Self-Care: Doesn't Have to Totally Be Focused on Me
Tuesday, May 11, 2021
Last eve Gwen and I walked-ran 2.5 miles. I was focused on going the right speed and distance for Gwen but it turned out to be a very fun and even good workout for me, too. Sometimes self-care can include compromise for others. It was so much fun to run with 10 year old Gwen, it filled my heart. She was delighted to be running. She runs at school, but not near this distance. It was her first distance run since we did the Mayfaire virtual 5K a year ago. At first she wanted to go faster. I told her if she still wanted to go faster at the half-way turn around point, we would change to run/walk :30/:30, but we started at run 15 seconds/walk 30 seconds. At the turnaround, Gwen didn't want to increase the run intervals, so we just stayed with it. Originally she said she wanted to do a 5 K, 3.1 miles, but at 2.5 miles we were near our car and she chose to end it. Even though we didn't do as much as she originally set out to do, I asked her how she felt about our ran, and she gave a perfect answer: "proud."
It was predicted to be 87 degrees, but it was 91! I wore a fuel belt with 2 bottles of water. She tried 2 different fuel belts in order to have her own water, but didn't fit/didn't work, so she drank the bottle on my left and I drank the bottle from my right side. That worked. It is too bad that she has to be to school so early that we just don't have time to run after daybreak (in cooler temps) and get her to school. But that's okay. Just one month of school left so I expect we can do morning runs soon.
Gwen decided she wants to run the Summer Sunrise Watermelon 5K series with me this year. She will be out of town on vacation for the second one, which is probably okay. She would not be eligible for an award anyway so she probably won't feel as much pressure. They do give finisher medals so that will be more than adequate. The smallest shirt will probably be too large, but she'll be proud of it and wear it anyway, Ii bet! So I am looking forward to her spending the night with me and running June 12th and August 14th. I hope to be healthy enough to run both those races, because I will only run if my body is saying "yes, go for it!"
Gwen and I plan to run again Wednesday evening. I suggested we do :15/:30 again and see if we can finish a 5K this time. We will see.
If I was just running by myself I probably would go a little faster, but my heart, my soul, benefits from sharing this experience with my granddaughter. I benefit physically and emotionally. I like being a good role model, too. It doesn't have to be 100% about me!!
