Man.Food.Fire - Memorial Day Weekend Memories
Monday, May 31, 2021
First of all - DH is a very experienced BBQ King, having owned a BBQ restaurant and BBQing (is that a word?) for many years! He makes the most mouthwatering, tender, amazing ribs, brisket and chicken you've ever eaten in your life. Just want to put that out there!
Yesterday morning's weather was such an unusual 62 degrees for this time of year. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and the smoker was smoking with that familiar, sensational aroma of post oak and mesquite burning slowly.
We cooked breakfast outside in a cast iron skillet on the grill, and enjoyed eating on the patio. Miss Molly dog was in dog heaven because we were out there most of the day, and she loves being outside.
We enjoyed a couple of "fall off the bone" ribs and Texas Caviar (it's not really caviar) for lunch.
Late afternoon DH went out to check the embers and didn't feel any heat, so he cleaned out the pit and placed the embers in an old thin metal planter. He put the planter of cooled embers inside a box. Then placed the box on top of another large flat box that needed to be broken down.
At 5:00 I got a panicked phone call from my next door neighbor telling us there was a fire and her husband was over trying to put it out. DH and I raced outside and our neighbor had a little plastic Easter bucket with water, and had put the fire out. We were stunned! How could that have happened? Well, apparently there was still a log smoldering.
We gave our neighbors a care package with brisket, ribs, and all the "fixins" and they invited us over. Of course we said yes, and laughed about our neighbor being a "hero fireman!" Thank goodness it was a happy ending to a fun and beautiful day! Thank goodness for good neighbors! Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!!!
