Balsam of Peru Allergy

Monday, January 20, 2020

I was having a hard time with fragrances and started getting unscented shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap and laundry soap. It helped for a while until I was in public places and someone had scented body wash or perfume. A doctor told me to carry cough drops when I was using strong cleaning products to clean a school. This wasn't working any more.
I was getting chest pains and ringing in my ears and was sent to an allergist. Skin test showed no allergies. They did blood work for sensitivity and it came back my immune system is strong.
Since I already took care of scented products, they are skipping the positive patch test for Balsam of Peru. For 7 weeks I have to eliminate cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and citrus.
Balsam of Peru is a fragrant resinous liquid harvested from trees grown in Central America. It contains substances related to cinnamon, vanilla, clove and flavorings. Not commonly used today, it can still be found in fragrance, flavor or antibacterial ingredients.
Spices and citrus are easy to eliminate, but vanilla has many different names.
By eliminating these things my immune system will be stronger and when I am out, other peoples scented products shouldn't bother me.
