Among other things, today is known as veterans day. While this holiday used to have a different origin, today it is common to say "Thank You" to all who have served in the military. I've even seen strangers say "Thank You." Being thankful, having gratitude is always nice--makes the world a better place.
My irony is today's one of my favorite (former) boss' birthday, and veterans day, and the former boss is a veteran, who very literally would be the last person to ever want to get thanked for service (or wished "Happy Birthday" despite the fact I always focus on "I'm glad you are in my life" aspect of birthdays for adults--rather than the "happy another year older" aspect children so frequently enjoy).
The history of today, about 100 years ago was this:
Though she died, about 30 years ago now, I remember well my grand-mum recalling her personal memories of Armistice day. Amazingly how much the world has changed since her birth in the late 1890s.
