Melatonin helps me get to sleep - takes 15-20 minutes. (but I still wind up waking up in the middle of the night - maybe i should try the time released version.)

Ahhh - be careful which antihistamine you choose, since some folks can have an opposite reaction (benadryl - better than any energy drink out there for me!).

Personal antihistamine preference for sleepiness: Gravol (dimenhydrinate)

Non-drug: warm feet (either a hot-water bottle, or disposable hand-warmers held around the ankle where the blood flow is closest to the surface, which heats the blood and not just the feet)

Sir Terry Pratchett: "Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

"The Inuit Paradox" ( discovermagazine.com/2004/oct/inuit-
paradox
): "...there are no essential foods—only essential nutrients. And humans can get those nutrients from diverse and eye-opening sources. "

Sometimes when I can't sleep because my mind is too busy, I'll try meditating for a bit - 10 minutes or so or for however long I feel I need to calm the chatter. Perhaps look into simple breathing meditation where you count your breaths 1-in, 2-out, 3-in, 4-out, then start over with 1. When you notice your thoughts have wandered, it's easy to then draw yourself back to the silent count again.

Make your schedule consistent everyday. When it is time for you to be in bed sleeping, be in bed. Make sure that you're not using your bed for anything other than sleep (ie no phones, no books). Make your room as dark as possible (cover or turn clocks that light up away from you) and the right temperature. Try to make a bedtime ritual, like a bath and a cup of tea that you do every night before you get into bed. Whatever lets your mind wind down, do that.

You also want to figure out what works and what doesn't right before bed. Things like exercise can either tire you out and make you ready for bed or pump you up and make bed not an option, so figure out which camp you belong in and which one works best for you. Same goes for food and showering.

-google first. ask questions later.

most of the time, my insomnia keeps me from staying asleep. I wake up during the night, and cannot go back to sleep.

Chamomile tea helps sometimes. I also use sleep melts (an OTC sleep aid that dissolves on your tongue). There are several brands available. I've also use Somnapure. It's another OTC, all natural sleep aid.

I have always had trouble sleeping so I'm always looking for and trying new things to help me sleep. Passionflower tea usually helps but... About 3 months ago, I got this thing... and I know it probably seems stupid lol but it has REALLY helped me...

I usually plug my phone and play some "relaxing" music or.... gentle rain sound or... whatever. I love it.

Turn off your cell phone. I know how tied everyone is to their phone these days. So no reading IMs, FB feeds, etc. Disconnect from the phone as well the computer and television. Instead, try reading a book.

And avoid caffeine. It doesn't help.

I drink chamomile tea and read a book. I avoid the computer because the light has a stimulating effect. I get lots of exercise but not too close to bedtime because that can give you trouble falling asleep.

If you are on certain medications, melatonin might interfere with them, ask your doctor. Over the counter stuff is not safe for everyone.

I make sure to have my tablet and cell set to turn off blue light at 7pm. If you are on line too close to bedtime, the blue light has an adverse affect to sleep. I fall asleep...but I still wake up at least once!

I was advised by my Dr. Camomile tea or if not strong enough Melatonin which becomes less in the body as we age. It is natural in the body to help with sleep. Some kinds are time released & kick in when you take them as well as the middle of the night to keep you asleep. They are very cheap and you only need to take one. They are both natural & non addictive as well.
