Heroes and Cowards

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

I agree, mostly, I have MANY opportunities to be a coward every day. But I also think that we have more opportunities to be a hero than we realize. It might be a small gesture for us, but huge to someone else. Someone was my hero one day just by buying me a cup of coffee. I was mad, and upset, crying in my car over someone's hateful cruelty to me, in the Starbucks drive thru line, trying to pull myself together in time to pay for my coffee and go back home. I got there and the person in front of me had already paid for my coffee. It absolutely made my day and left a smile on my face, and a different kind of tear in my eye. That small act of kindness (for her) changed my whole attitude and outlook on my day and on life. I went from thinking that people were gross excuses for human beings, to seeing that ray of hope again. And every now and then, I pass it along, hoping that I can brighten someone else - and maybe, just maybe, they will pass it along, too.
