The maintenance struggle is real, but spark friends are always there!

Hello Spark friends!
It has been a while since I blogged about my maintenance journey! For all of those on your way to be in maintenance, to all of those in maintenance to all of those who were and are no longer as things went a bit awry, we all know the struggle is real.

Once you reach your "perfect" weight, the goal is to stay there. I know there are many people here who have been able to achieve that number on the scale and stay there, but I know many sparkers who go up and down and some who go up and can't find the way back down.

I have gained at least 10 lbs since my lowest weight. I have tried to get rid of it, but it seems quite happy to stay right where it is. So as I contemplated this struggle the other morning as I was walking before work, I was thinking, why do I want those 10 lbs gone?
Will I feel better? Will I look better? Is it more a mind thing? Will my jeans fit better?
I think the answer to all of those questions are "yes!"
But then I asked myself another question. "what if you can't lose those 10 lbs?" then what?
Can you still be happy? Are you still very active? Can you still do everything that you want to do? Are you still physically fit?
And the answer to all of those questions are also yes.

The other thing that I think of as I walk, is how amazing Spark friends are, how we much we lean on each other for support. How we know that there are people here who check on us each day, who let us know that they are here to support and encourage and they really care.
I am so happy to part of this awesome community. To be able to encourage and support others who are trying their best to be healthy and to make good choices.
This journey will never be easy for me. I love food, and my husband is an excellent cook, and I have really enjoyed trying new recipes from this site and finding ways to eat healthy foods in new ways. I will always love sweets in moderation, and I do love a glass of wine with my dinner. But I will keep on doing my best to stay where I am now. To stay healthy, to be active, to walk as much as I can each day, and to get back on the elliptical and maybe even get those spark dvd's out again. The struggle is real folks, so don't compare yourself to others because it looks like another person can lose the weight easily and keep it off. Very few people can.
Keep on logging into Spark and make friends with others. We are all here for the same reason. To be healthy and to lose weight!
We can do this friends, one day at a time!
Spark on!

I'm not at the maintenance stage yet, but I've been making an effort to lose five pounds for over a year, and now it's two pounds that keep going up or down. You're an inspiration to me and so many other SparkPeople. Thanks for always posting positive messages despite whatever you're going through in your daily life.
Love and hugs to you -- xoxo

Great blog! I am not at my goal weight yet, but it is a challenge that I am looking forward to. And it is a challenge simply to keep on with the journey.

I frequently ask myself the very same questions that you pose here. I am very close to achieving the goal I set for myself years ago. I think I am a bit afraid because then the question of "what now" will have to be answered. thanks for your honesty and encouragement.

I am 8 pounds from goal and the struggle IS real. I have no illusions that at maintenance it will somehow be easier. On the contrary, the efforts only become more necessary to keep the pounds off.

However, the health benefits I’ve obtained will surely out way the work it will need to stay at a healthy weight. I sure hope so, anyway.

Good morning Holly- I think you're fabulous all around and I think that those 10 pounds are due to muscle as I have seen you hustle while walking and all of your running medals. For myself , I have stopped paying attention to the scale number and pay more attention to others numbers BP/ Blood sugar etc. I fluctuate all the time anywhere between 7-9 pounds. What ever you decide to do I'll be here for support ! emoticon emoticon

I hope to be in maintenance soon, but these last 10 FEELS like maintenance!

    Good morning,
Thank you for your supportive friendship. You encourage me everyday. Your kindness is very loving. Your a wonderful Spark sister.

Yes I have said all of those words to myself. I also love food and sweets. I am from a family of 7 children. So every meal our parents told us to clean our plates. As an adult I leave food on my plate here at home and when we eat out. I have Gerd so I take 1 pill daily to help my stomach. I can't eat a lot of foods I love. Fruits and spicy foods. I've learned over these years here that eating healthy foods improves how I feel all day.

My 10th year was yesterday. I've been blessed by so many awesome friends.

    Hugs and Love,

Great blog. My goal is to stay healthy as part of this journey.i have ups and downs with the weight,, but as we get older the weight doesn’t seem to come off as easily as it once did. We just need to do our best and right now that is what I am trying to do. Spark people really does offer wonderful support from those who participate and I am happy and proud to be part of this great group.

Way to evaluate the current numbers. As I get older, I realize life is short and being healthy is my main goal. Sometimes numbers tell us that we are healthy, but not always. Keep doing what will make you healthy AND happy. Hugs!

A wonderful post! I have been to my goal weight before and then to almost my goal weight, only to gain it all back plus more. The struggle is real until we can find a true balance in our lives and learn to love food but eat it in the right ways for the right reasons.

I love the pic. haha thanks for the laugh. So true, though.

Love the cartoon. I have thick hair and every time I used to cut it short,
I really did feel lighter. emoticon
Great blog. I have gained 5 kg and am thinking the same as you are.
I need to lose at least 2 so that I don't have problems with my knees.
You have done so well to maintain all these years. Feel happy at whatever
makes you feel good. We have to always be mindful. emoticon

Love your blog! And love the way you answered your questions. It really is all about health.

It's tough to have those 10 (or even 5) extra pounds hanging on but being fit and healthy are THE most important things. Keep doing what you're doing, enjoy your DH's food and your life.

I joined Spark to help me keep the weight off and it and all my supportive friends, like you! have made all the difference. Keeping the weight off isn't easy and Spark gives me the extra boost every day to make it happen.

Thank you for being a friend!

Lowest achievable weight versus lowest sustainable weight . . . they don't match up for most of us!!

But to be fit and healthy and happy in our skins: yeah. Gentle nutrition, gentle exercise, body kindness.

    Great blog!! Thank you!!

I love the cartoon, but wouldn't go that far with cutting my hair. When I started my Spark journey my thought has always been what happens after the loss you wanted ? Since I struggle to lose believe I will be struggling the rest of my life---even if I ever lose the pounds I want. However Holly you have done a marvelous job, and keep on with exercise and watching what you eat. I do believe that the body does settle to a weight that it feels comfortable with. I will not give up, and know you will continue moving forward doing your best to reach ridding that 10 pounds, all the best .

Thank you for those encouraging words!!! Yes, this is a real battle no matter where we are in this journey but as we lift each other up and glean strength we have the VICTORY!!!!

Great blog Holly. Yes maintenance is a weighty question for me too. I am 10 pounds away from where I think I should be, BUT I am not finding the willpower right now that will get me there. I am not struggling to stay at this weight but I haven't really tried to get that last 10 pounds off. This winter will decide for me. If I don't get it off I may decide this is my "perfect" weight. I don't want to have a huge daily struggle with food for the rest of my life.

Thanks for the blog! I hope this weekend is awesome for you and filled with many blessings dear friend!

Great message and one I really needed to hear today. At first I lost enough weight that I needed to buy new clothes. Yesterday I put on a jacket from before and it was still huge on me. But I am not where I want to be and I can't seem to find the right balance to get me there. I'm still walking every day with Daisy but the walks are shorter because it's colder out there. My gym attendance has been reduced because I am having so much trouble with my knees - even the one that's not my own. Like you I have asked myself similar questions and come up with similar answers. I will not give up but I will also not dwell on things. I will do my best every day!

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I guess for me, maintaining definitely takes work but . . . I look at it as just another part of the journey. I love feeling healthy. And enjoy life. Will do what it takes to keep those 2 things going!

Love your philosophy about maintenance. Thanks for sharing.

Frankly, maintenance is much more difficult than losing. I struggle more now that I at or near my goal weight that I did when I was 50 pounds ago. Nevertheless, it's worth it in so many ways. I just keep on Sparking one-day-at-a-time.

P.S. Love the cartoon!! (Mine is already short, so I don't dare chop more off-LOL)
