A Day of Discoveries

Wednesday, June 19, 2019

I know that the first day of summer isn’t until Friday, but my garden plants are so hot that several of the tomato plants have died, and the rest are so stressed that they’re letting their tomatoes turn red even at fairly small sizes.... these are NOT cherry tomato plants but the tomatoes are ridiculously small, averaging about 2.5 inches across...

This morning I picked a big bowl of these

When I headed back into the house, I discovered a wet back porch, for no apparent reason, and since my back porch is a little bit like an outdoors attic (it catches all the outdoor stuff that I don’t have another place for) I had to move a ton of stuff to try to figure out where the moisture is coming from.... which meant finding things I hadn’t seen in ages (So THAT’S where my Hav-a-heart trap is!), AND actually throwing away yard stuff/junk that I no longer intend/or have the interest to repair or salvage.... I mean, there’s optimism, and then there’s sheer insanity...

I will have to check my hypothesis for where the moisture is coming from in the cool of the morning tomorrow... so I came back inside and tried out a cool little gizmo I picked up at Walmart, the DRAIN WEASEL! Who can resist something named The Drain Weasel?!?! It looks and feels like a very long pipe cleaner made out of the scratchy part of Velcro, and it purports to be useful for removing hair clogs from drains...

This screen shot from Amazon shows it being called a Drain Millipede, but mine from Walmart was actually named The Drain Weasel by FlexSnake.

Holy Moley! It WORKS like nobody’s business! You stick the straightened out “pipe cleaner” down the drain which will follow the bends of the pipes, then you turn the little crank which rotates and flexes the little hook-y thingies which grab the hair... And the glob of of hair it pulled up from my bathroom sink grossed me out totally (at least 5 years of hair!) and the glob it pulled up from the shower drain was even worse!... my drains must be feeling ever so much better now...

I think I earned my rest tonight!

As well you did. I hope you don't have a big problem on the porch. I wasn't aware tomatoes don't like the high heat. Probably why I can't grow them in the RGV even though we are told we can and we still buy the plants! I hope it cools back into a normal for your area. I know it's hot and have put out heat advisories south of you.
