned, but they sure don't involve much "activity". I haven't been fifty for over twenty years. I have a deal with God from Genesis 6:3 where he told me I can live till I'm a hundred and twenty, so I've gotta' stay in shape for the next fifty years or so.
