Tricking Myself into Being Motivated

Monday, August 19, 2019

I've found a great way to get myself to do things I don't like to do, like exercising, weeding, cleaning, reorganizing.

Netflix and youtube are my friends when cleaning, reorganizing and running on the treadmill. When cleaning, etc.. I like to watch something that doesn't take much concentration--usually something that I'm not totally into but am somewhat interested in. I love documentaries, particularly about history. This week, I am watching "The Family." When running, I like old mysteries from PBS, or columbo, Murder she wrote. So fun to see how things have changed from when those tv shows were made.

I also motivate myself to exercise by doing it outdoors. Something about exercising in nature really motivates me and makes my emotions soar afterwards. When I'm down, I find that a hike, a bike ride or a run on woodsy trails are what fixes me.

Yay for motivators! Music is mine - especially when I'm one big bag of whininess. And hurrah for being outdoors!

I love those shows you mentioned. I get myself through cooking and laundry listening to podcasts and audiobooks. Going outdoors to walk is a treat during my breaks at work. Our building is surrounded by woods. Glad this works for you.

Keep it up! Like Kerry I could never houseclean and watch TV at the same time and for safety reasons I do not wear ear buds while outdoors walking. Indoor walking on bad weather days calls for the stereo to be cranked up!

I love to walk outside, too. Since I don't watch TV (unplugged that puppy 20 years ago) the few things I do watch on DVD, I want to be able to pay attention to, so I would never play an episode while trying to do something else - I am very visual and things tend to go in one ear and out the other if I can't watch. Won't get any housework done that way!
    Glad something works for you.
