On Thanksgiving I watch football and don't go overboard on food! I think I may be cooking this year again so I am not going overboard with too much food I'll never eat. Just a small chicken or turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, broccoli and maybe a dessert that isn't pie!

I am not a fan of the whole "holiday season" and "traditions" thing --- it has always felt very forced to me, and I've got a whole slew of horrible memories of HAVING to spend time with people whom I deeply disliked just because they shared some random DNA with me.

As an adult, I stepped away from most of the "traditional" holidays, and instead chose to have celebrations and meals with my loved ones (blood and otherwise) on such auspicious occasions as "random Tuesday" or "first snow of the season".

Our close clan members do enjoy getting together whenever we can, and it usually involves a meal, but I can't remember the last time that it was a "traditional" spread. We're more likely to do a mess of grilled steaks (elk / moose / deer), or baked trout, or a pile of scallops --- and with the wide variety of dietary restrictions in the family (allergies, health concerns, and choices such as keto and gluten-free) we all chip in a bunch of dishes so that everyone will have something that they enjoy. My in-laws do prefer to have big semi-formal family dinners on the traditional holidays, but we skip those and join in on the informal random ones instead.

I do absolutely adore roasted turkey and stuffing and a variety of roasted veggies and salads and breads and desserts - and I make that sort of meal every time I come across a free-range never-frozen turkey at my local grocer (they get them in every few months). Sometimes we invite others to share it, other times we have lots of leftovers - for us, it's a favourite meal and no longer associated with a "holiday".

Some of my favourite meals that happened to fall on the Thanksgiving weekend were pig roasts / picnic / potluck meals that we had with a bunch of family and friends as the seasonal close-up at a campground that we used to stay in. There would be 40-100 people, all outside, no decorations or formality or "tradition" --- just lots of laughter and fun.

Honestly - if you would prefer to go to the beach and grill some salmon and just spend the time enjoying the company of your loved ones in a place that brings you joy --- why not do it? Especially for "Thanksgiving" it seems to me that we should each try to spend the day with the people and activities that truly nourish us and that we really ARE thankful for, and not force ourselves to endure traditions that were created by and for others.

Sir Terry Pratchett: "Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

The beach trip sounds nice.

I do like Thanksgiving. So I don't mind cooking and eating dinner with my family.

My husband and I bowed out of family dinners years ago for many reasons.
It's our day, we will smoke a turkey breast, (along with other meat to freeze), steam up multiple veg and pop a nice wine.
We may catch a movie, will hike or bike, and if a football is good, we will watch a bit

There is more to my holiday challenges than I mentioned and won't be mentioning here but thank you. Mostly, no one, even my close friends and family, would ever know how hard it is for me because I grin and bear it. I run a 5k on January 1 which signals a new year and the end of 5-6 weeks of hardship.

" What would you rather be doing on Thanksgiving?"
I am content with Thanksgiving being a special day, with special foods and guests.
If I would rather be doing something else, I would do it some other day!

I’m far from family, and can’t take Wednesday off to travel. So, phone calls will have to do.
My adult kiddo chose to work that day (amazon warehouse), my clients are all celebrating, so I have the day off.

I’m thinking a hike if the weather obliges, and if it’s less obliging, at least a drive.
I’ll make a fancier meal on Friday, planning leftovers and planning on housemates eating some.

I will make challah on Thanksgiving for shabbat on Friday. I love a slow rise.

For Friday, greens, a sweet potato, apple and cranberry dish. Baked tofu, mushroom gravy and dressing/stuffing. I will make cranberry Serrano sauce because I love it and eat it for weeks. I’ll macerate some broccoli slaw mix for a tart salad.
I haven’t decided on dessert. I’m tempted to just get some ice cream or a pie.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

Hi Meghan, thanks for replying. I'm sorry you hate the holiday season and sorry you don't have an immediate family to celebrate with.
emoticon
I can somewhat understand. I had a husband, but I didn't have a child for fifteen years after getting married. I was 36 when I had her. All my siblings had children and everyone else I knew had children and I felt so empty and left out for many years.

Having a child has been a real blessing, but it has not been easy. My daughter has some physical and mental problems (major depression & anxiety disorders). She's not independent yet and has only just gone to work after a three year gap due to a breakdown. When you see married couples with children, they may be struggling with heavy burdens.

I have a single Spark friend who has kids, but they spend Thanksgiving with their in-laws so she is alone on the holiday. She has a meal for herself and watches football. Sometimes she and a friend get together.

I hope the day is a good one for you and turns out better than you think.

Yeah, I have extended family but I am single without children. I wish I was able to celebrate with my own child and immediate family. I truly hate the holiday season because of this; I don't even bother decorating.

Rather than a typical Thanksgiving, I would like to go to the beach and stay in an oceanfront cottage, grill a big salmon fillet outside and serve it with broccoli and garlic bread and forego the traditional turkey and sides that we usually have.

Anyone else have something they'd rather do, or do differently, on Thanksgiving?
