My Brother Passed Away

Thursday, May 27, 2021

My 68 yo brother passed away yesterday after having surgery for his esophagus October 1, 2020, which was scarred from years of acid reflux & medication he took.
The surgery failed after a week and he had bleeding and went back for another surgery and they put in a feeding tube and a drain on the side of his throat, as he couldn't swallow. He was in ICU 4 times over the past 8 months and in rehab and the nursing home, and yesterday he was finally to return home and in 2 months he was to have another surgery to reconnect his stomach, but they found him dead in the bed in the morning, apparently from heart failure.
Thankfully, he had Medicare and insurance from the Coal Miners, so it was all covered,
He has a wife, who is 50 and a nurse and a 21 yo son.
He was barely able to walk across the hospital room with a walker, so I knew he was very weak. He also had been a smoker since his teen years, which I never started.

80 million Americans have Acid Reflux and most don't realize how damaging it can be over a long period of time. Of course, weight loss is one of the best things to do, but he only weighed 180#.

Google says: The nicotine from tobacco relaxes the valve between the esophagus and stomach (lower esophageal sphincter). This can allow stomach acid and juices, the chemicals that break down food in the stomach, to back up (reflux) into the esophagus, which causes heartburn.
