Why I don't sync my Fitbit

Confusing "Activity" with Cardio
"This is probably the most common mistake I see. We know how important it is to be active, and so we try to count every activity we do as "exercise" or cardio. That can be a big mistake for several reasons. While any activity is better than no activity, only those activities that meet the requirements for cardio activity really give us the health and fitness benefits we exercise in order to reap. Plus, tracking calories burned from every little thing you do is only misleading. You're only really burning "extra" calories when you're working pretty darn hard—not when you're simply walking leisurely through the mall or doing some light cleaning. Learn more about the differences between activity and exercise."

My Thoughts:
Because Fitbit automatically notices when you do things like walking (though I think it is possible to shut that feature off) I don't sync because I do not want to have casual activities skew the amount of calories burned. Similarly I personally don't track house cleaning...that doesn't get my heart rate up. I feel it is movement only. And I am not sedentary so movement alone is not exercise for me.

I do look at the Fitbit reports and manually enter exercise minutes so I can track DELIBERATE calories burned. For example: I never add my morning dog walk. That is incidental activity that I do daily whether or not I am trying to lose weight. If I take a second/afternoon dog walk I track that one because it is out of the ordinary and performed with much more intensity (speed, resistance/hills). For this reason I also tend to not begin tracking until my warm up is over and my heart rate has increased. Additionally I stop tracking once the stretching part of my cool-down begins (and heart rate lowers).

DELIBERATE / INTENTIONAL are the key words in my fitness regime. emoticon

Hope you get the kind of cardio you need today! :)

I take my deliberate calories from Fitbit and enter those into SparkPeople for calorie guidelines! Fitbit way overestimates how much I burn in a day otherwise.
