My niece’s extended family

Thursday, November 22, 2018

She married into an Asian family so everyone will be at the eldest aunts home overlooking the Bay. We have been invited...then will spend the night with my niece, her husband, and the two little girls. The four year old speaks fluent Mandarin, French, and English!

emoticon For a 4 year old, it is all just "talking."
I remember a girl on the "Today Show" who had went to one of the first "Chinese immersion Schools" in Virginia, where the public school had class 2 hrs a day only in Mandarin(this was a magnet school) and then the rest of the day was in English for K5, then they went to 1st grade, the same, and 2nd grade was 4 hours Mandarin and 2 English, and 3rd grade was full Mandarin. This girl said "Oh, I thought it was so stupid, and I just hated it, but then one day in 3rd grade it just all made sense to me like English does and I've been speaking it ever since." Then they went on 5th through 8th grade.
I knew a Japanese woman who'd learned English as a teenager and married a Navy guy. She said "I realized I really knew English when I woke up one morning and I had been speaking English in my dream."
