An Eating Tour Of Belgrade
Monday, October 21, 2019
We are on a river cruise up the Danube and today we were in Belgrade, Serbia. We elected to go on an eating tour of Belgrade and it was terrific. Even though I do "meatless Mondays" I decided to sample the food and glad I did!
We started off with breakfast in an outdoor cafe near the old fort with Turkish coffee, homemade bread and cheeses and a fried savory donut. then we had a fantastic walk through the fort that started out as the original Belgrade walled city. the wealthy lived behind the high walls while the peasants were further out with lower walls. Lots of history and lots of walking.
Walking through lovely neighborhoods and stopped for what we thought was lunch with platter of cheeses, meats, delicious bread, breaded red peppers, salad. As we left we were told that Serbians want to give you LOTS of food and it's OK to have some left over. We were shocked to be told that was just the appetizer!
Lunch was at a different restaurant in the Bohemian sections....none of us ate that much and all swore we wouldn't have dinner....doubt that will happen.
Good thing I started the day with a walk on the upper deck and we got plenty of walking during the day. This has been such a great trip! Brings me out of my comfort zone and really shakes things up.
Now to enjoy dinner and not go overboard. Think I'll skip the cocktail hour.
