Barn Swallow BnB
Monday, June 15, 2020
This year, my front porch has been playing host to a family of barn swallows. They actually built the tidy little nest under the eaves last year but decided not to use it. This year, however, it’s populated by five sweet little chicks. I’ve really enjoyed watching the parents' acrobatic maneuvers as they’ve swept in under the overhang to feed their small charges.
I think check-out time is drawing close now. The little ones have grown to the point where they barely fit inside the cup. This morning I noticed that the parents interrupted their seemingly endless food deliveries for some flying demonstrations, swooping back and forth in front of the nest repeatedly.
One little guy seemed to be getting the message as he hung onto the lip of the nest, vigorously flapping his wings. Just as I thought he might take off, he hopped back into the cup with his siblings and mom and dad resumed the feeding trips. Somehow, though, I don’t think my little tenants will stay much longer. I'll really miss the entertainment once they're gone.
