Walmart During an Epidemic

Monday, March 16, 2020

Obviously nobody is washing dishes at home because they are buying paper plates.

One of the many random couples buying water and a bunch of paper goods. I started wondering if everyone expected the faucets to break or their wells to dry up. I never buy any bottled water because the water in my kitchen is fine.

I think my biggest surprise was the shelves of pasta sauce. I guess if people think they might get quarantined then they will be eating lots of pasta while they are stuck home.

Of course because of the news, hand soap was hard to find. I got one container of hand wash and one bottle of shampoo. Actually the shelves had quite a variety of shampoo still lined up. I guess people weren't worried about having clean hair.

Eggs were running low, but I was able to grab 2 dozen, along with some yogurt, shredded cheese, cream cheese, coconut milk and almond milk. I was glad to also grab some pork rinds and guacamole.
See I don't get to walk around in a store to shop that often, so I just needed to pick up stuff that I can't order online. Besides I was in a hurry to get out of that madhouse...people were getting crazy.

Our general manager said that it will be our last big employee shopping trip until after this coronavirus epidemic is over. Oh thank God for online shopping. I will just order my coffee from Amazon.

Canyon_gal, you know I’m going to take care of my hair!
But that gallon of “shampoo concentrate” also makes a decent hand “soap”. (It’s a detergent, but I’m pedantic)

People forget that they don’t have to buy the bottle of detergent labeled for whichever use. Get something that can pull triple duty.
Heck, I can wash my hair with a soap bar, as long as I have something acidic to rinse with. If my hair was short, I might not care then.

You know what we have plenty of? Bar soap. Dial, Irish Spring, Ivory, all sorts of fancy ones. Even actual soap. (See detergent and pedantic)
We have all been told “wash your hands.”
Not “buy all the food.” Not “wipe yourself with TP head to toe.”

    Fear is strange.

It has been nuts at Trader Joe’s and Costco too. I am amazed at what people are buying. It is a shopping frenzy.

**SIGH** Yes, lots of people are hoarding. I mean, I saw one woman w/at least a dozen gallons of milk. Now, unless your buying for others or have a HUGE family, that milk will end up going bad!

Just have to use good judgment and hand wash.

Let's hope Amazon doesn't run out and they have healthy employees to pick everyone's orders and drivers to deliver them.

I don't get the water thing either....I don't Covid-19 is living in the water supply.

It's the same everywhere. No toilet paper, cleaning products, etc. And a lot of products come from countries that are hard hit. Lots of people are preparing in case essential personnel are not able to come to work due to illness or mandatory quarantine. That could include water treatment workers, doctors, nurses. Amazon is cutting back on employees. They predict that 30-40% of the population will be infected but 80% willl not be critically ill. According to the chief expert on communicable diseases the pandemic is just getting started. It may go on until September and there will be no vaccine for a year. There is no treatment. Many governors are stepping up to the plate and taking charge to protect their residents because the federal government is sleepy when it comes to natural disasters.

Our stores are all the same here! Even all the flour and sugar and yeast was gone. I guess people are going to bake their own bread too!

Your pictures look like our stores also. I'm just glad we don't have children or pets right now. We have enough supplies hopefully to last until this is all over with. Be well and have a blessed week 🙏
