I have seen this many times before today. This meme really struck me today for the following reason, many times in my life I was just short of reaching many of my goals for the simple fact that I didn't SET A GOAL!

When I became an adult I joined the U.S. Navy. I survived basic training and then went on to my "A" School. As a kid growing up I basically floated through life especially school. I was a C student. I didn't know how to apply myself.

My parents didn't graduate from high school. My dad left school in the 9th grade, I know mom quit school early on. Grandma sent her to live with her sister who was a teacher. Mom just felt like everyone made fun of her because she lived on a farm and was as dumb as a stump post. That's how she felt. She finally left her Aunt Ann's and walked back home to the farm 20 miles or so. We didn't get any help from them as far as studying went. My dad was a real wiz at math. I remember when things were slow at the shop, him working on crossword puzzles from the newspaper.

My mother went to Green Bay to live with her Aunt Mary while she went to cosmatology school. The only book I ever saw her reading was "through the looking glass" and that was not Alice in Wonderland, although her name was Alice.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the meme. I remember at the end of my "A" School the Chief in charge was giving us the class list of the highest achievers. I didn't realize there was a prize at the end of the rainbow!!!! The top five people got to pick their next duty station! Gee I was 6th on the list! Just that short of a possible goal if I had set a goal!

That is pretty much how my life went until I met Sparkpeople.com! This is where I learned how to set a goal and reach it! I remember a team co-leader walking us through setting goals. What she must have thought I cannot even imagine! She had to hold our hands (virtually) and even give us examples. We had assignments to do.

I had been losing weight right along but my long term goal before this little class was to get to 200 lbs. Then it became to stay as far below 200 lbs. as possible. Ah, but now I had the map to get there and stay there. I have been in maintenance since July 4th 2010.
I weighed 145.3 this morning. Yea me!!! Today I look in the mirror and think wow that really is me!

I have said it before and will always say thank you Chris for starting sparkpeople! Without all of you I could not have done this! Edited for spelling.

    Setting goals is something I am familiar with. I am working on a goal now of becoming more healthy and eating right to lower my blood sugar so eventually I can get off of my meds.
