When you work for a conservative religious institution, you have to accept their dogma, even if you don't believe in it. Even if you know in your heart it is wrong, especially when it judges other people based on things they cannot change, like gender or sexual orientation. While my parents may have believed those things when they were younger because their parents told them so, I know that through their own experiences they have become more accepting and less judgmental. I believed my teachers who said we were made in the likeness of God and he doesn't make mistakes - he loves everyone. I believe we all have merit, we all have rights,we should all be respected not excluded or shunned but loved - every single one of us.
Recently I had purchased some stamps for our office. I chose them because they were bold, colorful, and made me happy to look at them. We had been using them for about 2 months when a complaint was made about them, that the bright, beautiful stamps contained a color spectrum that was said to be a rainbow (it was not) and that by using the stamps we were promoting homosexuality. Then I was told to take the stamps back to the Post Office and exchange them for others that, I presume, do not promote homosexuality.
I am seriously considering a change in employers...
