Snow Goose Fest
Saturday, January 26, 2019
This weekend, I have been enjoying a wonderful and rare opportunity to observe wild birds during the annual Snow Goose Festival, which highlights migrating waterfowl in northern California. Weather was perfect for a field trip to a wildlife refuge where thousands of wild geese, ducks, egrets, and other wildlife shelter.
In water-thirsty California, over 90% of wetlands have disappeared. The wildlife refuges that have been saved are small, precious oases for millions of migrating birds, and home for wildlife that once was abundant throughout the region.
I got to make a new friend, too! Quixote is a young Peregrine Falcon who was brought to the event by the Center for Reconnecting with Nature, an organization whose work includes rehabilitating rescued raptors. Isn't Quixote a handsome fellow! I think I'm in love!
