Hip Surgery and COVID

Monday, January 25, 2021

Hello, Sparkfriends. As usual, I've waited so long to blog that I can't begin to update on everything that's happened. It feels like a year's worth of things have happened in the past three months.

I had my hip replacement surgery on November 2nd and it went well. I was going up and down stairs with a walker four hours after the surgery! I did stay overnight at the surgical center since our drive home is more than two hours and I was supposed to stop and walk, which I didn't care to do in the dark. My recovery went fine and I actually was back leading worship and preaching after less than three weeks, and just using a cane.

Then, my husband got sick, and I followed suit the next day with the same symptoms. Yes, it turned out to be Covid. It was like a bad flu for us, with the addition of stomach upset and extreme fatigue. (And of course, in my case, the added fun of still being in recovery from major surgery.)

After about a week, we both lost our sense of taste and smell completely. Although this phase wasn't fun, I can recommend it as a weight-loss technique! It took me more than three weeks to feel close to normal, and longer for Rick. But we are extremely grateful it wasn't worse. We know several people who have been on ventilators in critical condition, and several others who have died. It seems that we hear of sad news nearly every week. We are unsure how Rick picked up the virus, since he wasn't going anywhere but work and the grocery store and always wore a mask. But, it happens.

My hip is getting stronger and less painful every week. I'm back to riding the stationary bike now and will soon try circuit training again. I will have to modify some exercises. Although we have 8 inches of snow on the ground and more falling, I have been reading seed catalogs and gardening magazines and planning for spring. I'm getting ready to order about a dozen David Austin roses for our new long rose border and arbor. So excited for that! Gardening is my joy and there's a reason I planned this surgery to fall in the non-gardening months!

There is more to tell but I will save it for another blog. Praying for health and peace for all of you.

Glad you are on the mend. I've been dreaming of Spring too (I'm in California, so no horrible weather, just cold) I love to garden too and just can't seem to do it in the cold, although I trimmed my roses last week.
    Take care

So sorry to hear you and your husband had covid but so very glad you both recovered! Great news that your recovery from hip surgery is going so well.
I love David Austin roses! I was lucky enough to see so many different types in France that they don't have here in the USA and they are spectacular. I hope we see some pics of the new roses that you order.
Take good care and keep on healing and getting better each day!

So glad to hear from you again. So sorry about the Covid. Yes, so many suffering and grieving.
Happy that the recovery is going well. Little by little, stronger and stronger.

I’m so thankful you and Rick have recovered from Covid. How terrible. I am so sorry you got sick with that nasty virus.
It sounds like your hip replacement surgery went very well, and your subsequent rehabilitation. I’m amazed at how quickly you were active afterwards. That is you!
Thank you for the update. I hope to see pics of your beautiful gardens this spring. Hang in there.
I bought a bunch of seeds and pots and dirt today. I’m getting ready to get ready!
