I wanted to write a blog today that would inspire everyone - all my Sparkfriends that are doing good, ones that are struggling, newbies, and Sparkfriends at goal and maintaining. But the only thing that keeps popping into my head is Just Do It!
After years and years (and I mean 60 plus years of being overweight) I have finally found my secret to staying on track. But once you find that secret - and I am pretty sure that everybody has to find that one thing that keeps them going - after that it is just a matter of keeping up your momentum.
SparkPeople does this in a unique way by offering a basic plan or by giving you a choice of paying for more advanced help, or by joining one of the many groups to find like-minded people, or by just implementing many of the free resources. This is an awesome website and it is amazing that through all the changes over the years, SparkPeople has remained a good resource for many people.
I have found another group that is my support and has a lot of tools for creating your own eating plan, sticking with it, and group support that is so valuable to keep the motivation high. And I know this group wouldn't appeal or work for everyone because it has no secret weapon that helps you lose weight. The only real weapon in the tool chest is: Just Do It!
So my only real inspiration for everyone is this -- never give up. I know it can feel pretty overwhelming when you start a plan and think -- this time is going to be different, this time I am going to stick with it. You start out all motivated and excited for the first few weeks. Then the excuses and the monotony hits and you realize - this is going to take a long time. This is hard. I don't know if I can do this forever. And this is the point where you really have to push yourself to keep going and Just Do It. No matter what pops into your head you have to keep reminding yourself that you are learning new habits, you are creating a new body, your are reinventing a new lifestyle, and you are reprogramming your brain to accept and implement new healthy habits. And all while you are doing this you have to say to yourself - Just Do It.
And then something clicks in your brain. You have a few light bulb moments and you realize that this dieting and exercising way of life feels really good. And it isn't that hard after all. The new habits are starting to click into place and you get excited to get up each morning and be able to stay on the new healthy lifestyle and you say to yourself -- wow, today no matter what challenges come my way, I know that I will be able to Just Do It!
And the days turn into weeks, the weeks turn into months. The small baby steps grow into big challenges. The challenges become part of your lifestyle that you look forward to because this is how you do life now. This is who you are. You know that if you Just Do It over and over again, you can achieve all those goals that you have set for yourself.
Maybe Just Do It isn't the right set of words for you. Maybe you need something that more personal, like -- I've got this or Just Watch Me or Nothing's going to stop me. Whatever keeps you going through all the ups and downs - that is what is important. Find your why and then Find your little secret that keeps you going. You won't be sorry. And remember to enjoy the journey because all of it - the ups and downs - the starts the stops - the challenges - the joys the sorrows, the wins and the losses - this is our life. This is how we learn and this is what makes it interesting and gives our life meaning.
