Motivational quote of the week

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Hi Everyone

I have another nature-related motivational quote this week that comes from one of my favorite motivational actors:

Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!
-- Robin Williams

We had a rainy winter here in Northern California, so this has led to a bounty of spring flowers blooming all around us. Nature is ready to party this spring. I hope the same is happening where you are located if it is spring for you.

My highlight this week was going on a short trip to the Big Sur area while the kids were out for spring break. We found a place pet-friendly place so took Flash along for the adventure. It was fun to hike with the family plus Flash.

I wanted to make a comment about looking for daily highlights. One SparkMember mentioned that it was hard to think about daily highlights because so much was hard about her life now.

I understand this feeling, but would say this is actually the right time to still look for small daily highlights and intentionally try to make those highlights if necessary.

One of the reasons connects to stress. I will write more about this soon, but when you are stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol can be good in small doses because it makes you act decisively in a fight-or-flight situation. But, too much cortisol can cause all kinds of problems for your body.

So, during tough times, if you MAKE highlights that help dissipate this hormone like physical activity and do other things to reduce your stress levels, this can make a big impact on how you end up after tough situations.

It's tough to hear about people going through tough situations like I know so many of you are at various times. I often try to keep things "sparky" in my writing, but know that these techniques can work in all "seasons" of your life since we all have to go through tough times.

Let me know if you have any highlights from this week below.

Thanks for your support!

SparkPeople is a tiny company with a team passionate about helping as many people as we can reach their goals. When you read any of our emails or visit our app or website, this really does make a big impact on our ability to help more people, so I greatly appreciate your help and support! Since recovering from my brain surgery (www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6533532), I am more committed than ever to do my best to help you and others reach many types of goals!

SparkCheers!

I have only once driven through Big Sur but it looked like a wonderful place to visit! And how nice that Flash could join you. We always travel with Daisy now, she's such a big part of our family.

You are such an inspiration to all of us and I personally really appreciate each and every one of your blogs. Yes, life can certainly be difficult and my husband is having a very hard time right now (which totally affects my own life), but each morning I try to think of at least three things that were good in the day before - there is always something to be grateful for.

Our spring is slowly coming around. We had a beautiful day yesterday. I haven't even had to turn the heat on this morning which is truly a blessing! Looks like we'll get some rain today but that's okay - it's not snow!

We all have problems at times, could be health, finances, loss of spouse or other family members.
It is not easy to go on and keep motivated. However, I think we need to do this no matter what happens, since we are much better off if we are positive and HEALING comes sooner if we stay upbeat and focus on our lives for the Best Version of ourselves, no matter what issues we have to face.
Look for GOOD thing and Keep motivate by helping others and this will help a person too.
Glad you are enjoying a Spring trip and Flash could go along too.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy the weekend and Sunday, if you celebrate. Rained here two days in a row, so looking for warmer days this coming week......(-: Warm weather and sunshine makes most of us feel upbeat and yes, maybe even ready to party.....

    A few highlights! emoticon

    1) I have recommitted to coming back to Sparkpeople more frequently and consistently - I had been increasing my water intake drastically (recommitting to my exercise and overall better eating) I knew this was the best place to track my water (fitness and much more).

    2) It was just recently I realised that I have been a member on Sparkpeople since 2007!!

    3) After a double arm injury last year - I put on weight, exercise was restricted. I lost a lot of focus/hope/motivation - I finally managed to break the cycle and started to lose again. My arms are still healing, but the rest of me is moving! (I hadn't noticed my improvements!)

    4) I made peace with the apartment where we had to move to (much smaller than previous) and changed my entire outlook on everything once I 'made peace' and started to love, appreciate what we have.

    5) I got out and walked for the first time last week..in ages. (My arms really affected so much in my mobility!) though I didn't go far or for very long (20 mins - slow paced!) It...was.. definitely a highlight to get outdoors again emoticon

I believe that highlights should be acknowledged daily (sort of akin to the daily gratitude concept - coupled there with!) it helps us to feel better about our lives, ourselves, situations. Could be many reasons! But in seeing that there are highlights (Even if it's 'I got up on time for the first time.. in ages!' lol - to - 'we got married' or 'I lost 2 lbs'!! ) it all matters... Excellent post - helps us all to walk together, learn from each other and a good reminder - acknowledge and learn to recognise - the highlights of your day!

I need to do that more! So many things cause me stress, my dad in the nursing home, my Nephew in law in Hospice from cancer, insurance companies and so on. It's maddening at times. I will be more watchful about the good things in life, at least I will try.

    Have a Blessed Easter!

You are so right. There's always something good in each and every day...in each and every moment. We only have to look to find it. It's not about being an optimist or looking at the world through rose-colored glasses; it's all right there if we turn our attention to the peace, the kindness, the good, the beautiful, and the joyful. Life is amazing. And then it sucks. And then it's amazing again. It's a beautiful ride.

And I just want to tell you how much I appreciate you, your team, your tiny company, and your unbridled passion to help people. You have helped me in so many ways, not just my weight loss and fitness goals. The Four Cornerstones have become a part of every aspect of my life and ALL my goals. And although I'm not part of your tiny company, I am just as passionate about helping people as you... and it's you and your team that brought that about. The CrissCross Effect at work! Or should I say the ChrisCross effect!

I have a trick that I use when times are difficult. I look for one special thing every day. It can be a beautiful flower, or long view toward the sea, or a positive interaction with a stranger, or almost anything. The key is to focus on finding something and recognizing that it makes you smile. It really helps when it seems that everything is just too hard.

I am a severely anxious person, with numerous health issues, but one way I work around that is to look for silver linings in whatever situation is unfolding. It usually works to keep me from falling apart from anticipation if I insert a little levity or absurdity into my thoughts about a serious situation.

Hi Chris, I am excited to read your blog each week. You are an inspiration. My username is Cathy49. I was 49 when I joined Spark People. I am 61 now. I have relied in Spark People for exercise, health, and nutrition. We have had a couple of nice days weather wise. I took this opportunity to clean up our landscaping. I spent 4 hours yesterday and four hours today. I finished and it looks great! There is nothing that makes you feel invigorated like fresh air and physical labor. I also managed to walk my dog 4 times and I also managed to get in 65 minutes on the elliptical. It was a great day! Enjoy your day!

So very true. My highlight of the week was adopting a kitty and officially becoming one of those crazy cat ladies. The other true highlight was making the tough decision to spend the money having some plumbing work done. As it turns out the root blockage inside the pipes could have never been fixed any other way. It was a footlong root ball of dirt and tree roots that was the diameter of the pipe. It couldn't be seen because that section didn't have an access point. Many years of a flooded laundry floor are behind me now and that saga has finally come to an end.

I love the quote and I loved Robin Williams. He could ALWAYS make me laugh out loud.

My Highlight of the week was when I brought some clothes up from our storage room to go through and donate to Good Will. I usually buy clothes that are of a style that will last. I had hung on to several that were 2 sizes too small because I liked them so much AND I always hoped that I WOULD fit into them again. I tried them on.................and they were actually a bit loose!!!!! I love a NSV.

Happy Easter to you and yours.

Spring really does make me want to party. It's so easy to be on a high when Spring arrives. Who needs drugs when we have nature. My highlight this weekend is Easter. I am a Christian so this is a very important week for me. Thank you Chris for all that you do for us. SparkPeople is such an important part of my life. With all the health problems I was having before joining, who knows what could have happened to me had I not found Spark. Losing weight made such a difference but that's not the only benefit I found here. Setting goals and reaching them has made such a difference in the way I feel about myself. I am truly grateful for SP.

You are correct....no matter how bad things get you can try to find something good.
Highlights for me...…..all my rose bushes are blooming and they are sprawling all
over the place....my DIL is speaking to me again.....their dog is doing better(he had
a seizure a couple weeks ago)

There is always something...you may laugh Chris, but I found a pink shirt and had
been looking for 3 years for this shade of pink....and it was on sale BOGO..Buy one,
get one(free) so today they wanted me to to a review, and the same shirt was marked
down so I got 2 more in different colors...and I had a coupon so I got both shirts for
    10.84.....
Small things, but it made my day....I am losing slowly but every pound down I put a
Dollar in a jar then when I find some little something, I have the $ to buy it...

Have a great week and I'm glad Flash got to go with y'all on the hike...bet that made
    his energetic little day...……………... emoticon
