Favourite time of the week...
Saturday, April 25, 2020
I think Saturday morning is officially my favourite part of every week. It’s my ‘time off’ and if I do bake or cook something, it’s more for fun. It’s the day I have a slower breakfast and sit back with an iced coffee, often followed by an herbal tea. This morning I have a s’mores chai tea and my bread baking book to read. Peaceful.
This week seemed to go a little faster than other quarantine weeks. Thank goodness. Our province has had 6 days with no new cases so some restrictions are being gradually and slightly lifted. None of the initial measures change anything for our family, however. I don’t think we will be affected until the second or third phase of the process.
This week I ordered some face masks since they are going to be a requirement when we start going out in public again. I also ordered some ‘treat’ groceries including some flavoured ground coffee for my daily iced coffee and some skinny syrups to sweeten it. It’s hard to say when we will get everything. It’s obvious the lack of physical shopping has put a strain on online shopping either by making the online shops super busy and slower to fill orders, in addition to overloading all of the shipping methods. Canada post takes about 5-7 days longer these days so you don’t want to order something that you need immediately.
My sourdough starter has now been active for two weeks. I baked my first loaf with it last weekend and this week I had to give it a weekly feeding and I left it out to try my second loaf this weekend. I’m happy to say that it rose like crazy last night and it’s proofing right now to be baked later today. I was very relieved that the yeast seems to be plenty active. Anxious to see if we notice a difference in taste with the second loaf.
I don’t have as much meal prep this weekend since I want to use a lot of leftovers from the freezer for our lunches this week. Since that frees up some time, I might make sushi again this weekend since I still have some frozen shrimp, avocado and cucumber.
Back to enjoying this s’mores chai tea...sooooo delicious...
