I get strange looks and even weirder questions, but when I go to coffee with my friends and we are at a breakfast restaurant, I look at the salad menu and order , usually, a taco salad without the shell, and no dressing. I get the salsa and sour cream, they are better for me than the dressing. Everyone else is getting bacon and eggs, and toast. It takes me twice as long to eat a salad as it would to eat a traditional breakfast and it is better for me.

I think this *kind of* applies...When I was in college the power window on my older car went out. My dad tried to give me money to fix it, but I realized that I couldn't use the "drive thru" if the window was broken, so I left it. No Freshman 15 for me! That created a habit that has stuck with me to this day.

While filling up my car I'll stand on my tiptoes and bounce. No that the weather is cold people think I'm just trying to stay warm. LOL I'll stand on my tiptoes for about 5-10 seconds and then back flat footed for 5-10, etc while standing in lines.
At work I'll "dance" in my chair to music.

I actually have another one. I know that 2 laps of inner corridor of most of the floors at my work equals a 1/4 mile. I figured that out one day earlier this year when I arrived early due to allowing extra time for the drive due to snow.
Not terribly odd, but my fitbit prompts me to walk so many steps every hour. I try to at least double every hour's mandatory steps as well as taking a longer walk daily. I could be very sedentary curled up with a book, so this keeps me mindful of movement. And I park at the farthest parking spot in any parking lot. And drink a lot of water when I feel hungry. Nothing real odd, but it's all the little stuff that adds up. Down more than 90 pounds over the last few years.
This may not work out in your workplace, but it can in other places. Dance. I can usually easily "call up" Boogie Wonderland or September, or something like that in my head (if not on my phone,) and just dance instead of standing still while I'm doing other tasks. Sometimes that only involves engaging my core and stepping around, sometimes I can do The Twist, sometimes I can do something like The Hustle, and so forth, depending on the situation. It's fun, and really seems to help brighten my mood, too.

Many of my co-workers have to drive into work. I'm lucky. I can walk. So, when someone asks me how long it takes to walk and I say,"an hour". they are shocked and say,"isn't that a long walk?" not for me. why is walking for an hour worse than being stuck in traffic in an hour long commute ?
Like you, I prefer to walk whenever possible. If it's a long distance, I'll take a bus, subway or uber. Driving in the city makes no sense when there isn't any parking or a parking garage is $25-$50 for a day.
I try not to drive to anything within reasonable walking distance, unless I need to car to carry something/someone. My boys love walking to the store, post office, etc. with me - probably because they can usually talk me into stopping at the playground!
We lived in the center of the city without a car at all for 6 years before my boys were born - so we walked or took the bus most everywhere. (We used cabs or a car share - there was a Zip car lot at the CVS around the corner - when that didn't work. But walking was usually both easy and, of course, cheap.) I got used to just walking most places, and have tried to keep it up as much as possible, despite moving to a less-urban area of the same city, and getting two cars after my sons were born.
Not really that odd, but sometimes it seems like not driving everywhere is odd by American standards!
When I'm stuck in an airport waiting for a flight, I pace (walk) around the terminal to kill time and get in some extra steps. Since I know I'm going to be stuck sitting in a plane for a few hours, I try not to sit while waiting. I walk around even if it means I'm pacing.
And well, when I'm stuck in a line, I'll do calf raises. Gotta see why that line isn't moving. LOL
When I first *really* started this Journey, a dietician suggested to mentally envision all those work treats as "nice colorful plastic decorations"...why would I want to eat that??! LOL--it worked! This thread has made me realize I need to recycle that mental image to some of "those foods" I need to stay away from here at home, and defeat these last 8 lbs forever! patti

Interesting stuff.:) I have started walking by the candy dishes on my co-workers desks, including the pile of the Reese's PB Cups and telling myself YUCK!!!!! I have been consuming way too much of that garbage lately.
My balance is terrible (nothing medically wrong - I've always been this way). I'm going to try that for short periods to see if it helps. My exercise instructor is a sweetie; for balancing moves that she sees me struggling with she'll quietly give me an alternate move or a modification so I don't tip over.
Apparently I have become a "flamingo" cook --- standing on one leg with the other foot against my thigh, and alternating every 2 or 3 minutes...
I started doing this deliberately a few years ago when I was making a new-to-me lemon curd recipe that required continuous whisking for 8 minutes --- and it seemed like a good time to work on my balance. It felt good, made the time seem to go faster, and prompted better posture along with the better balance, so I started doing the same thing any time I was standing at the stove.
I hadn't intended it, but it has now become such a habit that I am pretty much always "doing the flamingo" whenever I am standing doing a kitchen chore (prepping, stirring, washing dishes...) and don't even realize it until someone points it out.
It is a bit odd - but my posture and balance are better

In your journey to a healthier you, have you developed any unusual habits to try and stay healthy? I am not talking the standard exercise for whatever amount of time or the consumption of more fruits and vegetables and healthy fats. I am talking souped up habits but still healthy? What caused you to do it?
My example is that I jog in place at the elevator at work if I am the only one riding it. (I have bad osteoarthritis so taking the stairs too much causes pain.) I started doing this when I accepted a new position at my company back in March which required me to commute to the office; I'd been telecommuting prior. My new position is call center and I am basically strapped to my phone unless I am on break. If I even go to the restroom off break, it works against me so I try be as active as possible while breaking and hence the weirdness in the elevator, lol.
