It's been so hot, so I haven't been getting on my stationary bike. And I have gained TWENTY FIVE pounds since the quarantine - not being able to get out to the JCC for water-walking 3x a week...I finally decided to take advantage of my long driveway out back, just to walk to and fro in the cool of the morning while it's still shady. I use my cane, just in case, and bring my cell phone, just in case - I haven't fallen, but the driveway is overgrown and I'm not all THAT coordinated. I figured, back driveway is good because I can stop and go inside whenever it gets to be too much, instead of trying to walk around the block and being overwhelmed. First time was 10 minutes. Bear in mind, I was requiring my legs to carry all my weight, unlike the bike which allowed me to sit and let the legs just pedal. And there was 25 more pounds to carry. The second day, I managed 11 minutes...the next 12...Just pushing it up, little by little. I was aiming for 15 today and actually put in SIXteen. And I do what I did while pedaling - I pray - for my husband and family in Peru, then for all who are related to us by blood, marriage, affection, or adoption...then for spiritual kids, then for all the churches I've visited...it helps to pass the time. Of course there are also the distractions of the work that has to be done in the yard, but mainly I pray as I walk.
Now, I've been to my internist a couple of months ago...and was referrred to a hand surgeon and then a neurologist - I have severe carpal tunnel syndrome. My blood pressure was what *I* considered high - 135-140 over 80+. I figured the weight has pushed it up. But yesterday when I went for a pre-surgery appointment with my internist, my BP was 128/78. I was AMAZED! And I can't help but think - it's because of the walking. It isn't much, but it's SOMETHING. So, I will continue!
MEANWHILE, my exercise buddy got herself a new bike, so she said she's going to start nagging me again. This is good too. And she gave me her old one, which is still in the back of my van, but I plan to put it in the livingroom so I can watch TV (Hulu or Netflix) while I pedal. She also got a little wading pool - 6 foot diameter, 29 inches deep - and she said we can water walk in her back yard. We're bringing back our AWESOME!

It is great that you are becoming more active, Shelley. I think one of the hardest things about the pandemic is being separated from distant family. We’re just not able to travel the way we normally do.

Good job on the walking! And it is great that you will be able to exercise in your friends pool.

Your life in Peru sounds exciting! I am glad you are making progress walking slowly. It helps to build the habit without getting overwhelming.
