2020 Fall 5% Challenge

Usually with our 5% Challenges, there are several questions we answer, one a day, to prepare & set up our plan for success. I usually do it, sometimes a day or two late. This cycle I realized I read the questions, reflected on my answers but never did put my plan in writing. This morning I awoke knowing I really want to be successful this round. So my morning has been spent trying to create my plan. Here's what I have remembered about the first year in which I participated in the 5% Challenges, successfully eliminating 54 lbs.

The person who invited me to participate, who has had to step back for personal reasons, and I emailed back & forth because I had so many questions before I committed to it. At the time I was reading a book about changing lifestyle habits one at a time. I don't remember the title. The idea presented was to focus on one change until it is natural, then move to the next. Keep things simple, I guess, was the underlying theme. So this challenge I am keeping it simple.

My goal is to return to a nutritional diet. That means lots of veggies, some fruits, fewer carbs, less sugar. (Salt is not included since I don't even have salt in my apartment & I pay attention to the sodium level of prepared foods I eat.) Water is not a problem for me - I am actually around day 2119 of drinking 8 glasses a day (yes, I still track it on SP because my work schedule can get crazy and I don't stop to drink.) After using WW for a year and a half, I'm returning to tracking on SP. Why? Because WW with its low carb diet plan (they don't call it that but that's what it is) makes me feel like a failure if I go over the points because it was a carb-heavy day. Though I see where I've gone over in nutritional values on SP, I don't feel judged.

This doesn't mean I won't exercise - or move as I call it. Move seems less intimidating to me. My movement is a bit limited due to a heart issue & bad knee. So no floor moves for now.

The last piece, which is crucial for me to stay focused, is daily quiet time. Whether I'm sitting on my deck (though not for long since cold weather is fast approaching), on my sofa enjoying a sunrise (like today), meditation, prayer or cuddling with my new kitty Lucy. It helps my 70 year old brain to focus. (This may also help with motivation while working from home.)

There I've said it. This is my contract with me. I'm considering the posting of this blog as my signature.

    I read your blog. Way to plan and get motivated! I agree with you about WW. I too felt like a failure for going over my points and not only that, It's too skimpy. I always felt deprived. I never feel deprived with SP though I still do employ healthy swaps. Happy spotlight day! emoticon Laura

    I have done WW in the past but it stopped being helpful and more stressful. I usually do SP tracking but I decided to keep a small note book and pencil where I eat breakfast and just post what I ate the day before and put down what I plan to have today. Sometimes they are the same. I have done this tracking enough I know what the portion should look like.

    Yes, I believe that's the key to success. The "all or nothing" approach is hard to keep up.

    I am the Queen of Gradualism.
    When I decided to cut down on sugar. I actually measured what I put in my coffee and reduced it by 1/4 tsp every week. It took awhile but now I drink it black.
    I switched to plain Greek yogurt from my favorite sugared varieties by mixing the two and very gradually reducing the sugary one. That worked too.
    Even beginning to run some 30+ years ago began with 15 seconds at a time.

    Good luck to you. Gradual improvement is easier to maintain.
