Shoo The Devil Away!

Sunday, April 05, 2020

When we are in the middle of a crisis, it’s easy to allow fear and the lies of the devil to control our thoughts. We have a choice to make, either we can believe the lies of the enemy, or the promises of our covenant keeping God. The choice is ours…. we can fall prey to the lies of the enemy, not doing anything to stop them, or we can counter those lies with the truth of God’s word.

Matthew 6:31-33 NLT “So don’t worry about these things, saying,

‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’

32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.

33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Often our first thought is one of panic…. But notice that Jesus told His disciples not to worry about things, saying……

What we say about what we are experiencing carries the power of life and death because the tongue is what empowers our thoughts. Jesus said, “these things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers”. What is dominating your thoughts will usually come out your mouth. We say what we are believing in our hearts and thus we take those thoughts and empower them to carry out what we send them out to do. God said in Isaiah 55:11: “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (NKJV) God spoke this world into existence. It was His Word sent out to bring order out of chaos, light in the darkness, that created the earth that we live in today.
Likewise, God established covenant promises through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus that as believers, we gain access to by receiving Him as Savior and Lord. He paid the price for our sin, past, present and future. Once again, God’s principle for making salvation our own is by “believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth. Romans 10:9, 10 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” These promises are the “abundant life” that Jesus died to give us. But there is one who comes to steal, kill and destroy and Jesus identified him as the “thief” in John 10:10: “The thief does not come except to steal and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

So, how do we stop the thief from stealing our promises? How do we counter those thoughts that come bombarding our minds? Just as Jesus said to not worry by taking those thoughts of fear and doubt and speaking out the negative, He tells us to counter them by seeking first His Kingdom and that He would take care of our needs. The devil brings thoughts of fear, tragedy, turmoil, conflict and doubt. We must “shoo” him away by taking those negative thoughts captive and replacing them with the truth of God’s Word and guarding our hearts from the voices that come in our most vulnerable moments.

The devil speaks lies, lies, and more lies. When Jesus was in the wilderness, when He had countered with God's Word every lie that the devil had spoken to Him, at the end of that portion of scripture, God’s Word says that the devil left Him for an “opportune” time. You see, the devil watches for our areas or times of vulnerability and he capitalizes on those times through mind games. He speaks lies and you can identify the voice you are hearing by the tone of the content. Identifying the voice of the enemy is something that many Christians have not learned to do so they simply receive the lies instead of stopping the enemy by rejecting the lie and speaking God's truth. Truth supersedes fact. Many times, I have stopped my train of thought and said, "wait a minute! What does God's Word say?" The truth is God's word that supersedes the fact of what you are experiencing.

Whatever the devil is saying to you today, there is a promise of God to counteract or supersede that negative, fearful thought. We see the lies of the devil at work in our world today: fear that we will die from COVID-19; fear that our economy is going to crash and we’ll lose everything, our jobs, our homes, our income, our families, and even our lives. It is a tragic fact that many have died from that illness and many live in constant fear of that becoming a reality in their lives. And I am not trying to minimize their loss at all; I pray that they will be comforted during this difficult time. Fear is all around us…. but God is greater than any fearful thought that you may have. Silence the voice of the enemy by meditating on and speaking out the truth of God’s Word. 1 John 4:18 says that “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” Focusing on God’s perfect love for you will push back the torment of the fear that is trying to overcome you. Speak the truth to counter the lie.

You may be experiencing sickness, but the truth is that God put your sickness on Jesus' back, and He nailed it to the cross. And so, your healing becomes a covenant promise that the enemy will try to steal away from you. Sometimes we don't take charge of those thoughts because we have been worn down by what we are going through. There is no shame in that as each of us has limitations especially where sickness is concerned. In those times we need to rest in Him and allow Him to minister His peace to our inner most beings. Rest in the natural and rest in the spiritual. Take time to rest.

You may be experiencing a loss of income and the devil is saying to you that you are going to lose everything because of this “virus”. But the truth of God’s Word is that He is your Source, and when you seek His Kingdom above all else, He will provide for your needs. Paul told the Philippians when they sent an offering to him to provide for his needs, that he wasn’t concerned about the provision that he needed, but he was concerned that they would have fruit built up in their account in heaven with God. And that he knew that God would meet all their need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:17-19)

I recently heard someone say that she had written a “Truth Journal” that she could return to when she needed the truth of God’s Word to counteract a lie of the enemy. She had for some time been recording promises from God’s Word regarding situations that she had encountered or thought she might encounter. They were what she would draw from to counteract the lies of the enemy. She would record scriptures that applied to subjects like sickness, lack, salvation, money, family relationships, etc. She wrote the truth from God’s Word as she needed it to counteract what the devil was speaking to her mind. Then she would speak the Word to stop the voices. I thought that was a clever idea. I have done some of that in my past as well. I referred to my promises as my “spiritual vitamins” and I often took them like I would a vitamin to bolster my immune system.

Today, as we go into the week between Palm Sunday and Easter may we be ever mindful of what Jesus died to give us, what His salvation does in us and how He wants to move through us, to be truth speakers, hope dealers and faithful believers. May our thoughts line up with the truth of His word and may we be quick to silence the voice of the enemy in our minds.

If you’ve never received Jesus as your own personal Lord and Savior, there is no better time to do that than now. Simply pray and ask Jesus into your heart, believe that He is God’s Son, that He died for your sin and that when you confess your sin and your need for Him He will forgive you and save you. Then confess Him as your Lord and Savior. Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13)
