My Rewarding Garden
Thursday, August 27, 2020
Today I had planned to arise early to pick and weed my vegetable garden before the humidity hit.
Well it didn't work out as I had planned, instead of picking through the produce at 7am I was not out until 10:30am, which meant by the time i was done it was almost 12:30pm.
I was drenched and dripping sweat by the time I had arrived back inside with my bag full of garden goodies, 3 pounds of green beans, 4 handfuls of cherry tomatoes, zucchini and squash. I did have a few tiny eggplants: I decided to pick a few as they hadn't grown in size and thought maybe I need to sacrifice a few so that the others have room to expand and grow.
I am unable to do a hard workout due to my goiter restricting my airway, however, my gardening is my exercise. It relaxes me, I enjoy it, I am stretching, bending and pulling on plants/weeds and my reward is a bountiful harvest. I have been freezing a large quantity of my portion of my garden for the winter as I am prepared for it to be crazy like it was in the spring and things will be hard to get so I am prepared to be more of a vegetarian this fall if need be. I say my portion as you see when I harvest I always divide my intake by 4 so that I can share my bounty with my neighbors and I advise them that they can freeze most of their portion for later use..
My rewards for having my garden has so many folds: It's quite a workout for me, it's a stress reliever, it provides healthy fuel my body (tonight i made a zucchini lasagna from a round zucchini I picked..it was so good as the pieces of zuke were huge well it was round like a child sized basketball) and I am able to share with my less fortunate neighbors (especially the elderly neighbor who is on a limited budget and this food could make a difference for her paying a utility bill or using that money to buy food. As you all know that 4 oz of uncooked protein can go a long ways with a plate full of vegetables.
But I will be honest there is only one reward that I am missing that would encourage me more to keep gardening (I do have a flower garden too that could use weeding and pruning, and some trees and bushes as well): if when I sweated, them little droplets of burnt fat would scream...Oh just once I would love to hear a drop scream like they were being murdered or even an occasional Wizard of Oz "I'm Melting" scenario as they tumbled down my face.
Yes I already imagine the sweat as little fat leaking out of my body and say to myself, "That is weight lost." but come on throw me a bone, let me hear one of them friggers scream as they fall to their death. That would make me want to do more garden work even when the humidity is at 90%)
I hope everyone has a great day and that you are staying safe!
