2--God Speaks to Us

Tuesday, August 20, 2019

God is vitally concerned with our health. I was out shopping awhile back and ended up at Wal-Mart about supper time, so I got a bag of potato chips to eat on the half-hour drive home. As I started to open the bag, I heard a silent voice say, "What'll it be, this or that?" "This" referred to the way of salvation, and "that" was the potato chips.

With all the info out there about the risks of fried food, especially deep fat fried food, why would God bother to mention it so directly? Because He loves us so deeply, and because He understands our short memories and our disconnect between far-off research and our own personal experience. And because He has placed health laws in action that we ignore at our own peril.

God has made Himself responsible for giving us a blessing (good health, for instance) if we are obedient to His laws, and, like any good parent, He keeps nudging us in the right direction. Now, His nudging may not always be so direct. More often than not, it may be a little tug at the heart to say, "Don't go there!"

Some say, "Yeah, well, I KNOW better than I DO. I can't do without my candy [or, fill in the blank]." That's where the will comes in. Most people don't understand the true force of the will. The will is the command center of the mind. You can train yourself to enjoy better food. When you say, "I will obey the laws of health," God pledges Himself to strengthen you in that resolve. I haven't had a potato chip from that day to this. And I fancy myself to be healthier because of it. Win-win!!

Does God speak to us? Yes, indeed! And I rather suspect that God has a little smile on His face right now. Perhaps He even thrust His fists in the air and said, "Yes!!" Because He takes no pleasure in exacting a penalty on us. He'd far rather save us from ourselves.

Well, it is a good thing you listened to not eat the potato chips. What about the [or fill in the blank]?

Keep on truckin' dude, you are right in saying God takes no pleasure in exacting a penalty on us. He put the penalty on Jesus. Done deal.

I keep trying to remember that:
