Winter Workouts

Monday, January 20, 2020

Working out in the winter is a pain. Years ago, when I had a gym membership, I made the following observations:

-The gyms are packed, seriously packed.
-Getting to the gym is painful. My goal at the time was a 30 minute workout. I could spend half of that clearing the car before and after.
-It is too cold to shower and jump outside, and waaay too cold to commute in workout clothes.

I started on SparkPeople in October, knowing that the winter stretch was going to be a hard one. When I hopped on here, I said "no problem, I will cycle to work at least one day a week". Now my bicycle is frozen solid into a snowbank. I don't want to sign up for a gym membership, at least not until March, so my options are limited.

I do own a treadmill, but have two obstacles to using it. It is in the basement, covered in laundry, and it reminds me way too much of way too many nights walking a baby down to sleep.

Shoveling snow seems to work well, but it thankfully doesn't snow every day.

So I have settled on some things that are easy to do. I am walking 20-30 minutes at lunch indoors if I can. I have increased my cleaning at home, which is having the added effect of making the place look better. Maybe it will even eventually tackle the first problem with that treadmill. I am also quite aware that the winter, the hard part, is nearly half over - so I just need to keep at it.

Opportunities for small action are everywhere.
