Common Ground #1

I'll post the scripts of some little Instagram videos I'm doing here.
Thought For The Day: I believe that the critical first step to finding Common Ground with people who believe vastly different things from you is to start by stripping away all the superficial things that we argue about on any given issue. Here’s are two examples.
I am a diehard liberal, getting more progressive with each passing year, and yet I can honestly say this:
~ I frequently don’t trust what I see on the news. I think nearly every avowed Conservative would agree with me on that.
~ I can say to my arch-conservative neighbor that I am tired of politicians being asked a direct question and dodging it endlessly. They would likely agree with me.
So. What do we do with this knowledge?
We can use it to help us build allies from adversaries. By finding those points of agreement with others, we validate their feelings, and that makes them more likely to be willing to carry on a civil discussion. And civil discussion is where we all must start. Next time let’s talk more about the news!
[EDIT: I'd like to reemphasize that these thoughts are JUST starting points. Talking to people who have been fed a diet of lies for years will take a lot of time, but it's essential work if we aren't willing to live in a failed democracy.]
