"Go your own way..."

Friday, April 12, 2019

After five weeks of progress (losing 2-3 pounds per week) working with my trainer I hit a plateau. Not sure why my body decided to suddenly get stubborn. We were changing up my workouts (heavy on strength training, light on cardio) each week, and I continued to track my meals and snacks, staying in my calorie range. After no scale progress for three weeks I talked with my trainer and explained my frustrations. We took some body measurements and determined that I'd lost over 6 inches while gaining virtually the same amount of muscle as I had lost in body fat. I suppose if I was close to my goal weight this would be great. However, I've still got almost 50 pounds to lose. I followed his routines for two more weeks (with no weight loss and incremental muscle gains) and finally decided to ignore the strength training for a week and do three 45 minute cardio sessions.

Dropped two pounds.

I explained to my trainer what I had done, feeling a bit embarrassed at ignoring the advice I had paid for. No change in his approach, even after I explained that while building muscle is great, it's not my primary goal. I have two sessions with him left, which I suppose I will use to gain what knowledge I can from him to use in my future workouts. I'll try to put together my own workouts with a better balance of cardio and strength training. He's a good guy and I've learned a lot, but I don't think we're a good long term match for what I need to do.

I appreciate your comments, BCHARIE and ICANDOIT2018. It just feels like that since cardio isn't important to my trainer, he tends to minimize it in favor of LOTS of weight lifting. I think there's a better balance of the two for me and my situation. It's a long road ahead, and patience is tough to come by sometimes. emoticon We shall persevere.

Wishing you both the best on your journeys as well.

I am the Queen of Plateau, like I will go months with no change but my discipline isn't the greatest either, I digress. Muscle will burn fat faster, so keep up the good work. If you had a picture of before and after you would probably see that you look way slimmer with the muscle. Don't get frustrated, our bodies sometime just need to pause at the weight we are at....I think of it as an adjustment period.

emoticon Keep up the good work!
