The First Times...

Monday, December 17, 2018

When is the last time you tried something for the first time?

It's my new favorite question.

I wrote it down and keep it next to me on my night stand, so when I wake up in the morning it's the first thing I see.

I try to find new ways to answer that every day.

And every day, life is changing because of it.

I look at life and see how I've been living this question in different ways prior to my little note, without purposely trying. I've given myself the luxury of more quietness in my down time. This has caused me to become more productive and to look for new things to bring into my life. My new question found the perfect time to show up.

I'm slowly learning Italian. I have a dream of walking through the streets of Tuscany. Going on an 8 day walking tour that goes through Tuscany, walking from hotel to hotel, through the hills, by the water, in and out of the meadows. You try new wines and learn how to make fresh pasta. I figure I should know the language if I'm going to do all of that.

RUNSWITHDEER and I took a short walk the other night, looking at the pretty Christmas lights in the neighborhood. Since then I've taken a 10 minute walk every day. It feels different to me. It feels necessary. Walking is not new to me. Walking without the pressure of expectation is. The running slump continues. My walking streak continues, too. This is new for me.

I've taken some pressure off of myself for the first time in a long time. And I just let that shizzle go...

In this quiet downtime, I did something for the first time in a very long time. I wrote a letter. An actual letter! Pen to paper. A cousin and I have become closer since the death of my sister. I felt the need to open up and write to her in a way I've never written before. Total vulnerability. It felt strange, and uncomfortable. And I realized for the first time, how unfair it was for me to feel that way about my own feelings and sharing them. I learned a lot about myself through that letter.

For the first time, I feel like I'm living more authentically. And I'm not scared of it.

Fear is not the first feeling I have now, when I think of changing my life.

I am leaving for a two week vacation in two days. First stop Nashville. My love in my favorite city! We are embarking on an exciting new adventure for us. There will be lots of firsts on this trip.

Next stop North Carolina where I get to spend my grandson's first Christmas with him. I wouldn't miss this first for the world! My little bubba is the charm in my soul. I can't wait to see him crawling for the first time. He's even close to walking now. Maybe...just maybe I'll get lucky and he'll walk for the first time while I'm there. How cool would that be...

Third stop will be back to Nashville for my first New Year's Eve in that beautiful city, with my love. Dancing and ringing in the new year. This is a first for us, too. How sentimental it will be to say goodbye to this year, and welcome 2019 which is already promising to be a huge year. With the man I love :)

I will be taking two weeks off from work. Total first for me.

I will be taking on the January Whole30. This will be a first for me in this "new norm" of a life I now have.

When is the last time you tried something for the first time?

I am surprised at all the firsts that we experience. Wow, I love most of them. Life brings many opportunities and if you are open, there can be many, many , firsts. I feel that this new year will bring many extraordinary firsts. Like the first time I saw your eyes. The dark blue eyes that lit up my life. I am very grateful, but not just for the first time. I look forward to all the firsts for us! emoticon

“When is the last time you tried something for the first time.” I really like that question you posed. I also think your Italy plan is simply fabulous! I lived in Italy for three months teaching English. I did this in Florence and Milan and met friends who had a house in Tuscany that we went olive picking on their property and they had it made into olive oil. I also have a dead ear for language and can’t speak it but Italy was an amazing experience and I think everyone should see it and experience the magnificent cathedrals, the art from the greats and the beauty that surrounds. A walking trip is such a wonderful idea.

I love to hear you are learning Italian and have a plan to use it! How exciting.
And yay on the daily walks! Walking is so great for the body and mind. You know this, of course. Keep it going, girlfriend!
Thank you for asking this question about firsts. You got me thinking about it. Sadly, I can't think of anything right away that I have tried for the first time....lately. That needs to CHANGE! Thank you!!!

Love Love Love this! All these firsts... what a great way to live your life. Got me to thinking what firsts I might have planned. My hubby and I try to travel to new places every year, but thinking of new firsts in daily life is something to consider for sure. First up.. I'm planning to purchase and cook a pork belly!

Thanks for sharing... and sending you and your handsome hubby best wishes for a very Merry Christmas.
