Make Peace With Your Past

Wednesday, March 04, 2020

Real self love and self compassion includes being gentle and forgiving with ourselves for who we used to be before we changed. If we want to truly love ourselves, then we have to work on letting go of the shame and guilt we’ve been holding onto about who we used to be in the past, before we transformed into who we are now, in the present. There has been days where I’ve felt resentment towards myself about how I let myself go in the past, but who hasn’t? Sometimes I look back at my past and I have a hard time accepting it. I find myself asking myself why I did that to myself. Still not completely having made peace with my past yet leaves me feeling fragile about how I used to look. It’s still hard for me to take it as a compliment when someone says to me “you look so much better now”. I know they mean well, it’s just hard. Yes, I feel a little embarrassed about the way I used to look, but it’s all the more reason to appreciate how far I’ve come and how much I’ve changed. And it’s motivation to keep working towards maintaining and improving my healthy lifestyle, to make sure I never go back to where I used to be in my life again. Because, well... I never want to feel that way again. And that’s enough motivation for me. We live, we go through life, things happen, we gain weight. Sometimes it even sneaks up on us without us seeing it coming. But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with us... it just means we maybe coped with whatever we were going through the best we knew how to at the time. It doesn’t make us weak, but more so strong for realizing it and making the effort to change. Trust me when I say you are not alone. Just look around on Spark, there are many who share your struggles. People who know what you’ve been through because they’ve been there. And quite fortunately, people who are humble enough to show as much enthusiasm about others success and they would their own. You can choose to dislike the old version of you, or you can decide to make peace with it and leave it in the past, and begin to love and embrace not just the new you but the old you, knowing that without who you were you wouldn’t be who you are now. Love yourself and be proud of how far you’ve come. Don’t worry about your past too much. Acknowledge it, let it go, and let yourself be happy now. Save your energy for celebrating your progress and who you’ve become. “In order to love who you are, you cannot hate the experiences that shaped you”. -Andrea Dykstra “Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know until you learned it”. -Maya Angelou “Don’t be ashamed of your story. It will inspire others”. -Unknown
