Bad News

Yesterday I received some unexpected news that will change my life in a big way. My teaching position will probably be eliminated, and because of the way my contract was written, I will not be reassigned elsewhere. I feel devastated and also betrayed. I cried for a while because I have been a loyal and devoted teacher for many years. It hurts to be pushed out.

This is a time to get my finances in order and check my budget. This is a time for me to be gentle with myself and realize that I have the full summer off! I'm going to have time to work with my grandkids and help my son and his family settle into their new home. I'll be focusing on my teaching skills and personal development of my sewing skills and writing a new resume. I'm 65, and maybe I'll continue teaching part-time.
Maybe it wasn't bad news after all! I have faith that everything will turn out okay.

I’m sorry you got this news. Others have mentioned substitute teaching already. You could also tutor students. Either would allow you to work when you want too and enjoy time off as well. Wishing you all the best on this new journey! emoticon

My husband was pretty much forced out of his job a year ago. So he retired early. Best thing that ever happened to him. Now we have so much time to do things together!
Same happened to me, like it happened to you, I was let go from my job, due to downsizing, 30 years ago. We decided I needed a break, so I've been on one ever since! So happy about that--- even though we had to make financial adjustments. All worked out.
I hope the same for you. Sorry for what happened to you though.
    Hang in there. emoticon

Don't leave out substitute teaching as an option - i have a friend that did that after losing her full time teaching job and she did quite well, plus you still have free time.

What your going through would be very hard . If you can , take your time to make any decisions . Try not to make any other big changes right now . You have not got to this point in your life , without facing disappointments and challenges , use the strength you learned from those time periods , for this time period . I hope all goes well for you , this summer . emoticon

So very sad to hear it. If it was because of age, you can (if you want) contest it.

Also, see if there is an opening for teacher substituting. Please keep us advised. It is devastating news, I know you are strong.

    Because I do care emoticon

You will be fine. So many times something that seems bad, turns out to be good. I had taken a job (many years ago) with the owner of a large construction company. He rolled out the red carpet for me. I was invited to all events he went to with management staff (true, I planned a lot of them) but also to his family events. I was "one of his girls" he used to tell me. Flowers on my birthday, and little cards saying how much he appreciated me and he and his wife were now able to spend a lot more time at their home in Hawaii. I was the first and only person he told that he was going to sell the company. He was also taking me with him to just do commercial property management and other investments. End of story? After 7 years of this (right before my birthday) he told our CFO (who was also his brother in law and was also leaving with him) that he could pick between me and his assistant (also our receptionist) on who to take with them. He didn't even tell me. I had to hear it from her. You can imagine my embarrassment, hurt, and betrayal. Now, the good thing that happened to me because of that. I stayed with the very large company that bought him out and got a $15,000.00 raise and added me to their ESOP plan. I now am looking at retirement soon, with another $200,000 retirement that I would never have had if that hadn't happened to me. I am still hurt and betrayed, because it hurts when someone or a company does that to you. In the end, it was so much better for me. So, take a deep breath, realize that companies don't value their employees any more. They will get rid of you as soon as they feel your too old or don't fit their mold anymore. Always put yourself first! emoticon

That is a very large blow especially as you devoted your summer last year preparing to be a remote teacher so that you could better work with your students. From reading your blogs I believe that you are resilient and will find other ways to use your talents. Well prepared tutors who love to teach are always needed and as you say, you will have more time to spend with your children and grandchildren.

I am so sorry to read your news. It is difficult to find yourself suddenly unemployed - it happened to me and for a short time I was resentful and VERY distressed, because I loved my job and was good at it. I thought it unlikely that I would find another job being over sixty years old. So I decided to embrace retirement even if it meant financial changes. Now I am so happy to be retired because each day I can choose what I would like to do with my time. I wish you happiness and joy for your future. xx emoticon
