Let's see - went through it at age 50 - had perimenopause for a few years before that and now I'm 62 and STILL have symptoms. I don't really get hot flashes to the point of sweats - I had those for a while but once in a while I do get a hot flash. The worst part for me is I haven't slept for the better part of 12 years. I have tried EVERYTHING. I have taken melatonin, benadryl, wine, no wine, no caffeine except my one cup in the morning, and no chocolate or anything else with caffeine. Still no luck. I have allergies so I usually take benadryl anyways because my sinuses drip at night and I feel like I'm going to choke. I don't wish this on my worst enemy. I have found that once in a while if I'm really really active, like when we go traveling and I'm walking almost 10 miles a day and don't stop from morning to night....only then will I actually go to sleep fairly easily. I KNOW this is effecting my weight loss but there is literally nothing I can do about it. Like I said, I've been at it for years and nothing has helped. Sleepless in South Florida!!
I am on a quest out to figure out HOW this 45 lbs appeared! It seems like I have not changed my eating or exercise, but my body has changed how it processes things - I assume it is hormonal but I have few clues as to how to get a grip on stopping and reversing it. I am simply tired of chasing all the different diets, I am ready for some common-sense. What have some of you done and what really works?

Fun little fact: my doc said I will go to my grave enjoying hot flashes. Cramps monthly from age 12 to around 54, hot flashes beginning around 47 until death do we part. Sometimes it is FUN being female!! Lol!
I turn 57 next week and have never had a hot flash. Not once! I don't know how I got so lucky, but (knock on wood) so far, so good. I actually have more energy than ever because with fewer responsibilities - children grown, not working right now - I have more time to go to the gym, run in the park, plan and eat healthy meals. I'm actually in better shape now than I was ten years ago when I was working full time, had more stress and less time to work out.
Of course everyone's life isn't on the same course, and we sometimes have even MORE responsibilities and stress in our 50s. So I'll enjoy it while I can knowing that new challenges will surely be coming my way.
BTW, I love not having PMS any more. It was the worst in my late 30s-late 40s, at least two miserable weeks every month when I was swollen, bloated and irritable. I don't miss that at all! Nor the erratic cycles that kept me guessing for a few years before I finally hit menopause for good. Glad that's over and done and things have settled down.

How are your sugar numbers? Before my hysterectomy, I was on a shot to bring on menopause and stop my debilitating periods. I had hot flashes, mood issues, brain fog and flushing. After I got my sugars back under control, I stopped having the hot flashes. HORMONES SUCK. I am beginning menopause and feel slow witted and angry. I also sometimes feel dumb. BUT I do not have hot flashes. FOR THIS I AM grateful.
I am 56 and have been in menopause for about a year. I guess I'm lucky: the perimenopausal stage for me was brief and uneventful: my periods started becoming more irregular and less frequent until they finally stopped altogether. I actually LOST weight during that period (70 or so lbs.) and have kept it off without much difficulty I had no hot flashes, but emotionally was a basket case! And my libido is completely gone, which I find intensely distressing.
The key for me was cutting out ALL sugar, refined starches, and alcohol; restricting fat, increasing my protein and fiber, and embarking on an exercise campaign. Diet really is important, both WHAT you eat as well as how MUCH. And exercise helps burn calories, tones you up, and makes you feel and look good.

This old thread is so important for others to find when searching! I didn't gain weight but my fat moved from my rear and thighs to my middle. Blubbery belly, skinny legs now. The first thing I noticed was my pants getting snug at the waist and then a muffin top appearing.
That muffin top is my biggest challenge. It has been now for eight years.

went thru menopause at 52. only lasted 4 months,but 30 lbs. came on with it. my main problem was hot flashes. suffered but no meds. to help.all natural. my body just doesn't look the same anymore,still struggling...……..
I’ve been in menopause for a year now. Coincidence but that’s exactly when I started my healthy lifestyle plan. Harder to lose the weight but not impossible at all. Belly fat. I’ve lost 30 lbs during menopause. Strength training is important during this phase of our lives as we start losing muscle mass. Staying hydrated and also doing 25 to 30 minutes of cardio is helping me. The toughest thing about menopause has been exhaustion. Not just tired but completely exhausted. My body feels weighted down with cement. I force myself to exercise.
I may be a little late to this discussion but I am through with it! I've been heavy all my life and now that I am a type 2 diabetic I am taking better care of my self. I started my journey last January and have lost 50 pounds by watching my blood sugar, my carbs, and exercising. I did really well this summer, going to the gym every morning and doing water exercise but since I've come back to work (lunch lady) my weight is from 204-210 and has been since August 1st. I am starting back at the gym today as soon as I get off work. It has been a slow process but I have done it and y'all can too!
I am glad I am done with the insane phase that was the worst even though 30# have magically reappeared after losing 95# and keeping it off for 7 years. Now I have sporadic periods. I hope each month that goes by will be a month without and I make it to that year mark.
I too struggle with the gains especially the mid-section. I bought a new scale that gives body fat%; muscle %; water and bone % also. So far I don't like the body fat % reading. lol
I am currently trying to find the perfect plan for me to help work off what I gained and maintain as much muscle in the process. What worked in the past no longer seems like it applies with the hormone changes. October is a new month and I have tweaked my plan yet again, increased ST and decreasing Cardio a bit, increasing protein and decreasing carbs some more. We will see and continue to try, I agree a little progress is better than no progress.

It also took me several years to go through it. The thing is, even though it's harder to lose weight-- "hard" does not equal "impossible". For me, it meant I needed to keep an eye on what/ how much I was eating. I tracked everything I ate and drank. I also lowered my expectations and didn't allow a disappointing weigh-in to derail me. I remember one week where I did everything absolutely perfect, and lost a whopping 1/10th pound instead of the 2 pounds I was thinking I'd lose. I just kept going. Every little bit adds up, and eventually I hit maintenance.
For most of us, it's practically impossible to out-exercise eating too much. So jmo but the Nutrition Tracker is a fabulous tool.

took me 4 years to go thru it. belly showed up that I never had. still working on getting rid of it and the hot flashes continue. I also gained 20 lbs. I still have 10 to lose. It does get better after you are done, but it is also harder to lose.

The reason I am here is menopause. I had the hot flashes, extreme fatigue, mood swings, and all the awfulness that is perimenopause but my weight was fine. My doctor told me that, when I finally do reach menopause, I can expect to gain about 20 pounds, mostly around the belly. I laughed at her. I have always maintained my weight at 125 or less and NOTHING was going to get in my way.
Well...menopause did. I gained 17 pounds. It seems like one minute I was 125, the next 142. I am at 139 now but it is so hard to lose weight! I also have an underactive thyroid but take meds for it and it seems to be OK. So I have about 14 more pounds to go. I want to go back to 125 lbs. I am 5'5" and that is just the right weight for me. I can live being 130 lbs.but I want to be firm and toned, not jiggly. I am just getting back into exercise after two fairly major injuries so this will be a battle. I am determined to not to let my lack of hormones determine my weight. Hate it. But glad the perimenopause phase is over. That was insane!

It is so awesome that women are now discussing peri/menopause so openly. I joined this amazing group on FB and am so glad I did. It's a private group and we talk about everything...and I mean everything. And I understand that a lot of what I am going through is normal (a few things had checked by dr just in case). The weight seems to be the worst for some of us to deal with. Sometimes it's a small gain but it seems to shift (if that makes sense). That's why I am back to tracking, getting in my steps, doing some weights...just want to move forward in a healthy way.
I first started going through menopause in my 20's. Went on HRT, then fertility pills and then after my 2nd child after I donated a kidney my hormone levels went normal. When I asked my doctor and the specialist, they couldn't explain it. I contacted kidney clinic to see if they had an answer. They had no explanation either. But now in my 50's and experiencing: the night sweats, the lack of sleep, hot flashes and the emotional stuff. Exercise definitely helps and watching my diet too. I am trying to cut back on caffeine. But some days need the caffeine to get through the day.

I am now 59 and am the same weight as always if not a little less. At this stage in life it is better to do less. Do more interval workouts and lift a little but make sure you get rest. Drink lots of water. Get rid of the processed foods, pop, etc. If it doesn't have a face or grown in the ground or on trees,don't eat it. I also avoid grains. Good fats and proteins and veggies. Intermittent fasting works well too. I have not had any hot flashes either. Message me if you have any questions.
I am...I forget when it started...maybe four years ago...while I am glad for no more period stuff, this is even little bit worse as it happens every single day since...hopefully, it won't last too long...it does makes it harder for me to lose weight easily...I just joined SP and hopefully, it would help me more including making more new friends who experience the very same thing...

Hi, I'm 51 and going through the same thing. For me it's been since I was in my mid 40.s. I've had 4 children and been able to stay clothes size 10-12. Since the menopause I've had trouble getting rid of the weight. I'm 12St 6lbs at the moment. Would be happy at 10St if I'm perfectly honest. That's why I joined sparkpeople. I turn 50 in less than two months. I seem to be gaining weight at a somewhat rapid pace. I haven't had a period in three months so I'm assuming I'm perimenopausal...anyone else going through this. My workouts are consistent...cardio about 3x a week, lift a couple of times - at the gym or on the trail 6x a week...off Fridays. It's the food, alcohol I guess. I'd like to hear from other women this age or going through this or think they are going through this. Seems like all the weight is going to my belly where it hasn't before. Have had some mysterious stomach issues, with nothing diagnosed but being normal and a colonoscopy because of my age next month.
