Is FitClick an alternative to SparkPeople?

Tuesday, June 08, 2021

Just took a look at the FitClick site. They are a competitor of SparkPeople. Nothing fancy, but maybe an alternative to SparkPeople, that will cease operating its website on 8/17. Fitclick seems to have a lot of the functionality of SparkPeople without all the bells and whistles.

As a side note, SparkPeople Inc., according to Chris Downie's sparkpage profile commentary, back in 2006 had an operating budget of $2M. Wonder what it is now? I read on their corporate site there are 17M members of SparkPeople. If only 15 million people paid $60 annual for the privilege of being a member of the sparkpeople community, that's a whopping $900M. Something tells me SparkPeople shutting down may not be $ driven, but maybe a change in strategic direction. Based on the SparkPeople 360 leadership team info on co-founders, and executive management, it seems like they have a credible, prestigious line up; they are postured to begin this new endeavor. Chris Downie has officially blogged that SparkPeople site is shutting down on 8/17; I believe this decision is final and not reversible, as sad as that is.

SparkAmerica may become the next big thing. More functionality will be available as time goes on. Chris Downey's blog gives future hope for a community platform and a wider net beyond what is being called "America." Technical infrastructure takes time to build, not to mention new international laws on privacy that need to be addressed and incorporated. For me, SparkAmerica will be a sit back, wait and see what develops before I will join, as I already know it will not have the functionality and the inclusive global community of SparkPeople that I am looking for, at least not now.

I will remain on SparkPeople until the very end on 8/17. SparkPeople has been such a great experience for me. With great appreciation, a big THANK YOU to all who made that possible. emoticon

I checked fitclick out and it's ok but I don't like that their site is not a secure site. Also it seems that their developers haven't been keeping up with it either based on their facebook page. I wanted to like it because it seems like a great alternative. I'm just wary of non-secure websites when it's password based.

Hi Vicki, I am still in shock, but feeling a bit better today. I sure enjoyed being on spark and having all the friends here, just loved it. I am glad I was scaling back my time on here though, for a while there I was on most of the day cheering everyone on, was too much. Now I am on maybe half an hour, never liked it when they added the community feed, many went there instead of the regular feed. Anyway, less time on spark so less of a shock for me now. I still loved my points and spinning the wheel, I will miss that and talking to buddies. Many Have gone to myfitnesspal. I have an account there, but just to add fitness and foods, never added friends. I just don't think I want to do what I did here again. I will wait and see what happens with spark America. I know it won't be the same. Have a good day Vicki emoticon

It has been a great experience for me too, and it has been helpful in my quest to lose weight. I've made some lovely friends and that is the cherry on top for me. I'm ready to make a go of it on my own though. I have been tracking everything since 2008 and these days I'm finding it quite tedious and it has always been time consuming. As I've said before, I have lost weight without a scale, without gadgets, without tracking food or exercise, so I feel that letting go of Spark at this time is the right thing for me. I won't be replacing Spark with another app or gadget.
    I FEEL SO FREE!!! emoticon
